Background and Objectives: Impulse control disorders (ICDs) are frequent non-motor complications of Parkinson's disease (PD), usually related to dopaminergic therapy. Uric acid (UA) has been studied as a biomarker of PD severity and has been linked to impulsivity in non-PD populations. However, its association with ICDs in patients with PD (PwPs) has not been investigated. This study aimed to assess the relationship between serum UA levels, the uric acid to creatinine ratio (UA/Cr), and ICD prevalence in PwPs. Materials and Methods: We enrolled 172 PwPs hospitalized for follow-up or treatment

OBJECTIVE: This study aims to clinically evaluate the impulse control disorders (ICDs) encountered in treating Parkinson's disease.
METHOD: This is a retrospective analysis between 2010 and 2022. We retrieved the medical records of all patients diagnosed with idiopathic Parkinson's disease. The demographic and clinical findings were recorded. ICDs constituted a specific item in the examination, and each one (compulsive shopping, compulsive eating, pathological gambling, hypersexuality, punding, dopamine dysregulation syndrome, and hobbyism) was noted separately.
RESULTS: In the study period,

OBJECTIVE: To study the association between impulse control disorders (ICDs) in Parkinson's disease (PD) and genetic risk scores (GRS) for 40 known or putative risk factors (e.g. depression, personality traits).
BACKGROUND: In absence of published genome-wide association studies (GWAS), little is known about the genetics of ICDs in PD. GRS of related phenotypes, for which large GWAS are available, may help shed light on the genetic contributors of ICDs in PD.
METHODS: We searched for GWAS on European ancestry populations with summary statistics publicly available for a broad range of phenoty

OBJECTIVE: To assess emotional processing and alexithymia in patients with restless legs syndrome (RLS) with augmentation versus those who never had augmentation.
METHODS: We recruited 26 patients who had a history of augmentation (AUG), either current or past, 27 RLS patients treated with dopamine agonists who never had augmentation (RLS controls), and 21 healthy controls (HC). All participants were screened for impulse control disorders (ICDs). Alexithymia was assessed by means of the Toronto Alexithymia Scale - 20 (TAS-20). Facial emotion recognition was tested through an eye-tracking task

Clinicians are increasingly recognizing impulse control disorders (ICDs) as a complication of dopaminergic treatment in Parkinson's disease (PD). Considering the pivotal role of dopamine in reward information processing, ICDs may originate from dysregulation of reward-oriented behavior, and the behavioral changes may be reflected in shifts of psychological risk preference during decision-making. We used a behavioral economics paradigm to evaluate quantitatively the risk preferences of PD patients in levodopa on and off states. We also examined age-matched healthy controls. We found that levodo

BACKGROUND: Disorders of impulsivity are common, functionally impairing, and highly relevant across different clinical and research settings. Few structured clinical interviews for the identification and diagnosis of impulse control disorders exist, and none have been validated in a community sample in terms of psychometric properties.
METHODS: The Minnesota Impulse control disorders Interview (MIDI v2.0) was administered to an enriched sample of 293 non-treatment seeking adults aged 18-35 years, recruited using media advertisements in two large US cities. In addition to the MIDI, participant

INTRODUCTION: Previous studies have reported improvement of impulse control disorders (ICDs) after subthalamic nucleus (STN) deep brain stimulation (DBS) as well as some de novo ICDs. However, it is not clear how STN DBS changes ICDs in the long-term.
METHODS MATERIALS: Eighty-nine patients with Parkinson's disease (PD) who had received a bilateral STN DBS from 2005 to 2009 and were included in our previous study were followed for 7 years with the modified Minnesota Impulsive Disorders Interview (mMIDI). Their mMIDI scores, medication, and frontal function tests measured preoperatively and at

BACKGROUND: Impulse control disorders are frequently associated with dopaminergic therapy in Parkinson's disease. Genetic studies have suggested a high heritability of impulse control disorders in the general population and in PD. The aim of this study was to identify candidate gene variants associated with impulse control disorders and related behaviors in PD.
METHODS: We performed a multicenter case-control study in PD patients with (cases) or without impulse control disorders and related behaviors despite significant dopamine agonist exposure of >300 mg levodopa-equivalent daily dose durin

Lysosomal transport of cargos in neurons is essential for neuronal proteostasis, transmission and functional motors and behaviours. Lysosomal malfunction including storage disorders is involved in the pathogenesis of Parkinson's disease (PD). Given the unclear molecular mechanisms of diverse defects in PD phenotypes, especially behavioural deficits, this mini review explores the cellular contexts of PD impulse control disorders and the molecular aspects of lysosomal cross-membrane transports. Focuses are paid to trace metal involvements in α-synuclein assembly in Lewy bodies, the functions and

