Juvenile dermatomyositis is an autoimmune connective tissue disease occurring in children less than 16 years old. It is part of a heterogeneous group of muscle diseases called idiopathic Iiflammatory myopathies. It had previously been reported in black Africans resident in UK. However, there is no documented case reported from Africa. The index sign of heliotrope rashes is often difficult to visualise in the black skin. An 11-year-old Nigerian girl presenting with clinical, laboratory and histopathological features of juvenile dermatomyositis is presented here. It is hoped that this case will

We report an unusual case of Guillain-Barre syndrome in a 36-year old gentleman, diagnosed based on clinical presentation, CSF analysis and nerve study tests findings, who presented to our department for elective cystoscopy and discovered at the day of surgery to have macular skin rash over the trunk and upper limbs, surgery was postponed. Then and after 12 hours he started to develop the classical manifestations of Guillain-Barre syndrome. Asymptomatic skin rash should carefully be investigated as it could be an early presentation of a serious condition.

BACKGROUND: Drug reactions are a common cause of rashes and can vary from brief, mildly annoying, self limiting rashes to severe conditions involving multiple organ systems.
OBJECTIVE: This article outlines an approach to exanthems that may be related to drug reactions and details appropriate management.
DISCUSSION: Rashes related to drug reactions are both nonallergic and allergic. Nonallergic rashes are usually predictable and may be avoidable. Allergic rashes include morbilliform erythema, urticaria and angioedema, erythema multiforme and vasculitic rashes. The vast majority of cases are

We present a case of a cat-scratch disease (CSD) presenting with typical (primary lesion and regional lymphadenitis) and rare (purulent lymphadenitis and maculopapular rash) symptoms and positive epidemiological data. Laboratory blood test showed normal values for routine parameters, except for mild leukocytosis (L 12.4 x 10(9)), elevated erythrocyte sedimentation rate (SE 65/h) and moderately elevated asparta e-aminotransferase and alanine-aminotransferase values (AST/ALT 48/90), fibrinogen (5.3 g/L) and C-reactive protein (CRP 85 mg/L). Cytological analysis of lymph node content revealed gra

Drug rash with eosinophilia and systemic symptoms (DRESS) syndrome is an adverse drug reaction most commonly associated with aromatic antiepileptic agents. It is characterized by the triad of skin eruption, fever, and systemic involvement, with the latter usually manifesting as hepatitis and lymphadenopathy. Mortality is primarily due to hepatic failure and can be as high as 10%. Formerly referred to by names such as Dilantin hypersensitivity syndrome and anticonvulsant hypersensitivity syndrome, DRESS syndrome is a more precise term since this reaction pattern can be seen with other agents. OBJECTIVE: To assess the clinical, pathologic, and epidemiologic features of asymmetric periflexural exanthem of childhood (APEC), a clinically distinctive eruption, especially its link with pityriasis rosea and pattern of transmission.
DESIGN: A prospective case series, including an analysis of epidemiologic triggering factors and mode of transmission. Pathologic study, including immunohistochemistry of the inflammatory infiltrate.
SETTING: A mixed, community-based referral center.
PATIENTS: A total of 37 girls and 30 boys with typical APEC referred from April 1994 to December 1996 were in

Exanthem is defined as multiple, inflammatory skin alteration with a hematogenic, lymphogenic or neurogenic origin. Typically, so called exanthematic children's diseases are measles, mumps, rubella, varicella, erythema infectiosum (fifth disease) and in the past small pox. The pathogenesis of the viral-caused diseases primarily occurs in the vascular connective tissue. The cytopathogenetic effects result in inflammatory tissue reactions with activation of defence mechanism and producing of immune complexes. First symptoms are hyperemia, edema and inflammatory infiltrates with itchy swellings. …

The newly isolated virus, human herpesvirus 6 (HHV-6), causes exanthem subitum (or roseola infantum) as the primary infection. Liver dysfunction and neurological disorders are observed during exanthem subitum. Seroepidemiological studies have shown that almost all children are infected with HHV-6 about 6-24 months after birth. This virus also causes other diseases including lymphadenitis and infectious mononucleosis-like disease. HHV-6 has cellular tropism for CD4+ lymphocytes, in which it replicates in vivo. Its transmission is probably airborne early in life, mainly from mother to child, bec

Carbamazepine (CBZ) can produce serious side-effects such as hepatitis, LES, agranulocytosis, aplastic anaemia and skin eruptions. The latter, of polymorphous appearance (morbilliform, orticorioid and vesicular) depend on the levels of CBZ and retreat rapidly with the administration of prednisone. 2 cases of rash following introduction of the drug quickly resolved with its suspension are reported.
