Temporal dynamics of soil microbial C and N cycles with GHG fluxes in the transition from tropical peatland forest to oil palm plantation.

Tropical peatlands significantly influence local and global carbon and nitrogen cycles, yet they face growing pressure from anthropogenic activities. Land use changes, such as peatland forests conversion to oil palm plantations, affect the soil microbiome and greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions. However, the temporal dynamics of microbial community changes and their role as GHG indicators are not well understood. This study examines the dynamics of peat chemistry, soil microbial communities, and GHG emissions from 2016 to 2020 in a logged-over secondary peat swamp forest in Sarawak, Malaysia, which

Fifty years of environmental progress for United States dairy farms.

Dairy farms in the United States have changed in many ways over the past 50 yr. Milk production efficiency has increased greatly, with ∼30% fewer cows producing about twice the amount of milk today. Other improvements include increases in crop yields, fuel efficiency of farm equipment, and efficiency in producing most resources used on farms (e.g. electricity, fuel, fertilizer). These improvements have led to changes in the environmental impact of farms. Through simulation of representative dairy farms in 1971 and 2020, changes in nutrient losses and farmgate life cycle assessments of greenhou

Environmental nitrogen losses in winter wheat across yield zones under long-term precipitation variability.

Nitrogen (N) loss dynamics from winter wheat in humid agroecosystems remain uncertain due to variability in soil characteristics across yield zones and high interannual precipitation variability. We hypothesized that dominant N loss pathways vary significantly across yield zones, driven primarily by the interaction of soil hydrology and rainfall patterns. The objective of this study was to integrate field experimentation with process-based modeling to identify and quantify environmental N loss (Nenvloss) pathways across contrasting yield zones under long-term climatic variability. In this stud

Soil moisture dynamics, fertiliser timing and fertiliser nitrogen form (nitrate: ammonium ratio) drive nitrous oxide (N2O) emission patterns in a temperate grassland.

Although both straight N and NPK (nitrogen, phosphorus, potassium) compound fertilisers are widely used, the influence of nitrate (NO3--N) to ammonium (NH4+-N) ratios in these fertilisers on nitrous oxide (N2O) emission dynamics remains poorly quantified. This study examined how fertilisers with contrasting NO3--N to NH4+-N ratios influence N2O emissions under varying environmental conditions, over a growing year in an Irish grassland soil. A randomised block field experiment was conducted on a moderately drained luvisol with a perennial ryegrass (Lolium perenne) sward. Fertilisers with varyin

Effect of Fe2+-activated persulfate combined with biodegradation in removing gasoline BTX from karst groundwater: A box-column experimental study.

In-situ chemical oxidation with persulfate (PS-ISCO) is a preferred approach for the remediation of fuel-contaminated groundwater. Persulfate (PS) can be activated by various methods to produce stronger sulfate radicals for more efficient ISCO. Despite karst aquifers being widespread, there are few reports on PS-ISCO combined with Fe2+-activated PS. To better understand the effects of Fe2+-activated PS for the remediation of gasoline-contaminated aquifers in karst areas, a box-column experiment was conducted under flow conditions, using karst groundwater and limestone particles to simulate an

Diversity of dirammox microorganisms.

UNLABELLED: Our knowledge of the nitrogen cycle has been advanced by the discovery of anammox bacteria, ammonia-oxidizing archaea, and comammox bacteria, along with their high diversity. Direct ammonia oxidation (dirammox), a recently discovered heterotrophic nitrification pathway, converts ammonium and organic nitrogen directly to N2 through the DnfABC multienzyme system, further expanding our understanding of the nitrogen cycle. However, the taxonomic distribution, prevalence, and nitrogen metabolic potential of microorganisms encoding dirammox genes remain poorly understood. Here, large-sca

Prescribed burns drive lasting changes in soil nitrogen cycling and microbial function.

Fire is a major pulse disturbance to soil microbial communities, with broad implications for nutrient cycling; however, regular burning is also a natural and often-essential process maintaining biodiversity in unique and imperiled fire-dependent ecosystems. Prescribed fire is widely used to promote this biodiversity and simultaneously reduce wildfire risk. Although such repeated burning is known to alter surface biodiversity, belowground soil geochemistry, and soil microbial community structure, the functional consequences (i.e., the metabolic capabilities that underlie the ecosystem services

Nitrous oxide is the main product during nitrate reduction by a novel lithoautotrophic iron(II)-oxidizing culture from an organic-rich paddy soil.

Microbial nitrate reduction coupled to iron(II) oxidation (NRFeOx) occurs in paddy soils due to high levels of dissolved iron(II) and regular application of nitrogen fertilizer. However, to date, there is no lithoautotrophic NRFeOx isolate or enrichment culture available from this soil environment. Thus, resulting impacts on greenhouse gas emissions during nitrate reduction (i.e., nitrous oxide [N2O]) and on toxic metalloid (i.e., arsenic) mobility can hardly be investigated. We enriched a lithoautotrophic NRFeOx culture, culture HP (Huilongpu paddy, named after its origin), from a paddy soil
