The vitamin D and K deficiency was studied for its effect on creatine kinase, phosphorylase and alkaline phosphatase activity of rat kidneys and intestinal mucosa. The results show that creatine kinase and phosphorylase activity of kidneys varies depending on the content of these vitamins, e.g. it is activated with vitamin D depletion irrespective of the vitamin K status and remains unchanged with the deficiency of vitamin K alone. Exocrine pancreatic enzyme activities and mineral concentrations were measured in a newly developed congenic strain of corpulent rat (SHR/N-cp). Approximately 4- to 5-wk-old corpulent (cp/cp) and lean (+/?) male rats consumed a diet containing 54% carbohydrate as either cooked cornstarch or 27% cooked cornstarch and 27% fructose for 9.5 mo. The aim of the investigation was to study alpha-D-mannosidase activity in samples of whole, parotid and submandibular saliva and the rate of production of alpha-D-mannosidases by parotid and submandibular glands. alpha-D-mannosidase activity was determined spectrophotometrically and spectrofluorimetrically. alpha-D-mannosidase activity was found at three different pH optima in whole saliva, around pH 4.8, 6.1 and 6.9. Chronic thiamine deprivation in the rat leads to ataxia, loss of righting reflex and neuropathological damage to lateral vestibular nucleus.
