Dystonia Deafness Syndrome: A Rare Deep Brain Stimulation Responsive Dystonia.

Dystonia deafness syndrome (DDS) is a rare syndrome characterized by childhood onset sensorineural deafness followed by adult-onset dystonia. We here report the first case of DDS from India caused by ACTB gene mutation presented with deafness, generalized dystonia and scoliosis who showed improvement after Deep brain stimulation.

The unnoticed zoo: Inattentional deafness to animal sounds in music.

Inattentional unawareness potentially occurs in several different sensory domains but is mainly described in visual paradigms ("inattentional blindness"; e.g., Simons & Chabris, 1999, Perception, 28, 1059-1074). Dalton and Fraenkel (2012, Cognition, 124, 367-372) were introducing "inattentional deafness" by showing that participants missed by 70% a voice repeatedly saying "I'm a Gorilla" when focusing on a primary conversation. The present study expanded this finding from the acoustic domain in a multifaceted way: First, we extended the validity perspective by using 10 acoustic samples-specifi…

[The cochlear implantation in patients with syndromic deafness. Clinical examples].

OBJECTIVE: To describe clinical observations of patients with syndromic deafness. RESULTS: Deaf patients with CHARGE, Crouzon, and Wildervanck syndromes were monitored at the Russian Research Clinical Center for Audiology and Hearing Rehabilitation (Moscow) in different years. All of them were diagnosed having bilateral congenital deafness. After collecting anamnesis, evaluating the results of computed tomography of the temporal bones, and audiological examination, it was decided to conduct the cochlear implantation. CONCLUSION: The only method that allows patients with bilateral congenital …

Variable Autoinhibition among Deafness-Associated Variants of Diaphanous 1 (DIAPH1).

One of the earliest mapped human deafness genes, DIAPH1, encodes the formin DIAPH1. To date, at least three distinct mutations in the C-terminal domains and two additional mutations in the N-terminal region are associated with autosomal dominant hearing loss. The underlying molecular mechanisms are not known, and the role of formins in the inner ear is not well understood. In this study, we use biochemical assays to test the hypotheses that autoinhibition and/or actin assembly activities are disrupted by DFNA1 mutations. Our results indicate that C-terminal mutant forms of DIAPH1 are functiona…

Central auditory deficits associated with genetic forms of peripheral deafness.

Since the 1990s, the study of inherited hearing disorders, mostly those detected at birth, in the prelingual period or in young adults, has led to the identification of their causal genes. The genes responsible for more than 140 isolated (non-syndromic) and about 400 syndromic forms of deafness have already been discovered. Studies of mouse models of these monogenic forms of deafness have provided considerable insight into the molecular mechanisms of hearing, particularly those involved in the development and/or physiology of the auditory sensory organ, the cochlea. In parallel, studies of the…

Labyrinthine lesions in presumed inner ear hemorrhage-related sudden deafness.

PURPOSE: Inner ear hemorrhage (IEH) is a rare cause of sudden sensorineural hearing loss (SSNHL). This study aimed to evaluate the lesional patterns in patients with presumed IEH from morphological and functional aspects. METHODS: Seventeen patients with SSNHL and presumed IEH who completed audio-vestibular tests were included. The main outcome measures included clinical characteristics, radiology, and functional test results. RESULTS: The morphological findings and functional tests revealed differences in locations and lesional spectrums. The magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) hyperintensity

Genetic architecture and phenotypic landscape of deafness and onychodystrophy syndromes.

Deafness and onychodystrophy syndromes are a group of phenotypically overlapping syndromes, which include DDOD syndrome (dominant deafness-onychodystrophy), DOORS syndrome (deafness, onychodystrophy, osteodystrophy, mental retardation and seizures) and Zimmermann-Laband syndrome (gingival hypertrophy, coarse facial features, hypoplasia or aplasia of nails and terminal phalanges, intellectual disability, and hypertrichosis). Pathogenic variants in four genes, ATP6V1B2, TBC1D24, KCNH1 and KCNN3, have been shown to be associated with deafness and onychodystrophy syndromes. ATP6V1B2 encodes a comp…

Delayed traumatic intracerebral hematoma presenting as cortical deafness: case report.

Cortical deafness is a rare condition and is usually caused by bilateral cerebral lesions. Several cases of sudden cortical deafness caused by ischemic stroke or hypertensive intracerebral hematoma have been reported, however, no cases of traumatic cortical deafness were identified in our literature search. We experienced a case of delayed traumatic intracerebral hematoma (DTICH) presenting as cortical deafness. In our patient, warfarin intake seemed to be a risk factor for DTICH. Head injury may adversely affect the coagulability and thrombolysis. A high risk of DTICH after traumatic head inj…

Fetal antisense oligonucleotide therapy for congenital deafness and vestibular dysfunction.

Disabling hearing loss impacts ∼466 million individuals worldwide with 34 million children affected. Gene and pharmacotherapeutic strategies to rescue auditory function in mouse models of human deafness are most effective when administered before hearing onset, after which therapeutic efficacy is significantly diminished or lost. We hypothesize that preemptive correction of a mutation in the fetal inner ear prior to maturation of the sensory epithelium will optimally restore sensory function. We previously demonstrated that transuterine microinjection of a splice-switching antisense oligonucle…

Cortical Deafness Due to Ischaemic Strokes in Both Temporal Lobes.

Cortical deafness is a clinical rarity whereby a patient is unresponsive to all types of sounds despite the preserved integrity of the peripheral hearing organs. In this study, we present a patient who suddenly lost his hearing following ischaemic infarcts in both temporal lobes with no other neurological deficits. The CT confirmed damage to the primary auditory cortex (Heschl's gyrus) of both hemispheres. Initially, the patient was unresponsive to all sounds, however, he regained some of the auditory abilities during 10 months follow up. Pure tone threshold improvement from complete deafness …

Corticostriatal functional connectivity of bothersome tinnitus in single-sided deafness.

Subjective tinnitus is an auditory phantom perceptual disorder without an objective biomarker. Bothersome tinnitus in single-sided deafness (SSD) is particularly challenging to treat because the deaf ear can no longer be stimulated by acoustic means. We contrasted an SSD cohort with bothersome tinnitus (TIN; N = 15) against an SSD cohort with no or non-bothersome tinnitus (NO TIN; N = 15) using resting-state functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI). All study participants had normal hearing in one ear and severe or profound hearing loss in the other. We evaluated corticostriatal functional…

Sensorineural Deafness After Spine Surgery: Case Series and Literature Review.

BACKGROUND: Sudden sensorineural hearing loss (SNHL) after nonotologic surgery is unusual, with most occurrences reported in patients having cardiopulmonary bypass. Reports of SNHL after nonotologic noncardiac surgery are rare, particularly after spine surgery. In patients undergoing subarachnoid anesthesia or intradural surgery, loss of cerebrospinal fluid pressure can result in hearing loss and cranial nerve palsy. METHODS: A 70-year-old male patient had ankylosing spondylitis with an Anderson lesion T11-12 with diabetes mellitus, hypertension, and American Spinal Injury Association Impairm
