Structural and practical identifiability of an immuno-hand foot and mouth disease model integrating immune response within a host.

In this work, we extend the nested modeling framework to establish an immuno-epidemiological model for Hand Foot and Mouth Disease (HFMD). This model intricately links host-to-host transmission, virus release, and recovery rates to within-host immune system dynamics. We introduce an ordinary differential equation (ODE)-based within-host model and an partial differential equation (PDE)-based between-host model. Utilizing sensitivity-based locally structural identifiability methods, including principal component analysis (PCA) and eigenvalue analysis, we systematically prioritize parameters from

Epidemiology and moral philosophy.

To an increasing extent ethical controversies affect and sometimes obstruct public health work and epidemiological research. In order to improve communication between the concerned parties a model for identification and analysis of ethical conflicts in individual-based research has been worked out in co-operation between epidemiologists and moral philosophers. The model has two dimensions. One dimension specifies relevant ethical principles (as beneficence, non-maleficence, autonomy and justice). The other dimension specifies the groups of persons involved in the conflict under consideration (

Predicting Long-Term Childhood Survival of Newborns with Congenital Heart Defects: A Population-Based, Prospective Cohort Study (EPICARD).

Backgroud: Congenital heart defects (CHDs) are the most frequent group of major congenital anomalies, accounting for almost 1% of all births. They comprise a very heterogeneous group of birth defects in terms of their severity, clinical management, epidemiology, and embryologic origins. Taking this heterogeneity into account is an important imperative to provide reliable prognostic information to patients and their caregivers, as well as to compare results between centers or to assess alternative diagnostic and treatment strategies. The Anatomic and Clinical Classification of CHD (ACC-CHD) aim

Chronic Low-Dose Exposure to Xenoestrogen Ambient Air Pollutants and Breast Cancer Risk: XENAIR Protocol for a Case-Control Study Nested Within the French E3N Cohort.

BACKGROUND: Breast cancer is the most frequent cancer in women in industrialized countries. Lifestyle and environmental factors, particularly endocrine-disrupting pollutants, have been suggested to play a role in breast cancer risk. Current epidemiological studies, although not fully consistent, suggest a positive association of breast cancer risk with exposure to several International Agency for Research on Cancer Group 1 air-pollutant carcinogens, such as particulate matter, polychlorinated biphenyls (PCB), dioxins, Benzo[a]pyrene (BaP), and cadmium. However, epidemiological studies remain s

Predictive triage for testing may improve control of a COVID-19 epidemic while reducing testing requirements.

BACKGROUND: Extensive population testing played a crucial role in mitigating the COVID-19 pandemic. However, scaling up testing capacity requires a considerable workforce and infrastructure. Furthermore, sampling and testing delays can hinder timely interventions. We therefore sought to improve pre-test triage through an ensemble model based on self-reported information. METHODS: We trained an XGBoost classifier to predict individual risk of COVID-19 infection for higher education students in Leuven (Belgium) from real-world social and health data related to 38,180 test results. The model cou

Epidemiological landscape and clinical heterogeneity of primary pancreatic lymphoma: a population-based study.

BACKGROUND: Epidemiological and clinical characteristics of primary pancreatic lymphoma (PPL) have been rarely reported in the literature. This study aimed to characterize the epidemiological features of PPL and develop robust nomograms for predicting patient survival outcomes. METHODS: Patients diagnosed with PPL were extracted from the Surveillance, Epidemiology, and End Results (SEER) database for the period 1983-2015. Incidence rates of PPL were calculated for 1975-2018, and temporal trends were assessed using Joinpoint regression analysis. Cox proportional hazards regression models were

Incidence trends and projections of lip and oral cavity cancer in China 1990-2021: an age-period-cohort and decomposition analysis.

OBJECTIVE: To investigate the historical trends, underlying causes, and future projections of lip and oral cavity cancer (LOCC) incidence in China. METHODS: Annual cases and age-standardized incidence rates (ASIR) for LOCC in China from 1990 to 2021 were extracted from the Global Burden of Disease (GBD) 2021 study. Age-Period-Cohort (APC) models were employed to assess the effects of age, period, and cohort. Bayesian APC models were applied to project future incidence trends, and decomposition analysis was conducted to identify factors influencing incidence. RESULT: From 1990 to 2021, the ca

However, a representation of wastewater surveillance has not yet been incorporated into epidemiological models for college campuses, nor has the efficacy of wastewater screening been evaluated relative to traditional individual surveillance testing, within the structure of these models. Here, we implement a new model component for wastewater surveillance wit …

An international evaluation of the cancer preventive potential of carotenoids.

The IARC convened a Working Group of experts in December 1997 to evaluate the cancer-preventive potential of carotenoids and to compile the second volume of the IARC Handbooks of Cancer Prevention. In observational epidemiological studies, beta-carotene is associated with reduced risks for cancer at many but not all sites. It is unclear, however, to what extent beta-carotene itself is responsible for the decreased risks observed. Three large, randomized, placebo-controlled clinical trials indicate, however, that, in substantial doses, supplementation with beta-carotene not only does not preven

Spatial and temporal determinants of A-weighted and frequency specific sound levels-An elastic net approach.

