This article is a review of the current pharmacologic treatment options for acute cystitis in adults. It is intended to provide the urologic nurse with practical information regarding the administration of the most frequently prescribed antimicrobial drugs. Pharmacologic agents discussed are of the following classes of antimicrobials: beta-lactam antibiotics, fluoroquinolones, sulfonamides, and urinary-specific antiinfectives. Salmonellae are frequently isolated from urine during the course of typhoid fever, although cystitis in typhoid is rare. In a young man who had returned from India with severe hemorrhagic cystitis, urine and bone marrow cultures confirmed the diagnosis of typhoid. Full recovery followed treatment with chloramphenicol. Hemorrhagic cystitis is generally a benign self-limited disorder, however there are some severe cases which are associated to a significant blood loss. The etiology may be either bacterial, viral or chemical in origin; though the cause is not identified in most of the cases. Bladder substitution with an ileocolic segment after total cystectomy was performed in 5 women with a severely contracted bladder secondary to interstitial cystitis. A case of BK virus cystitis in a 5 year old boy is reported. This patient, who was not immunocompromised, had had acute cystitis for two weeks. Many intracytoplasmic inclusions were observed in urinary sediment smears stained by the Papanicolaou method. Electron microscopic examination showed virus particles, presumed to be human polyomavirus, in the nuclei of the degenerated urothelial cells. A DNA sequence of the BK virus was detected in 200-300 urothelial cells in Papanicolaou stained smears by the polymerase chain reaction.
