Elbow Metastasis From Primary Lung Adenocarcinoma: A Case Report.

BACKGROUND: Lung cancer is a leading cause of cancer-related death worldwide, with bone metastasis frequently seen in advanced stages and often located in the axial skeleton or proximal long bones. Metastasis to the elbow is extremely rare and poses diagnostic and therapeutic challenges. CASE PRESENTATION: We report the case of a 39-year-old male with a history of smoking and recent occupational exposure, presenting with an 8-month history of progressive pain, swelling, and limited mobility in the left elbow. Imaging revealed an osteolytic lesion in the distal humerus, prompting further evalu…

Return to Sport Following Elbow Dislocation: A Systematic Review.

BACKGROUND: Elbow dislocation is the second most common large joint dislocation in athletes, frequently occurring in contact and high-impact sports such as football, wrestling, and gymnastics. While these injuries typically result from a fall onto an outstretched hand with the elbow in near full extension, both nonoperative and surgical treatments have demonstrated high success rates in restoring elbow function, enabling athletes to return to sport (RTS) with favorable functional outcomes. PURPOSE/HYPOTHESIS: The purpose of this systematic review was to evaluate RTS rate, time to return, and …

Arthroscopic Treatment for Elbow Trauma: Learning Curve and Outcomes.

Arthroscopic treatment of elbow trauma has advantages such as the enhanced view of the elbow, including joint surfaces and soft tissue. Arthroscopy provides an accurate evaluation of chondral lesions and osteochondral loose fragments. A clear advantage is the minimally invasive nature of arthroscopy, decreasing soft tissue injury compared to open techniques. There are several challenges such as patient positioning, soft tissue status, and hemarthrosis. Arthroscopic-assisted treatment of trauma is performed safely earlier in the learning curve, but published literature has shown that the arthro…

[Support algorithm for lateral elbow pain syndrome in adults].

Lateral elbow pain syndrome in adults is a frequent complaint leading to consultation in primary care medicine. The lateral side of the elbow joint represents a complex anatomy with close proximity of bony structures (humerus, radius, and ulna), ligaments (lateral ligament complex), tendons (origin of the extensors of the wrist and fingers), and nerves (branches of the radial nerve) making diagnostic and therapeutic management demanding. This article aims to provide a basis for reflection to better define treatment options for pathologies frequently encountered in clinical practice.

Current concepts: pathology in the overhead athlete's lateral elbow.

The lateral elbow is subjected to increasing compressive force in response to repetitive valgus stress. Alterations or deficiencies in overhead mechanics and the kinetic chain may predispose an athlete to injury. Evaluation includes a focused elbow physical examination and imaging, supplemented by a robust screening of core strength, balance, and mechanics of the kinetic chain. Treatment of osteochondritis dissecans, a common lateral elbow pathology, varies based on stability of the lesion, with variable, but often positive outcomes. Proper pitching mechanics, kinetic chain integrity, and work…

Effect of elbow carrying angle on lateral epicondylitis development.

Lateral epicondylitis is one of the most common elbow joint injuries and elbow anatomy is a risk factor. Our study aims to evaluate whether the elbow carrying angle affects the development of lateral epicondylitis by considering sex differences. Elbow radiographs of 211 people (aged 18-65 years) diagnosed with lateral epicondylitis and having anteroposterior radiographs of the elbow taken in the appropriate position in the imaging archive of our hospital between January 1, 2021 and January 1, 2022 were retrospectively analyzed. The control group comprised elbow radiographs of 113 people in the…

Elbow Trauma: An Evidence-Based Approach to Improving Outcomes.

The management of elbow fractures remains difficult and controversial. The failure rate of surgical intervention in elbow fractures remains higher than that seen with other fractures, and there remains significant room for improvement in the care of these injuries. Evidence-based management strategies for elbow fractures and how to prevent and manage complications following elbow fracture surgery have been described.

REVIEW OF ARTICULATED ELBOW ORTHOTICS FOR JOINT STIFFNESS REHABILITATION.

UNLABELLED: Joint stiffness is the most common complication in elbow injuries, presenting several etiologies and pathophysiological mechanisms that hinder treatment and prognosis. Prevention and treatment of joint contracture depend on the cause of stiffness, and early intervention should modify its outcomes. The methods used may be conservative or surgical, alone or in combination, according to each individual situation. OBJECTIVE: Review articles on articulated elbow orthosis for joint stiffness rehabilitation. METHODS: A literature review was conducted in journals available at the PubMed,…

[Augmented primary sutures "internal bracing" following ligamentous elbow dislocation].

OBJECTIVE: Aim of surgical treatment is the primary stabilization of the unstable elbow following a ligamentous elbow dislocation. INDICATIONS: Ligamentous elbow dislocations are typically accompanied by injuries to the surrounding musculature and collateral ligaments of the elbow joint. Surgical treatment is indicated in case of failure of nonoperative therapy, i.e., when a dislocation can only be prevented in immobilization > 90° and pronation of the elbow or an active muscular centering of the elbow fails after 5-7 days. CONTRAINDICATIONS: Contraindications for a solely "internal bracing"…

Outcomes of radial head implants in total elbow arthroplasty.

BACKGROUND: There is no consensus on the management of the radial head in total elbow arthroplasty (TEA). In 3-part TEA designs, options include radial head retention, excision, or arthroplasty. Biomechanical studies suggest improved varus-valgus stability with radial head implants in unlinked total elbows. Unfortunately, complications with radial head implants have been common with historical designs. The aim of this study was to evaluate the clinical and radiographic outcomes of radial head implants in a current 3-part TEA and identify risk factors for mechanical failure. METHODS: We perfor…
