Primary Cryotherapy for High-Grade Clinically Localized Prostate Cancer: Oncologic and Functional Outcomes from the COLD Registry.

OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the oncological and functional outcomes of primary cryotherapy in men with clinically localized, high-grade prostate … ed to occur in men with larger prostates, likely as a technical consideration for downsizing before cryosurgery. At multivariate analysis, the presence of Gleason score 9 or 10 (Hazard Ratio [HR] 1.9) and a posttreatment PSA nadir of ≥0.4 ng/mL (HR 5.7) were the only significant variables associated with biochemical progression using Cox regression. Complete …

Analysis of the surgical treatments of 63 keloids on the cartilaginous part of the auricle: effectiveness of the core excision method.

BACKGROUND: Treatments for keloids on the cartilaginous part of the auricle (i.e., the upper part of the ear excluding the earlobe) include surgical excision, cryosurgery, postoperative radiation therapy, steroid injection, taping stabilization, and pressure therapy. However, to date, there is no universally accepted treatment strategy for auricle keloids. METHODS: In this retrospective cohort study, the 63 primary auricle keloids in all 57 patients who underwent surgery from 2006 to 2012 were included. Mild scars such as hypertrophic scars were excluded. All 63 scars were treated with surger…

Selective cryolysis: a novel method of non-invasive fat removal.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: Excess fat poses a host of local and systemic problems. Various energy sources, for example, laser, ultrasound, and radiofrequency electric current have been studied as potential non-invasive treatments aimed at local destruction of subcutaneous fat. Cryosurgery at very low temperatures is routinely used for non-specific tissue destruction, however the potential for tissue-specific cold injury has not been investigated. This study describes non-invasive cold-induced selective destruction of subcutaneous fat. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Black Yucatan pigs under general an…

Rhegmatogenous Retinal Detachment in Childhood.

AIMS: To retrospectively evaluate the anatomical and functional success of surgical treatment for rhegmatogenous retinal detachment (RRD) in pediatric patients aged 18 years and younger. MATERIAL AND METHODS: The study includes 14 eyes of 14 patients, 9 (64%) of whom were males, with an average age of 12 years. All patients underwent surgery for rhegmatogenous retinal detachment (RRD) performed by a single surgeon at the Department of Ophthalmology, University Hospital Brno, and Masaryk University, from July 1, 2019, to June 30, 2024. The surgical techniques used included cryosurgery and 25G+…

Chromoblastomycosis in Latin America and the Caribbean: Epidemiology over the past 50 years.

UNLABELLED: Chromoblastomycosis is a chronic disease caused by melanized fungi that mainly affect individuals performing soil-related labor. … were treated with itraconazole as monotherapy or in combination with other antifungals, surgery or cryosurgery. Chromoblastomycosis affects hundreds of rural workers in Latin America and the Caribbean, causing disability and personal, family and economic losses. It is important to prioritize epidemiological surveillance and early diagnosis of this disease in …

Efficacy and Safety Evaluation of High-density Intense Pulsed Light in the Treatment of Grades II and IV Acne Vulgaris as Monotherapy in Dark-skinned Women of Child Bearing Age.

Background: Acne vulgaris is a self-limiting, chronic inflammatory disorder of the pilosebaceous unit characterized by exacerbations and rem … retinoids are required to control the symptoms. Chemical peeling with glycolic and salicylic acids, cryosurgery with liquid nitrogen or carbon dioxide, and narrowband ultraviolet light are a few of the supportive procedural treatments available for Grades 3 and 4 acne. Objective: The author sought to determine the efficacy and safety of intense pulsed light ( …

Refractory Trigeminal Neuralgia Treatment with Cryoneurolysis in a Patient with Idiopathic Thrombocytopenic Purpura: A Case Report.

BACKGROUND: Trigeminal neuralgia is a debilitating facial pain condition. Managing trigeminal neuralgia in patients with co-existing conditions like idiopathic thrombocytopenic purpura, which increases bleeding risk, presents a significant clinical challenge, especially when considering interventional procedures. CASE REPORT: We present the case of a 54-year-old woman with refractory right-sided trigeminal neuralgia and idiopathic thrombocytopenic purpura. Due to her idiopathic thrombocytopenic purpura and a new acute cerebrovascular accident, she was not a candidate for microvascular decompr

Successful Cryoballoon Ablation in Paroxysmal Atrial Fibrillation Patient Post-Esophageal Cancer Surgery.

In conventional radiofrequency ablation for symptomatic paroxysmal atrial fibrillation, there are concerns regarding the risk of esophageal thermal injury (ETI), such as esophageal ulcers and left atrioesophageal fistulas. While the incidence of ETI is generally considered low with cryoballoon ablation, some cases of esophageal ulcers and gastric hypoperistalsis have been reported. In this report, we present the case of a 77-year-old male patient with atrial fibrillation after esophageal surgery who had successfully undergone cryoballoon ablation without esophageal complications, despite the c

Rectal mesenteric metastasis from prostate cancer treated with adjunctive hydrodissection during cryoablation.

Cryoablation is a safe and promising technique for patients with solid tumors. However, when adjacent to vulnerable structures, appropriate protective measures are necessary while carrying out this procedure. Herein, we present a case of a prostate cancer patient with rectal mesenteric metastasis who underwent cryoablation. The lesion was separated from the rectum by hydrodissection. No grade II-IV adverse events were encountered intraoperatively, and dramatic improvements in the stool were observed. These findings indicate that cryoablation combined with hydrodissection is a safe and reliable

Hydrodissection During Computed Tomography-Guided Cryoablation for Renal Tumors: Where is the Effective Fluid Accumulation Space in the Retroperitoneum?

PURPOSE: This study was performed to investigate the effectiveness of hydrodissection during computed tomography-guided renal cryoablation by evaluation of the fluid distribution based on the retroperitoneal anatomy with the interfascial plane. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Between March 2014 and March 2021, 52 renal tumors were treated by cryoablation with hydrodissection (36 men; mean age 72.5 years). The hydrodissection needle was located in perirenal space. The spreading fluid space based on the retroperitoneal anatomy with the interfascial plane was retrospectively evaluated. The fluid space th

Localization and Spread of Challenging Conduction Gaps of Pulmonary Veins for Atrial Fibrillation Cryoablation.

BACKGROUND: Cryoballoon ablation has been widely performed in patients with paroxysmal atrial fibrillation (AF). In some challenging pulmonary veins (PVs), the procedure requires additional touch-up applications against the residual conduction gaps. It implies that there could exist difficult sites to cover with standard cryoballoon applications (CBAs), resulting in resistant conduction gaps (RCGs). This study aims to characterize the RCGs after initial CBAs. METHODS: We retrospectively enrolled 90 consecutive paroxysmal AF patients in our institute from January 2018 to December 2021 (66.5 ±
