Virtual patients and learning communication skills at "double speed": a qualitative study using the TPACK framework.

BACKGROUND: Effective communication is central to patient-centred care, but achieving sufficient practice opportunities with access to expert feedback during busy clinical placements can be challenging. Virtual Patients (VPs) simulate doctor-patient consultations and have been used successfully in medical education to teach communication skills. Four VPs were created with filmed patient encounters, using a branching decision format and scripted expert clinician feedback, to provide students with opportunities to practise challenging, infrequently seen, communication encounters. METHODS: One f

Navigating the Zimbabwean high school curriculum with assistive technology: Facilitators and barriers for learners with blindness.

Globally, learners with blindness face barriers to equitable curriculum access in mainstream education despite inclusion commitments. Zimbabwean mainstream high schools reflect these challenges, where learners with blindness encounter persistent obstacles to full participation. Centered on assistive technology, this study used criterion-based purposive sampling to recruit six self-selecting learners through resource units in three high schools across provinces, ensuring diverse perspectives. Grounded in Interpretive Phenomenological Analysis (IPA), the study examined facilitators and barriers

Complementary role of governments, non-governmental organizations, industry, and medical societies in expanding bradycardia therapy access.

As the aging population continues to grow, so has the incidence of cardiovascular diseases, including bradycardia, with much of the burden falling on low- and middle-income countries (LMICs). Pacemaker therapy remains the only guideline-recommended therapy for symptomatic bradycardia, but due to the cost and expertise required for pacemaker implants, patients in LMICs have less access to pacemaker therapies. However, with the concerted effort of organizations (governments, non-governmental organizations, industry, and medical societies) strides can continue to be made in improving access to ca

The Application of Low-fidelity Chest Tube Insertion Using Remote Telesimulation in Training Healthcare Professionals.

Healthcare professionals practicing in rural, remote, or resource-restricted areas have little opportunity to practice "high stakes low-frequency" clinical procedures, despite having higher rates of injury-related death than city inhabitants. Availability of clinical skills instructors, the expense of practicing skills, lack of educational sessions, and distance to simulation centres can be a barrier to teaching and skill maintenance, particularly in rural settings. Telesimulation has the potential to overcome these challenges using audio-visual technology to connect rural learners with instru

Management of acute traumatic spinal cord injuries.

Acute traumatic spinal cord injury (SCI) is a devastating disease process affecting tens of thousands of people across the USA each year. Despite the increase in primary prevention measures, such as educational programs, motor vehicle speed limits, automobile running lights, and safety technology that includes automobile passive restraint systems and airbags, SCIs continue to carry substantial permanent morbidity and mortality. Medical measures implemented following the initial injury are designed to limit secondary insult to the spinal cord and to stabilize the spinal column in an attempt to

Closed loop insulin delivery in diabetes.

The primary goal of type 1 diabetes treatment is attaining near-normal glucose values. This currently remains out of reach for most people with type 1 diabetes despite intensified insulin treatment in the form of insulin analogues, educational interventions, continuous glucose monitoring, and sensor augmented insulin pump. The main remaining problem is risk of hypoglycaemia, which cannot be sufficiently reduced in all patient groups. Additionally, patients' burn-out often develops with years of tedious day-to-day diabetes management, rendering available diabetes-related technology less efficie
