High paternal testosterone may protect against postpartum depressive symptoms in fathers, but confer risk to mothers and children.

Following the birth of an infant, decreases in testosterone and increases in depressive symptoms have been observed in fathers. Paternal testosterone may reflect fathers' investment in pair-bonding and paternal caregiving and, as such, may be associated with maternal and familial well-being. This study tests associations between paternal testosterone, paternal and maternal postpartum depressive symptoms, and subsequent family functioning. Within 149 couples, fathers provided testosterone samples when infants were approximately nine months old and both parents reported on postpartum depressive

Family enhancement of cognitive style in anxious and aggressive children.

Previous research has shown that anxious adults provide more threat interpretations of ambiguous stimuli than other clinic and nonclinic persons. We were interested in investigating if the same bias occurs in anxious children and how family processes impact on these children's interpretations of ambiguity. Anxious, oppositional, and nonclinical children and their parents were asked separately to interpret and provide plans of action to ambiguous scenarios. Afterwards, each family was asked to discuss two of these situations as a family and for the child to provide a final response. The results

'I don't want to hate him forever': understanding daughter's experiences of father absence.

OBJECTIVE: Father absence is associated with negative child and adolescent outcomes, including early sexual activity, teenage pregnancy, behavioural difficulties and life adversity. However there is a lack of literature that explores the lived experiences of daughters who grew up in father absent environments. This study aimed to generate insights into the lived experience of being a girl-child growing up in a father absent environment through the perspectives of daughters who experienced father absence during their childhood and/or adolescent years. DESIGN: Van Manen's phenomenological resea

The Finnish Family Competence Study: young fathers' views on health education.

The views of fathers of young families on health education were obtained using questionnaires issued through Maternity Health Care Clinics and Well-Baby Clinics. The present study is part of the Finnish Family Competence Study. The first phase of the study included 1,414 fathers whose wives were expecting their first baby. Of them, 1,279 returned a questionnaire. In the second phase, at week 28 of the wife's pregnancy, 1,123 fathers returned a questionnaire. A third questionnaire issued when the baby was born was completed by 1,134 fathers. A further questionnaire issued three months after the

Increases in plasma holotranscobalamin can be used to assess vitamin B-12 absorption in individuals with low plasma vitamin B-12.

Low plasma concentrations of vitamin B-12 are common in Indians, possibly due to low dietary intakes of animal-source foods. Whether malabsorption of the vitamin contributes to this has not been investigated. A rise in the plasma holotranscobalamin (holo-TC) concentration after a standard dose of oral vitamin B-12 has been proposed as a measure of gastrointestinal absorption in people with normal plasma vitamin B-12 concentrations. We studied 313 individuals (children and parents, 109 families) in the Pune Maternal Nutrition Study. They received 3 doses of 10 microg (n = 191) or 2 microg (n =

Adjustment problems in the family and school contexts, attitude towards authority, and violent behavior at school in adolescence.

This study analyzed the role of different but interrelated variables in the family and school contexts in relation to problems of violent behavior at school during adolescence. Participants were 1,068 students aged 11 to 16 (47% male) drawn from secondary schools in the Valencian Community (Spain). Statistical analyses were carried out using structural equation modeling. The model accounted for 32% of the variance in school violence. Results showed a direct association between quality of communication with father and teacher's expectations of the student with the adolescent's involvement in vi

Ocular morbidity profiles of out-of-school children in a North Indian urban slum.

PURPOSE: This study evaluates the recent trends in ocular morbidities and vision-related practices in "out-of-school" children in urban slums of Gurugram in North India. METHODS: In this observational study, a validated questionnaire was administered to 161 students from two nonformal slum schools. Sociocultural, demographic data, vision-related practices, and visual acuity with subjective refraction of the children were recorded. RESULTS: A total of 80 boys and 81 girls (9.17 ± 2.58 years) participated in this study. About 40% of the children were from lower socioeconomic status. The visual

Case Report: Expanding the LRP5-phenotypic spectrum of the novel c.4462A > G (p.Ser1488Gly) variant with isolated retinal involvement.

BACKGROUND: LRP5-related retinal disease is classically associated with familial exudative vitreoretinopathy (FEVR), whereas biallelic inactivating variants cause osteoporosis-pseudoglioma syndrome. We report a severe congenital FEVR-like retinal dysplasia in a child carrying the novel heterozygous LRP5 c.4462A > G (p.Ser1488Gly) variant of uncertain significance (VUS), adding carefully documented phenotypic layer to a ClinVar entry that has lacked disease-specific clinical context. Impact of indoor Air Pollution on the Linear growth of children in Jimma, Ethiopia.