A computerized version of an assessment of Social-Emotional Information Processing (SEIP) using audio-video film stimuli instead of written narrative vignettes was developed for use in adult participants. This task allows for an assessment of encoding or relevant/irrelevant social-emotional information, attribution bias, and endorsement of appropriate, physically aggressive, and relationally aggressive responses to aversive social-emotional stimuli. The psychometric properties of this Video-SEIP (V-SEIP) assessment were examined in 75 healthy controls (HC) and in 75 individuals with DSM-5 Inte

In our TICS Review in 2004, we proposed that a sector of the right inferior frontal cortex (rIFC) in humans is critical for inhibiting response tendencies. Here we survey new evidence, discuss ongoing controversies, and provide an updated theory. We propose that the rIFC (along with one or more fronto-basal-ganglia networks) is best characterized as a brake. This brake can be turned on in different modes (totally, to outright suppress a response; or partially, to pause), and in different contexts (externally, by stop or salient signals; or internally, by goals). We affirm inhibition as a centr

Impulsive-compulsive disorders are frequent in patients with Parkinson's disease (PD). Recently, a screening questionnaire and rating scale were developed for these disorders: the questionnaire for impulsive-compulsive disorders (QUIP) and QUIP-rating scale (QUIP-RS). We assessed the validity of these instruments in the German language in order to reevaluate the benefit and to obtain German screening tools in clinical practice. A convenience sample of 156 patients was assessed in Kiel and Vienna. The patients filled out the QUIP-current, the QUIP-anytime and the QUIP-RS. We validated the quest

Detailed case reports have confirmed that the dopamine agonist rotigotine, marketed in transdermal patches, exposes patients to the risk of impulse control disorders, even at the doses recommended for restless legs syndrome. In most cases, the symptoms regressed after reducing the dose or discontinuing the drug.

BACKGROUND: Both impulse-control disorders and delusional jealousy (DJ) may be considered non-motor side-effects of dopamine agonist therapy in Parkinson's disease (PD). We aimed to investigate the possible concomitant development of these features in PD and their clinical correlates.
METHODS: We performed a cross-sectional investigation in 1063 consecutive PD patients with the Questionnaire for Impulsive Compulsive Disorders in Parkinson's disease and the Parkinson's Psychosis Questionnaire.
RESULTS: 81 patients presented ICDs (prevalence 7.61%) and 23 patients presented DJ (17 males, 6 fem

Parental bonding has been shown to have lasting impacts on the psychological development of children. Despite a growing body of research examining trauma as it relates to Intermittent Explosive Disorder (IED), no prior research has examined the relationship between parental bonding and IED. Six hundred fifty eight subjects were studied and categorized into one of three groups: Normal Control (no history of current or lifetime Axis I or Axis II disorder), Psychiatric Control (current and/or lifetime Axis I and/or Axis II disorders without IED), and IED (met current and/or lifetime criteria for

Impulse control disorders (ICDs) are frequent in Parkinson's disease (PD). Aim of the present study was to investigate cognition and behaviour in PD patients with and without ICDs, in order to identify potential early clinical features which might be associated to the development of ICDs. We recruited 17 PD patients with ICDs and 17 without ICDs, matched for several clinical variables, without clinically significant cognitive deficits. Assessments included behavioural scales and a neuropsychological battery, including the Iowa Gambling Task (IGT). In patients with ICDs, the total score of the

Impulse control disorders (ICDs), such as compulsive gambling, buying, sexual behavior, and eating, are a serious and increasingly recognized complication of dopamine replacement therapy in Parkinson's disease (PD). Other impulsive-compulsive behaviors have been linked to dopaminergic medications; these include punding (stereotyped, repetitive, purposeless behaviors) and dopamine dysregulation syndrome (DDS; compulsive medication overuse). ICDs have been most closely related to the use of dopamine agonists (DAs), particularly at higher dosages; in contrast, DDS is primarily associated with sho

Recent studies suggest that impulse control disorders (ICD) in Parkinson disease are not uncommon, and antiparkinsonian therapy, mainly the use of dopaminergic agonists, plays a causal role in the development of these symptoms. Pramipexole has been mainly related to the occurrence of ICDs, although these disorders may occur when any dopaminergic agonist-based therapy is administered. In this paper, we describe 4 patients with Parkinson disease and 1 with multisystem atrophy who presented a history (several months or years) of pathological gambling, hypersexuality, punding, and pathological use

Pathological gambling (PG) is defined by the DSM IV criteria as inappropriate, persistent, and maladaptive gambling behavior that has repercussions on family, personal, and professional life. It is classified as an impulse control disorder and is widely understood as a nonpharmacological addiction. PG has been reported as a complication in the treatment of Parkinson disease (PD). The prevalence of PG in PD has been reported to range between 1.7 and 7% compared to a prevalence of approximately 1% in the general population. Though there is no survey that indicates the prevalence of PG in Japanes

Numerous types of treatments for pathological gambling have been described, but two of the most common are Gamblers Anonymous (GA) and cognitive-behavioral therapy. This paper describes some outcome data associated with the two approaches. It also reviews evidence suggesting that a combined intervention may enhance therapy engagement and reduce relapse rates.
