The thiocarbamide antithyroid drugs, methimazole and propylthiouracil, suppressed natural killer (NK) cell-induced cytolysis in vitro (determined by the release of 51Cr-chromate from labelled target cells) in a dose-dependent manner. Parallel experiments demonstrated a similar reduction in NK cell luminol chemiluminescence during activation by K562 tumour cells. It would appear, therefore, that an association may exist between NK cell-induced cytolysis and the peroxidase/oxygenase activity of these lymphocytes.

Natural killer (NK) activity was assayed in peripheral blood mononuclear cells of patients with schistosomiasis, of patients following treatment, and of uninfected control subjects. Disseminated histoplasmosis is associated with depression of T cell-mediated immunity and in some cases anergy. In this report, two patients with disseminated disease are described. Both had a depression of T cell-mediated immunity as well as other abnormalities of immune response. In one, a patient with relapse, a marked depression in the ratio of T helper to T suppressor cells was noted. Neither patient had any predisposing condition known to be associated with disseminated disease.

Fatal meningitis following intracerebral inoculation of lymphocytic choriomeningitis virus (LCMV) reflects an immunopathological lesion believed to be mediated by cytotoxic T cells. In response to tuberculin, lymphocytes derived from BCG-sensitized guinea pigs elaborated soluble materials capable of inducing some reactions in vitro which correlated with the cell-mediated immune response in vivo. Autoimmune thyroiditis was induced in two vervet monkeys by immunizing them with human thyroid extract. As expected, both animals developed cytotoxic antibodies which were active against human thyroid and other human cells in tissue culture. In addition, a second serum factor was detected. This was capable of sensitizing human thyroid (and other) cells and rendering them susceptible to killing by normal lymphocytes. This finding implicates antibody-dependent cell-mediated cytotoxicity in the pathogenesis of autoimmune thyroiditis.