BACKGROUND: Stunting in children is the term for reduced linear growth and development, which is frequently brought on by a persistently inadequate diet, recurrent infections and chronic diseases or poor health conditions. Apart from the classic covariates of stunting, which include diet and illness, the relative contribution of household air pollution to chronic nutrition conditions is least studied. Hence, this study is conducted to investigate the impact of household air pollution on the linear growth of under-five children in Jimma town, Ethiopia. METHODS: A prospective cohort study was e

Heredity of pregnancy-related pelvic girdle pain in Sweden.

INTRODUCTION: Pelvic girdle pain during and after pregnancy is a major public health problem with significant daily problems for affected women and their families. There is now accumulating evidence that pregnancy-related pelvic girdle pain originates from the sacroiliac joints and the pubic symphysis as well as their extra-articular ligaments. However, the heritability of the disease remains to be determined. We hypothesized that there is an increased familial risk of pregnancy-related pelvic girdle pain. MATERIAL AND METHODS: A population-based national database linkage registry study of ap

Breastfeeding in Bristol: teaching good positioning, and support from fathers and families.

OBJECTIVES: to determine whether a specific 'hands-off' breastfeeding technique, based on the physiology of suckling and clinical experience, if taught to mothers in the immediate postnatal period, improves their chances of breastfeeding successfully and reduces the incidence of problems. To investigate the factors associated with breastfeeding at two and six weeks postpartum using logistic regression analysis. DESIGN: a non-randomised prospective cohort phased intervention study. SETTING: subjects recruited from one postnatal ward in St. Michael's Hospital, Bristol from October 1996 to Nove

Parent and family impact of raising a child with perinatal stroke.

BACKGROUND: Perinatal stroke is a leading cause of early brain injury, cerebral palsy, and lifelong neurological morbidity. No study to date has examined the impact of raising a child with perinatal stroke on parents and families. However, a large breadth of research suggests that parents, especially mothers, may be at increased risk for psychological concerns. The primary aim of this study was to examine the impact of raising a child with perinatal stroke on mothers' wellbeing. A secondary aim was to examine how caring for a child with perinatal stroke differentially affects mothers and fathe

Effects of compulsory and free basic education policies and COVID-19-related educational disruptions on offspring mortality in low-income and middle-income countries: a quasi-experimental and modelling study.

BACKGROUND: Compulsory and free basic education policies (hereafter called education policies) are essential for enhancing educational attainment, which has been linked to improved offspring health outcomes. However, existing studies do not provide strong evidence with causal inference on how these policies influence offspring mortality in low-income and middle-income countries (LMICs). Furthermore, although COVID-19 has substantially disrupted education systems in LMICs, its long-term consequences for offspring mortality remain unclear. METHODS: We extracted individual-level data from the na

Male infertility and risk of cardiometabolic conditions: a population-based cohort study.

STUDY QUESTION: Is male infertility independently associated with an increased risk of incident hypertension, ischemic and non-ischemic heart disease, diabetes, and/or cerebrovascular disease? SUMMARY ANSWER: Fathers diagnosed with male infertility have a modestly increased risk of heart disease, diabetes, and hypertension compared with fertile fathers, after controlling for measured confounders; however, some important confounders remain inadequately measured. WHAT IS KNOWN ALREADY: Cohort studies suggest that infertile men have an increased risk of incident cardiometabolic diseases, includ

Maternal separation in childhood and diurnal cortisol patterns in mid-life: findings from the Whitehall II study.

BACKGROUND: Animal studies suggest that maternal separation is associated with alterations in the hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal (HPA) axis through effects that occur in a critical period following birth. Evidence for an association of the diurnal cortisol rhythm with maternal separation in humans is equivocal. METHOD: We examined whether maternal separation in childhood is associated with diurnal cortisol pattern in 3712 middle-aged men and women. Two aspects of cortisol release were examined: the cortisol awakening response (CAR) and the diurnal slope in cortisol throughout the day. RESULT

Anger in Adulthood in Participants Who Lost Their Father During the War in Croatia When They Were in Their Formative Age.

BACKGROUND: Loss of parents in early childhood can have serious long-term psychological consequences. Abandoned by a close figure of attachment, many persons have developed the emotion of anger, even though the separation was caused by death. The traumatic experience of the loss of a parent is particularly hard in war, because most often it does not occur as an individual trauma. Our aim is to research anger as a personality trait in persons whose father had died in war at a time when they were children, and to compare it with an appropriate civilian control group of subjects. SUBJECTS AND ME
