INTRODUCTION: Despite it being a benign disease, a choledochal cyst must be removed with the gallbladder (GB) due to the risk of cancer in the biliary tract. Most patients are young females or children, all of whom express strong interest in the cosmetic results in addition to the complete resolution of their medical problems. Here, we introduce a laparoscopic management technique for a choledochal cyst.
METHODS: Between 2003 and 2011, we performed a laparoscopic choledochal cyst excision procedure on 82 patients using a four-hole method. There were three open-conversion cases, one case invol

A 1-year-old boy presented with an extremely rare neurenteric cyst of the craniocervical junction manifesting as weakness in all extremities, slowly progressing over 2 months with rapid deterioration during the last few days. Neurological examination on admission showed tetraparesis with hyper-reflexia in the extremities. Magnetic resonance imaging demonstrated an intradural extramedullary cystic lesion located ventrally to the cord, extending from the craniocervical junction to the C3 level. The cyst wall was not enhanced with contrast medium, and the cyst content was isointense to the cerebr

STUDY DESIGN: This is a retrospective cohort review.
OBJECTIVE: To determine whether a correlation exists between facet cysts and lumbar instability.
SUMMARY OF BACKGROUND DATA: Lumbar facet cysts are common degenerative entities observed in patients with low-grade spondylolisthesis at a rate of 10%-50%. Surgical management with partial facetectomy with or without fusion remains controversial.
METHODS: Review of 86 patients with lumbar degenerative spondylolisthesis is performed. Preoperative magnetic resonance imagings were reviewed for the presence of lumbar facet cysts and Facet Fluid In

A 54-year-old man presented with the left inguinal swelling. The operation was performed with diagnosis of the hydrocele of spermatic cord. A tumor was 3.0 cm x 2.5 cm in size, cystic with yellowish serous fluid. After the operation, this tumor is diagnosed as mesothelial cyst through the histopathologic examination. This is a rare case, however it is worth to consider that there is a possibility to be a mesothelial cyst when the tumor has been found at the inguinal region.

We describe a case of multilocular thymic cyst with severe acute inflammation. A 23-year-old man was admitted to our hospital with a sudden onset of chest pain and high fever. A computed tomography scan showed multilocular cystic lesion at anterior mediastinum. We resected the tumor with the thymus by median sternotomy. Macroscopically, the mediastinal mass showed thick-walled multiloculated cavities filled with turbid yellow fluid. Histological examination revealed that the tumor was a multilocular thymic cyst which is reported by Suster.

Intracranial epidermoids can closely mimic cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) on MRI and CT. Therefore epidermoids can be difficult to detect, or distinguish from CSF. Three cases of intracranial epidermoid are presented, one of which closely mimicked an arachnoid cyst on CT and routine MRI sequences. Diffusion-weighted magnetic resonance imaging (DWI) was performed. All three epidermoids demonstrated marked restriction of diffusion relative to CSF, clearly defining the extent of each lesion, and allowing differentiation from an arachnoid cyst or an enlarged CSF space.

Autosomal dominant polycystic kidney disease (ADPKD) is a common monogenic disease characterized by massive enlargement of fluid-filled cysts in the kidney. There is an urgent need to develop effective ADPKD therapies. We used an in vitro Madin-Darby canine kidney (MDCK) cyst model and a murine embryonic kidney cyst model to evaluate whether quercetin inhibits cyst development. We then used a polycystic kidney disease (PKD) mouse model to further determine the in vivo effects of quercetin (100 mg per kg body weight twice per day) on PKD mice via subcutaneous injections. The results show that q

The relationship between sonographic image and histological findings of 149 hepatic hydatid cysts was studied in 98 patients with primary hepatic hydatid disease. Sonographic classification was based on the morphology and structure of the cyst, which is thought to correspond to developmental stages of the hydatid cyst. The types were classified as follow: Type I: simple fluid-filled cyst denoted as the early stage of the disease; Type II: with undulated membrane representing detached endocyst secondary to rupture; Type III: with daughter cysts and a formed echogenic material called matrix; Typ

Prostate-specific antigen, a 33 kDa serine protease, is found at high concentrations in seminal plasma and prostate epithelial cells. It is currently used for the diagnosis and monitoring of prostate carcinoma. However, several investigators have demonstrated nonprostatic sources of prostate specific antigen, including amniotic fluid, breast milk, breast cyst fluid, nipple aspirate fluid, and breast tumor cytosol. Studies have revealed that a high prostate-specific antigen level in tumors of women with breast cancer is associated with good prognosis. This finding is analyzed in this manuscript…

