The chemical bases of the various AIDS epidemics: recreational drugs, anti-viral chemotherapy and malnutrition.

In 1981 a new epidemic of about two-dozen heterogeneous diseases began to strike non-randomly growing numbers of male homosexuals and mostly … roposed that a virus, now termed human immunodeficiency virus (HIV), is the cause of the non-random epidemics of the US and Europe but also of a new, sexually random epidemic in Africa. The virus-AIDS hypothesis was instantly accepted, but it is burdened with numerous paradoxes, none of which could be resolved by 2003: Why is there no HIV in most AIDS patie …

A critical review of control strategies against meningococcal meningitis epidemics in sub-Saharan African countries.

The control strategy of meningitis epidemics in sub-Saharan countries, although reexamined regularly, is based on epidemiological, immunological and logistical considerations put forward at the end of the 1970s. It comprises organizing large-scale vaccinations in the event of a declared epidemic. The obvious failure of this strategy recommended by the World Health Organization (WHO) necessitates evaluation of the emergency vaccination criteria. Despite current controversy on the immunogenicity of the polysaccharide vaccine, its safety, effectiveness in the field and low cost could justify the …

Sexualization of the female foot as a response to sexually transmitted epidemics: a preliminary study.

The authors reviewed historical literature and hypothesized a relationship between epidemics of sexually transmitted diseases and foot fetishism. They tested this hypothesis by quantifying foot-fetish depictions in the mass-circulation pornographic literature during a 30-yr. interval. An exponential increase was noted during the period of the current AIDS epidemic. The authors offer reasons for this possible relationship.

[How the epidemics of typhus and relapsing fever were stopped in Serbia in 1915 year].

Eighty years are passed after the catastrophic epidemics of Typhus and Relapsing Fever in 1915 in Serbia was stopped and put under control. This remarkable achievment was realized in cooperation of the British Military Mission and Serbian health services, one month before the usual seasonal maximum of epidemic wave. The cutting of epidemics was made possible by introducing famous "Serbian barrel" (constructed by Dr Stammers). However, the epidemics of Typhus fever present in the same time in several european countries lasted throughout the whole First World War.

[Mosquito caused death: the yellow fever epidemics in San Juan of Puerto Rico 1804-1805].

At the end of the eighteenth and beginning of the nineteenth centuries, yellow fever epidemics occurred frequently in America and Europe, in the vicinity of the Mediterranean, Atlantic, and Caribbean coasts. There is only brief information available on the 1804-5 epidemic in San Juan, but it shows that mortality in the city was inordinate. Nevertheless, the minutes of the meetings of the Municipal Assembly in this period make no mention of the epidemic, and allude to it only in veiled fashion. In spite of the accumulation of individual tragedies (for example, it is likely that the two daughter…

The neuro-metabolic epidemic and the CB1R paradox.

Obesity, metabolic syndrome, and neurodegenerative diseases are rising together, posing a public health issue. Alzheimer's disease, often referred to as "type-3 diabetes," shows how metabolic dysfunction can drive cognitive decline through disrupting brain insulin signaling, glucose metabolism, and causing inflammation. The endocannabinoid system, especially the CB1 receptor, plays a key role. While CB1R physiologically regulates energy homeostasis, chronic overnutrition leads to its pathological overactivation. Although CB1R antagonists showed strong efficacy in animal and early clinical stud

Epidemic dynamics on temporal complex networks.

A wide range of real-world systems, ranging from physical and biological systems to social systems, can be described as temporal networks, where link temporality has profound effects on many dynamical processes taking place on networks. Here we study the susceptible-infected-susceptible model on temporal complex networks, where edges are randomly activated or terminated at each time step. We analytically obtain the epidemic threshold for temporal complex networks with arbitrary initial degree distributions. The approximate endemic equilibrium prevalence for temporal complex networks with arbit

Eosinophilic gastrointestinal disorders, a new epidemic.

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: Eosinophilic gastrointestinal disorders (EGID) are on the rise and impose a significant burden on patients. EGID other than eosinophilic esophagitis (EoE) remain diagnostically and therapeutically challenging. RECENT FINDINGS: We revised the current knowledge on primary EGID. Epithelial barrier dysfunction and type 2 inflammation are key elements in EoE pathogenesis, whereas the mechanisms underlying distal EGID are elusive. Clinical presentations of EGID vary by disease location and depth of tissue involvement. Diagnosis relies on biopsy, although eosinophilic histologic t

Bayesian changepoint detection for epidemic models.

This paper demonstrates how Bayesian stochastic filtering techniques can be used to detect changepoints in the transmission rate, as well as identify the rate itself, in the spread of disease using the susceptible-infectious-recovered (SIR) model. To better model real-world scenarios, a stochastic SIR model is considered where the transmission rate is unknown a priori, the number of people moving between compartments is perturbed by additional randomness, and the rate changes at unknown points in time. Changepoints can be used to model disruptions in disease spread, such as those caused by pub

Mpox: Global epidemic situation and countermeasures.

Mpox, is a zoonotic disease caused by the monkeypox virus and is primarily endemic to Africa. As countries gradually stop smallpox vaccination, resistance to the smallpox virus is declining, increasing the risk of infection with mpox and other viruses. On 14 August 2024, the World Health Organization announced that the spread of mpox constituted a public health emergency of international concern. Mpox's transmission routes and symptoms are complex and pose new challenges to global health. Several vaccines (such as ACAM2000, JYNNEOS, LC16m8, and genetically engineered vaccines) and antiviral dr

Is HIV epidemic control by 2030 realistic?

Rates of new HIV acquisition remain unacceptably high in most populations in low-income, middle-income, and high-income settings despite adv … rio to produce a population-level impact on HIV incidence, especially in countries with generalised epidemics. Current global efforts are not sufficient to meet 2030 HIV epidemic goals; acknowledgment of this issue is required to ensure persistent advocacy for population-based control of the ongoing HIV pandemic.

Phylodynamic Structure in the Botswana HIV Epidemic.

BACKGROUND: Studying viral sequences can provide insights into the structure of host contact networks through which the virus is transmitted. Uncovering the population structure of the HIV-1 epidemic in Botswana will help optimise public health interventions and may identify hidden sub-epidemics. We sought to determine the phylodynamic structure of the Botswana HIV-1 epidemic from viral sequence genetic data. METHODS: The Botswana Combination Prevention Project (BCPP) randomly sampled 20% of households in 30 villages in Botswana between 2013-2018 and tested for HIV-1. Extensive demographic da…
