[Unusual course of a case of urethral rhabdomyosarcoma in a 10-year-old boy].

The authors report a case of rhabdomyosarcoma of posterior urethra they observed in a 10 year-old boy who was referred for an acute urinary retention. The story of the patient included other urinary tract troubles: macroscopic haematuria and stranguria had been observed when the boy was four year old and at that time cystography and cystoscopy grave normal results. In the following years the patient presented repeatedly episodes of haematuria, stranguria, dysuria and urinary tract infections. The authors stress the slow evolution of the tumor and the difficulties for diagnosing the disease in …

[Colovesical fistula of diverticular origin. Diagnostic and therapeutic aspects. 17 cases].

Seventeen patients presenting with diverticular colovesical fistula were treated surgically between 1975 and 1979. Any treatment of the fistula must aim at the cause--colonic diverticulitis--by resection of the colon and colorectal anastomosis. Colostomy was performed in two cases. The bladder was closed by simple suture and a urethral catheter was left in place for ten days. There were few complications, though one patient died. Pneumaturia and fecaluria are specific symptoms. Intravenous pyelography and cystoscopy are of little assistance and only a barium enema should be performed for preop…

Genitourinary complications of abdominoperineal resection.

The genitourinary complications of 86 consecutive cases of abdominoperineal resection at the University of Oklahoma Health Sciences Center are described. Vesical dysfunction was the most common problem, occurring in 11 patients in our series. Eight required prostatectomy for urinary retention. The significance and treatment of vesical dysfunction is somewhat controversial, but an attempt to document the cause should be made in every case. Voiding symptoms and results of intravenous urogram with postvoiding films, cystogram, cystometrogram, and cystoscopy are diagnostically pertinent. According…

Bladder Herpes Infection in a Patient With Low-grade Non-Muscle-invasive Bladder Cancer.

Bladder herpes is a very uncommon event related to herpes simplex virus infection. We report a 69-year-old man with 4-year history of bladder cancer who presented with dysuria and urinary frequency. Cystoscopy showed erythematous lesion of the bladder mucosa that was biopsied and revealed multilobed nuclei with eosinophilic intranuclear inclusions, and presence of intracytoplasmic vacuoles that were suggestive of bladder involvement by herpes simplex virus. Different bladder disorders have been associated with herpes virus, but spontaneous resolution generally occurs in 1-2 months.

[Nested variant of urothelial carcinoma of bladder : a case report].

A 58-year-old man visited our hospital with gross hematuria. Cystoscopy revealed a papillary tumor around the left ureteral orifice. Transurethral resection of bladder tumor (TUR-Bt) was performed and histopathological findings revealed a nested variant of urothelial carcinoma. Computed tomography (CT) revealed no involvement of other organs. Laparoscopic radical cystectomy and orthotopic neobladder substitution (Studer methods) were performed. The histopathological stage was pT3aN0M0. Adjuvant chemotherapy (gemcitabine + cisplatin) was performed. The patient is currently free from disease at …

Laparoscopic and cystopic findings in patients with chronic pelvic pain in Eshowe, South Africa.

Forty two Zulu women who reported pelvic pain of more than six months duration were evaluated using laparoscopy and cystoscopy. Chronic pelvic inflammatory disease (57 pc) and pelvic adhesions (12 pc) involving the reproductive organs were the most common pathologies found. An interesting associated finding was a very high incidence (21.5 pc) of schistosomiasis. We are not able to find any pelvic pathology in only 14.4 pc of patients. This study confirms the opinion that chronic pelvic pain is usually associated with organic pathology.

[Vesico-intestinal fistulae].

Review of vesicointestinal fistulae cases treated in the Urology Unit at our hospital over the last few years. Most frequently seen cause was colorectal cancer (66%) and most frequent location was vesicosigmoideal (50%). Clinical signs and symptoms were varied, mainly urinary infection in 100% cases, pneumaturia in 66% and fecaluria in 50%. Opaque enema and cystography were great diagnostic aids as complementary methods. Also U.I.V., cystoscopy, rectoscopy and C.A.T. were used. Treatment was surgical in all cases where the patient's general health status allowed it.

