BACKGROUND: To explore the depression and anxiety symptoms in the postpartum period during the SARS-CoV-2 pandemic and to identify potential risk factors.
METHODS: A multicentre observational cohort study including 536 women was performed at three hospitals in Spain. The Edinburgh Postnatal Depression Scale (EPDS), the State-Trait Anxiety Inventory (STAI) Scale, the Medical Outcomes Study Social Support Survey (MOS-SSS), and the Postpartum Bonding Questionnaire (PBQ) were assessed after birth. Depression (EPDS) and anxiety (STAI) symptoms were measured, and the cut-off scores were set at 10 a

This study is aimed at revealing the risk factors, prognosis, influence on offspring, and genetic architecture of perinatal depression (PD) classified based on the depressive symptom trajectory. Pregnant women with no history of major depressive disorder (MDD) were recruited and followed up with their offspring from 1 to 5 years postpartum. Using four self-report questionnaires in the perinatal period, PD was classified into four subtypes: pregnancy, early postpartum, late postpartum, and chronic PD. Risk factors, depressive symptom trajectory from 1 to 5 years postpartum, and child behavior p

INTRODUCTION: Research is needed that prospectively characterizes the intergenerational pattern of effects of childhood maltreatment and lifetime posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) on women's mental health in pregnancy and on postpartum mental health and bonding outcomes. This prospective study included 566 nulliparous women in 3 cohorts: PTSD-positive, trauma-exposed resilient, and not exposed to trauma.
METHODS: Trauma history, PTSD diagnosis, and depression diagnosis were ascertained using standardized telephone interviews with women who were pregnant at less than 28 gestational weeks. A

OBJECTIVES: Postpartum anxiety is understudied and underdiagnosed. Given associations between postpartum anxiety and adverse maternal and infant outcomes, it is crucial to identify patterns and predictors of postpartum anxiety. We examined the associations between sleep duration and timing and postpartum anxiety over 6 months following delivery.
METHODS: A convenience sample of pregnant women with a history of depression (n = 162; 30-39 weeks) completed self-report measures of sleep, anxiety, and depression in the third trimester and once/month for 6 months following delivery. Concurrent and

(1) Background: The COVID-19 pandemic caused widespread upheaval, presenting unique challenges for pregnant and postpartum women, who were already in a particularly vulnerable phase. As the COVID-19 pandemic and its public health response unfolded, it became crucial for clinicians and researchers to explore postpartum depression within the context of a global crisis. (2) Methods: We used data from two cross-sectional surveys of postnatal women conducted in our tertiary academic public hospital during the SARS-CoV-2 pandemic and the post-pandemic period, based on the retrospective assessments o

OBJECTIVE: Intimate partner violence (IPV) victimization during pregnancy is a pervasive public health problem that is associated with mental health difficulties and increased rates of substance use, including cannabis. Despite being contraindicated by medical professionals, cannabis use during pregnancy is on the rise. Preliminary research among the general population suggests that cannabis use is associated with later mental health difficulties. While pregnancy IPV is associated with poorer postpartum mental health, less is known about the effects of pregnancy cannabis use on postpartum ment

Maternal obesity has been associated with postpartum depression and a protective role of physical activity is indicated. This study aims to examine the role of moderate and vigorous physical activity (MVPA) in the prospective association between body mass index (BMI) and depressive symptoms in a cohort of mothers. Depressive symptoms were assessed at 3 and 48 months postpartum using the Edinburgh Depression Scale. BMI was calculated from weight and height measurements at 24 months postpartum and self-reported pre-pregnancy weight. MVPA was measured by accelerometers at 12-16 weeks of pregnancy

Perinatal depression, which includes major and minor depressive episodes that occur during pregnancy or in the first 12 months after delivery, is one of the most common medical complications during pregnancy and the postpartum period, affecting one in seven women. It is important to identify pregnant and postpartum women with depression because untreated perinatal depression and other mood disorders can have devastating effects. Several screening instruments have been validated for use during pregnancy and the postpartum period. The American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists recommend

BACKGROUND: Postpartum depression is a common psychiatric complaint of women following delivery and a multitude of psychosocial, maternal, newborn and husband-related factors were contributing to it. This condition has a detrimental impact on the mother-infant caregiving relationship and hastens the infant's cognitive, emotional and social development. However, a shortage of empirical evidence existed especially in developing countries including Ethiopia. Therefore, we implemented this study to determine the magnitude of postpartum depression and its correlates.

BACKGROUND: The prevalence of perinatal depression increased during the COVID-19 pandemic, which may be due to changes in the profile of specific depressive symptoms.
AIMS: To analyze the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on the (1) prevalence and severity of specific depressive symptoms; and on the (2) prevalence of clinically significant symptoms of depression during pregnancy and postpartum.
METHODS: Pregnant and postpartum women recruited before (n = 2395) and during the COVID-19 pandemic (n = 1396) completed a sociodemographic and obstetric questionnaire and the Edinburgh Postnatal Depres

Perinatal depression is a major cause of disability for individuals giving birth worldwide, with detrimental effects on short- and long-term parental and child outcomes. There is emerging evidence that the neuroactive steroid hormone allopregnanolone is implicated in the pathophysiology and course of perinatal mood symptoms. However, no study thus far has examined allopregnanolone levels whilst making use of longitudinal data on depressive symptom trajectories throughout the perinatal period. The present study investigated levels of allopregnanolone at gestational week 17 of 252 participants i

The objective was to investigate associations of serum vitamin D concentration with depressive symptoms and assess the impact that vitamin D concentration has on the occurrence of depressive symptoms in 20-44-year-old pregnant women, postpartum women, non-pp women (non-pregnant/postpartum women), and men, including a separate subgroup analysis of postpartum breastfeeding and non-breastfeeding women. The study populations were selected from the 2007-2018 NHANES public data. Subjective interview data and objective laboratory data including depressive symptoms, serum vitamin D concentration, nutr

OBJECTIVE: To assess the impact of antecedent trauma on the risk of antenatal and postpartum depression in a prospective, longitudinal cohort of pregnant women.
METHOD: 374 participants (pregnant women aged 20-34 years) were recruited from a hospital-based obstetrics practice serving a predominantly low-income, inner-city population between May 2007 and May 2012. Clinical diagnostic interviews and psychosocial questionnaires were administered at 18 and 32 weeks of gestation and at 6 weeks and 6 months postpartum. Lifetime exposure to and details of traumatic events were recorded. Depression d

We examined the utility of screening instruments to identify risk factors for suicidal ideation (SI) in a population of women with neuropsychiatric illnesses at high risk for postpartum depression. Pregnant women with neuropsychiatric illness enrolled prior to 20 weeks of gestation. Follow-up visits at 4-8-week intervals through 13 weeks postpartum included assessment of depressive symptoms with both clinician and self-rated scales. A total of 842 women were included in the study. Up to 22.3% of postpartum women admitted SI on rating scales, despite the majority (79%) receiving active pharmaco

PURPOSE: Postpartum mood disorders affect many women following childbirth. Prescribing medication for depression and anxiety is one strategy for the effective treatment of postpartum mood disorders. Left untreated, mothers experiencing these disorders and their infants face increased risks of adverse health outcomes. Little is known about how diagnosis and treatment of postpartum mood disorders changed during COVID-19.
METHODS: We used a retrospective pooled cross-sectional design in a sample of privately-insured postpartum women in U.S. claims data from January 1, 2016 to December 31, 2020.
