[Occupational diseases caused by chromium and its compounds].

The present paper demonstrates by documentary evidence occupational diseases caused by chromium and its compounds. Perforations of the nasal septum were diagnosed in 20 males and 9 females, the last one in 1980. Most of them worked in chromium-plating shops. Other diseases, including bronchial asthma, allergic rhinitis, and contact allergic eczemas, were examined in 1985-1999. Bronchial asthma was reported in a textile dyer who was in contact with chromium dyes for 32 years and two allergic rhinitides (a welder and an electroplater) were reported in 1987 as "other damage to health resulting fr

Airborne contact dermatitis from 2-amino-2-methyl-1-propanol in a cosmetic company.

The authors described two cases of airborne contact dermatitis caused by 2-amino-2-methyl-1-propanol (AMP 100) in two subjects with periorbital erythema and itching skin. The AMP 100 has been used to replace ammonia as a hair dye component in the cosmetic industry with the purpose to eliminate its smell. Patch tests proved positive only to dilutions of 10% and 20% in the two described patients, as well as in other six asymptomatic subjects operating in the same working environment. The authors have diagnosed an irritative airborne contact dermatitis by AMP 100.

[Contact allergy to fragrances].

BACKGROUND: The incidence of allergy induced by fragrances, leading mostly to the development of contact dermatitis and urticaria chronica, has been growing in a large number of countries. In general, allergy is of non-occupational nature, however, it can also have traits of occupational exposure. The fragrance mix is used in screening for allergy to aromas, but it frequently produces false positive or false negative results of the test. The aim of the study was to assess whether the fragrance mix is suitable for detecting allergy to aromas in persons with suspected occupational allergy and al

Patterns of Sensitization and Cross-Reactivity in Hair Dye Allergy: An 18-Year Tertiary-Center Experience from Greece.

Abstracts: Background: Hair dye-related allergic contact dermatitis (ACD) is a common problem among both consumers and professionals. The main sensitizers are aromatic amines such as para-phenylenediamine (PPD) and toluene-2,5-diamine (TDA), which can also cross-react with chemically related compounds. Objective: To analyze patch-test results from patients with suspected hair dye-related ACD, focusing on the prevalence of sensitization to hair dye allergens, cross-reactivity patterns, and occupational differences. Methods: We retrospectively reviewed 666 patients patch-tested between 2005 and 20

North American Contact Dermatitis Group Patch Test Results: 2017-2018.

BACKGROUND: Patch testing is an important diagnostic tool for assessment of allergic contact dermatitis (ACD). OBJECTIVE: This study documented the North American Contact Dermatitis Group (NACDG) patch testing results from March 1, 2017, to December 31, 2018. METHODS: At 14 centers in North America, patients with dermatitis were tested in a standardized manner with a screening series of 70 allergens and supplemental allergens as clinically indicated. Data were manually verified and entered into a central database. Descriptive statistics were estimated, and trends were analyzed using χ2 test.

'Eczema school' to improve compliance in an occupational dermatology clinic.

From the beginning of 1990 a trained nurse has been employed at our Department of Dermatology to give information about skin care, allergen avoidance and skin protection to the patients. To find out the possible benefit obtained by this patient education, a questionnaire was sent out to 540 patients who had been diagnosed with an occupational skin disease established at the Department of Dermatology between 1985 and 1992. It is evident that direct comparison in this kind of longitudinal follow-up must be carried out with great criticism, since changes in patients' work exposure and socioeconom

[Contact allergy to paraphenylenediamine: a 10-year observation held in the Nofer Institute of Occupational Medicine, Lódź].

BACKGROUND: Paraphenylenediamine (PPD), a major component of hair dye, usually induces non-occupational allergy in women. The aim of the present study was to investigate the prevalence of occupational and environmental sensitization to PPD over the last 10 years and to analyze the causes of this hypersensitivity. MATERIAL AND METHODS: Based on the medical records of 3224 patients (2153 women and 1071 men) examined in the Nofer Institute of Occupational Medicine in the years 1997-2006, the prevalence of PPD allergy was investigated. Moreover, the rate of PPD cross-reactions with N-isopropyl-N-

Parthenium dermatitis.

Parthenium hysterophorus and Tanacetum parthenium, members of the Compositae family, are important causes of allergic contact dermatitis due to plants. Parthenium dermatitis is a major problem in India and Australia. Parthenium hysterophorus causes a spectrum of clinical patterns. Parthenium dermatitis, in its classical form known as airborne contact dermatitis, primarily affects the exposed areas and the flexures. Other clinical patterns are a seborrheic pattern, widespread dermatitis, and exfoliative dermatitis. The trend of the clinical pattern is changing. The classic airborne contact derm

Several cases of work-related allergic contact dermatitis caused by isocyanates at a company manufacturing heat exchangers.

BACKGROUND: A 43-year-old woman was referred by her occupational health service with suspected occupational contact dermatitis. In connection with the investigation, a workplace visit was undertaken at her company, which used an adhesive based on pre-polymeric diphenylmethane diisocyanate in one of its units. During the visit, we became aware of six other employees with skin problems who were then referred to our department for investigation. OBJECTIVES: To investigate the seven employees complaining about skin problems. METHODS: Seven employees were patch tested with a baseline series, an i