Advanced female urethral adenocarcinoma: A case report.

Urethral cancer in females is a rare occurrence. Although initially believed to be derived from skene glands, there is no consensus on the cell of origin. Squamous cell carcinoma is the most common, whereas adenocarcinoma is the least common. We report the case of a 58-years-old lady with a history of voiding lower urinary tract symptoms, later requiring a suprapubic cystostomy for retention. Cystoscopy and biopsy showed prostate-specific antigen (PSA) negative adenocarcinoma and postiron emission computed tomography (PETCT) showing pelvic and inguinal nodal metastasis. The patient underwent n…

Single-use digital flexible cystoscope for double J removal versus reusable instruments: a prospective, comparative study of functionality, risk of infection, and costs.

BACKGROUND: The removal of ureteral stent can be performed with disposable or reusable flexible cystoscopes, but limited comparative data are available on functionality, risk of infections, and costs. METHODS: We performed a multicentric, prospective, observational study on patients undergoing in-office ureteral stent removal with Isiris-α® or a reusable Storz™ flexible cystoscope. Study endpoints were the functionality and effectiveness of the devices, the rate of postoperative bacteriuria and UTIs, and the costs of the procedure. RESULTS: A total of 135 patients were included, 80 (59.2%) t

Posterior urethral polyp in children.

BACKGROUND: Polyps of the urethra is a rare cause of obstruction of the lower urinary tract. The clinical presentation is not specific; the symptoms vary and may be isolated or associated, including acute retention of urine, dysuria, and hematuria. Ultrasound and voiding urethrocystography guide the diagnosis. Urethrocystoscopy confirms the diagnosis and allow the treatment. Our aim is to bring to light this rare condition and report our experience in the management of posterior urethral polyps. SUBJECT AND METHODS: A retrospective study of posterior urethral polyp presented from 2008 to 2019…

Seamless post-operative removal of JJ stents in the paediatric population: Securing the JJ stent to the tip of the urethral balloon catheter avoids a further operation.

In children, removal of a post-procedural JJ stent requires a further cystoscopy under general anaesthetic. We describe securing the distal end of the ureteric stent to the tip of a balloon catheter at the end of the primary procedure. Once post-operative oedema has subsided, the stent is removed seamlessly in tandem with the balloon catheter. This can be done on the ward by nursing staff without the need for general anaesthesia or sedation. Our experience in the first 10 successive patients (aged 1.6-16.3 years) demonstrates this technique to be safe, easy to learn and well tolerated.

Clinical guidelines for interstitial cystitis and hypersensitive bladder updated in 2015.

Clinical guidelines for interstitial cystitis and hypersensitive bladder have been updated as of 2015. The guidelines define interstitial cy … abladder disorders. Definite diagnosis of interstitial cystitis and hypersensitive bladder requires cystoscopy with or without hydrodistension. Most of the therapeutic options lack a high level of evidence, leaving a few as recommended therapeutic options.

Laparoscopic repair of inguinal cystocele using cystoscopic light test.

OBJECTIVE: To describe how the cystoscopic light test aids in the repair of inguinal bladder herniation. METHODS: After the diagnosis of a bladder herniation into the right inguinal canal using intravenous pyelography, laparoscopic repair was planned. A cystoscope was manipulated into the defect while turning off the laparoscopic light intra-abdominally. The light of the cystoscope could be identified through the cystocele, and the neck of the hernia was easily recognized. Once the bladder was reduced, the cystoscope was replaced, and reduction of the herniation was confirmed. RESULTS: We we

Transvaginal repair of a vesico-vaginal fistula using a mobilised vaginal flap to form the bladder base: a case report.

We describe a case of a vesico-vaginal fistula in a 32-year-old lady presenting with true urinary incontinence. There was a 1.5 x 1.5 cm deficit in the bladder wall and the left ureteric orifice was very close to the edge of the defect. For a successful transvaginal repair, we used a mobilized vaginal flap to bridge the defect in the bladder wall. This avoided the mobilization of the bladder wall and also prevented the left ureteric orifice from getting entrapped in the suture line. Adjacent wall of vagina was mobilized and stitched over the first layer to achieve water tight repair. Her post