BACKGROUND: Urban sound levels are a ubiquitous environmental stressor and have been shown to be associated with a wide variety of health outcomes. While much is known about the predictors of A-weighted sound pressure levels in the urban environment, far less is known about other frequencies. OBJECTIVE: To develop a series of spatial-temporal sound models to predict A-weighted sound pressure levels, low, mid, and high frequency sound for Boston, Massachusetts. METHODS: Short-term sound levels were gathered at n = 400 sites from February 2015 - February 2016. Spatial and meteorological attrib

Development of Dose-Response Models to Predict the Relationship for Human Toxoplasma gondii Infection Associated with Meat Consumption.

Toxoplasma gondii is a protozoan parasite that is responsible for approximately 24% of deaths attributed to foodborne pathogens in the United States. It is thought that a substantial portion of human T. gondii infections is acquired through the consumption of meats. The dose-response relationship for human exposures to T. gondii-infected meat is unknown because no human data are available. The goal of this study was to develop and validate dose-response models based on animal studies, and to compute scaling factors so that animal-derived models can predict T. gondii infection in humans. Releva

Optimizing Spatio-Temporal Allocation of the COVID-19 Vaccine Under Different Epidemiological Landscapes.

An efficient and safe vaccine is expected to allow people to return to normal life as soon as possible. However, vaccines for new diseases are likely to be in short supply during the initial deployment due to narrow production capacity and logistics. There is an urgent need to optimize the allocation of limited vaccines to improve the population effectiveness of vaccination. Existing studies mostly address a single epidemiological landscape. The robustness of the effectiveness of other proposed strategies is difficult to guarantee under other landscapes. In this study, a novel vaccination allo

The consequences of host heterogeneity for parasite transmission depend on how host infectiousness is determined.

Host heterogeneities in susceptibility and infectiousness can affect parasite transmission, but standard analyses typically consider a limited range of epidemiological scenarios. We propose two contrasting phenomenological scenarios that capture a wide range of processes by which host infectiousness is determined and explore how these scenarios affect the impact of host heterogeneities on parasite transmission. Specifically, we contrast two limiting cases for how host infectiousness may be determined: 'Recipient dependence' (RD), where a host's infectiousness is a fixed characteristic of the r

From exposure to infection: mechanisms linking emerging pollutants to increased viral susceptibility.

Emerging pollutants (EPs) - including microplastics (MPs), nanoplastics (NPs), pesticides, antibiotics (ABX), particulate matter (PM), and heavy metals (HMs) - are pervasive environmental contaminants increasingly recognized as critical non-infectious co-factors in viral pathogenesis. While epidemiological evidence links chronic environmental exposure to EPs with heightened respiratory viral morbidity, the biological plausibility and cellular trajectories driving this susceptibility remain incompletely defined. This review synthesizes current epidemiological, toxicological, and immunological i

The South African National Blood Service (SANBS): A new member of the World Apheresis Association.

The South African National Blood Service (SANBS) is a non-profit, vein-to-vein transfusion organisation serving approximately 56 million people across eight of South Africa's nine provinces. SANBS has evolved into one of the most comprehensive blood services on the African continent. Operating within a uniquely challenging epidemiological and socioeconomic milieu-characterised by the world's highest HIV prevalence among persons aged 15-49 years (approximately 19.1%) and a Gini coefficient of 0.63, reflecting extreme income inequality-SANBS has developed innovative service delivery models to en

Urinary neonicotinoid exposure and NAFLD in U.S. adults: The non-monotonic association of 5-hydroxyimidacloprid predominantly in males.

Environmental exposure to neonicotinoids (NEOs) is ubiquitous, yet epidemiological evidence linking them to non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) remains hindered by diagnostic limitations and linear modeling assumptions. This study analyzed 1281 adults from the NHANES 2017-2018 cycle, utilizing Vibration-Controlled Transient Elastography (VCTE) to objectively quantify hepatic steatosis. Through mutually adjusted multi-pollutant models, restricted cubic splines (RCS), and piecewise parallel mediation analyses, we evaluated the associations between five urinary NEO biomarkers and liver outc

Syndemic convergence of mpox and HIV crisis in the Philippines: implications for integrated and responsive public health action.

The Philippines stands at a critical juncture in its public health trajectory, confronting concurrent challenges of a rapidly growing HIV epidemic and the re-emergence of mpox, both of which contribute to a rising burden of disease among vulnerable populations. This article examines the emerging syndemic potential of HIV and mpox in the Philippine context, emphasizing how their convergence magnifies existing health disparities and exposes deep-rooted systemic issues. Recent epidemiological trends reveal critical shortcomings in surveillance, early detection, preventive outreach, and equitable

Temporal dynamics of tuberculosis incidence in Piauí, northeast Brazil, 2010-2024: a time-series and decomposition analysis.

BACKGROUND: Tuberculosis (TB) remains a major public health challenge in Brazil, characterised by marked regional heterogeneity. This study aimed to analyse the temporal dynamics of TB in a state of northeast Brazil. METHODS: This was an ecological time-series study using official TB surveillance data on newly reported TB cases from 2010 to 2024. Age-standardised incidence rates (ASIRs) were analysed through seasonal-trend decomposition by Loess (STL) and Joinpoint regression models. Furthermore, the rates were decomposed to quantify the contributions of population ageing, population growth a