BACKGROUND CONTEXT: Spinal arachnoid cysts (SACs) are rare, cerebrospinal fluid-filled sacs lined by an arachnoid membrane in the spinal canal. Symptoms can develop due to pressure on the spinal cord or adjacent spinal nerves by the cyst itself or by interrupted flow of cerebrospinal fluid. If noninvasive management fails or neurological deterioration occurs, surgical treatment is recommended. However, data is lacking on long-term outcomes after surgery.
PURPOSE: To determine long-term outcomes in patients surgically treated for SACs.
STUDY DESIGN: Population-based cohort-study.

INTRODUCTION: Subdural hygroma is a known complication of Sylvian fissure arachnoid cysts (SACs). However, most of the data in the literature refer to spontaneous or posttraumatic occurrence of subdural hygromas, regarded as either a favorable or an unfavorable event. Little is known about this phenomenon as a consequence of the surgical management of SACs. The present study was carried out to evaluate the significance of postoperative subdural hygromas in children with temporal arachnoid cysts, who have been treated with craniotomy and wide marsupialization of the cystic membrane.

Cyst enlargement in polycystic kidney disease (PKD) involves cAMP-activated proliferation of cyst-lining epithelial cells and transepithelial fluid secretion into the cyst lumen via cystic fibrosis transmembrane conductance regulator (CFTR) chloride channel. This study aimed to investigate an inhibitory effect and detailed mechanisms of steviol and its derivatives on cyst growth using a cyst model in Madin-Darby canine kidney (MDCK) cells. Among 4 steviol-related compounds tested, steviol was found to be the most potent at inhibiting MDCK cyst growth. Steviol inhibition of cyst growth was dose

A cyst is a blind pouch of tissue, which may be containing air, fluid, pus or any other substance. Vaginal wall cysts are located on or under the vaginal wall lining, are usually asymptomatic and may present as a small lump felt in the vagina or protruding from the vagina. These cysts can be of varying sizes, ranging from the size of a pea to that of an orange. These may get infected and present with inflammatory signs and symptoms. We report here a case of a 38-year-old female who presented with complaints of something coming out of her vagina, initially mistaken to be uterovaginal prolapse,

A 4-year-old Andalusian horse was presented for examination following a 3-month history of exophthalmos of the right eye and a soft swelling of the right supraorbital fossa noted after blunt head trauma. Ultrasonographic examination of the swelling showed an anecogenic mass of 5 cm in diameter involving the retrobulbar space. Centesis of the mass through the supraorbital fossa was performed and yielded a serous fluid with 7.2 g/dL of total protein and density of 1040. No cells were seen in the sample. A tentative diagnosis of cyst was made. The cyst was surgically removed and the definitive hi

The liver is the most frequent site of Echinococcus granulosus cysts. The radiological features of 22 cases are described. The ultrasound and computed tomography (CT) appearances are emphasised and the literature is reviewed. Cysts can be single or multiple and appear uni- or multilocular. Calcification occurs in about a quarter of cases. The cyst wall is usually thin and well-defined but may be thick and can enhance on CT. Separation of the laminated membrane from the pericyst produces a 'split wall' appearance. Complete collapse of the laminated membrane results in an ultrasound 'water lily

Computed tomography in pediatric patients with intracerebral cysts due to Echinococcus granulosus is diagnostic and specific and usually shows a single supratentorial round nonenhancing thin-walled cyst with CT density measurements near zero. Small calcified portions of the cyst wall, which are not visible on skull radiography, may be seen with CT and help differentiate echinococcal cysts from other cystic lesions. Preoperative diagnosis is important because, on entering the dura, an echinococcal cyst must not be lacerated or fluid that contains infectious scolices may be spilled, causing addi

A 46-year-old woman visited our outpatient clinic complaining of dull right hypochondrial pain. Ultrasonography revealed four cysts in the right lobe of the liver. Arteriography and CT could not determine whether these cysts were benign or malignant. Because one of these cysts contained chocolate-colored fluid, amebic abscess was suspected, and the cyst was drained. No amebae were found in the cultured exudate, and fresh bleeding continued; therefore, laparotomy was performed. A tumor was present on the surface of the liver. Right lobectomy was performed. The resected specimen contained one no
