By Southern hybridization using a genomic DNA fragment carrying a human IgE heavy chain constant region gene (C epsilon) as a probe, we analyzed the organization of human C epsilon genes and their flanking regions in 23 atopic dermatitis and 6 senile erythroderma patients with elevated serum IgE levels, and 6 atopic dermatitis patients with normal IgE levels. On Bam HI, Hind III, and Eco RI digestions, we detected three hybridizable fragments containing three human C epsilon genes, C epsilon 1, C epsilon 2, and C epsilon 3, respectively, in all leukocyte DNAs. These fragments were almost ident

Psoriasis affects 0.12% to 0.71% of all children. Erythrodermic psoriasis is an uncommon but serious disorder, occurring in less than 1.5% of cases. Tumor necrosis factor-alpha blockers (TNF-α) are a new class of drugs used to treat moderate to severe psoriasis refractory to conventional therapies. Etanercept is a TNFα receptor fusion protein, approved by the FDA for treating juvenile rheumatoid arthritis. We present the case of a 7-year-old suffering from plaque psoriasis since 8 months old which evolved into erythroderma refractory to cyclosporine and methotrexate. Patient responded excellen

Netherton syndrome is a very rare disorder characterized with icthyosis, atopy, bamboo hair and intermittant aminoaciduria. The specifity of clinical and histopathological features of netherton syndrome is low in neonates and young infants who presents with predominating erythrodermia. Being the youngest infant presenting with the symptoms of infantile asthma we found it worth to report a six months old girl presenting with the feature of severe respiratory distress, generalized erythrodermia, and brittle hair.

Staphylococcal scalded skin syndrome is a bullous disease induced by bacterial exfoliative exotoxins. Children are most often affected. The prognosis is worse in adults and calls for treatment in an intensive care unit. We report a case in a quinquagenerian woman who suffered from angina a few days before the bullous erythroderma.

A cat was presented with acute-onset exfoliative erythroderma and gross and histopathological lesions of erythema multiforme. Marked cardiovascular abnormalities including heart failure occurred concurrently and a dermatogenic enteropathy was also seen. Medical treatment resolved the dermatopathy and enteropathy but the heart failure progressed. A drug reaction was initially suspected to be the underlying cause with no neoplasia being detected, but repeat radiographs subsequently revealed a thymoma which had not been visible on the initial radiographs. The dermatopathy may have been a paraneop

Although there are various published studies on erythroderma from western and Asian countries, most of them have only included patients in the adult age groups. As we have an exclusively pediatric dermatology unit, we thought it would be intriguing to study the clinical, etiological and laboratory parameters of erythroderma in children. Seventeen erythroderma patients of both sexes were inducted into the study between 1993 to 1998. The mean age of onset was 3.3 years and the male:female ratio was 0.89:1. Eight (47%) of the patients were infants; 9 (53%) others belonged to the preschool and sch

INTRODUCTION: There are many clinical forms of bullous pemphigoid. Nodular, localised, vegetating, vesicular and dysidrosiform variants have been described. The appartenance to the spectrum of pemphigoid was confirmed by the demonstration of antibodies directed against the 230 and 180 kDa BP antigens. Three cases of erythrodermic pemphigoid were recently described.
OBSERVATIONS: We describe two cases of patients suffering from erythroderma for several months associated with a linear deposit of immunoglobulins and complement along the basement membrane. In the first observation, the patient su

The importance of accurate pathological diagnosis is emphasised in the case of a newborn infant who presented with alopecia, a generalised erythrodermatous skin eruption, and hepatosplenomegaly. She subsequently developed generalised lymphadenopathy and recurrent septicaemia and died aged 2 months. The histological findings of widespread lymphocytic, histiocytic, and eosinophilic tissue infiltration, associated with thymic hypoplasia, were consistent with autosomal recessive Omenn's disease.
