Topographical EEG Recordings of Visual Evoked Potentials in Mice using Multichannel Thin-film Electrodes.

Visual evoked potentials (VEP) allow the characterization of visual function in preclinical mouse models. Various methods exist to measure VEPs in mice, from non-invasive EEG, subcutaneous single-electrodes, and ECoG to fully invasive intracortical multichannel visual cortex recordings. It can be useful to acquire a global, topographical EEG-level characterization of visual responses previous to local intracortical microelectrode measurements in acute experimental settings. For example, one use case is to assess global cross-modal changes in VEP topography in deafness models before studying it…

Distinct Vestibular Evoked Myogenic Potentials in Patients With Parkinson Disease and Progressive Supranuclear Palsy.

Background: Early brainstem neurodegeneration is common in Parkinson's disease (PD) and progressive supranuclear palsy (PSP). While previous work showed abnormalities in vestibular evoked myogenic potentials (VEMPs) in patients with either disorder as compared to healthy humans, it remains unclear whether ocular and cervical VEMPs differ between PD and PSP patients. Methods: We prospectively included 12 PD and 11 PSP patients, performed ocular and cervical VEMPs, and calculated specific VEMP scores (0 = normal, 12 = most pathological) based on latencies, amplitude, and absent responses. In add

Pattern-onset and OFFset visual evoked potentials in the diagnosis of hemianopic field defects.

BACKGROUND: Visual evoked potentials (VEPs) assess the function of the visual pathway from the retina to the primary visual cortex. There is much evidence that monocular pattern-reversal and flash VEPs can distinguish dysfunction due to chiasmal and post-chiasmal afferent pathway lesions. There is less evidence about the use of pattern-onset/OFFset VEPs to identify post-chiasmic dysfunction. METHODS: We present nine patients with a range of visual pathway defects that caused dense hemianopic field defects. These patients had pattern onset-OFFset VEPs recorded from an array of occipital electr…

Central and peripheral steady-state visual evoked potentials in children with optic pathway gliomas.

PURPOSE: Treatment of optic pathway gliomas is prompted by neuroradiological evidence of tumor growth, usually associated with progressive visual loss. Despite therapy, approximately 40% will show visual deterioration. Treatment outcome is largely based on the preservation of vision. However, current visual function assessment is often unreliable in children with optic pathway gliomas who have limited collaboration. Thus, there is a need for new clinical tools to evaluate visual functions in these children. The aim of the study was to assess the value of steady-state visual evoked potentials a…

Intersession Variations in Frequency Tuning of Ocular Vestibular Evoked Myogenic Potentials in Healthy Individuals.

Objective Frequency tuning of ocular vestibular evoked myogenic potential (oVEMP), which is the stimulus frequency corresponding to the largest oVEMP amplitude, has been used to diagnose cases with Ménière's disease and differentiate them from cases with benign paroxysmal positional vertigo with a high degree of sensitivity and specificity. However, this measure of oVEMP is carved out of the peak-to-peak amplitude of oVEMP, and studies on test-retest reliability of amplitude of oVEMP have shown moderate-to-excellent reliability of amplitude. This would theoretically render the frequency tuning

Test-Retest Reliability of Dual-Recorded Brainstem versus Cortical Auditory-Evoked Potentials to Speech.

BACKGROUND: Auditory-evoked potentials have proven useful in the objective evaluation of sound encoding at different stages of the auditory pathway (brainstem and cortex). Yet, their utility for use in clinical assessment and empirical research relies critically on the precision and test-retest repeatability of the measure. PURPOSE: To determine how subcortical/cortical classes of auditory neural responses directly compare in terms of their internal consistency and test-retest reliability within and between listeners. RESEARCH DESIGN: A descriptive cohort study describing the dispersion of e…

Action-associated modulation of visual event-related potentials evoked by abstract and ecological stimuli.

This study investigated the influence of action-associated predictive processes on visual ERPs. In two experiments, we sought evidence for sensory attenuation (SA) indexed by ERP amplitude reductions for self-induced stimuli when compared to passive viewing of the same images. We assessed if SA is (a) present for both ecological and abstract stimuli (pictures depicting hands or checkerboards), (b) modulated by the degree of stimulus predictability (certain or uncertain action-effect contingencies), and (c) sensitive to laterality of hand movements (dominant or subdominant hand actions). We fou

Giant early components of somatosensory evoked potentials to tibial nerve stimulation in cortical myoclonus.

Enlarged cortical components of somatosensory evoked potentials (giant SEPs) recorded by electroencephalography (EEG) and abnormal somatosensory evoked magnetic fields (SEFs) recorded by magnetoencephalography (MEG) are observed in the majority of patients with cortical myoclonus (CM). Studies on simultaneous recordings of SEPs and SEFs showed that generator mechanism of giant SEPs involves both primary sensory and motor cortices. However the generator sources of giant SEPs have not been fully understood as only one report describes clearly giant SEPs following lower limb stimulation. In our s…
