Women's fear of crime and abuse in college and university dating relationships.

Several government-sponsored victimization surveys have found women's fear of crime to be much higher than that of men even though their probability of being victimized is much lower than men's. On the basis of these results, several criminologists contend that women's fear is subjectively based. However, government surveys have not adequately examined the consequences of the physical, sexual, and psychological abuse of women by male intimates. Feminist researchers contend that these assaults greatly contribute to a generalized fear of crime that is objectively based. Using data from a nationa…

Expressed emotion and panic-fear in the prediction of diet treatment compliance.

The 'expressed emotion' (EE) of the key relatives of 30 severely obese patients was assessed on intake to a calorie-restricted diet programme. At the same time the patients and 30 matched controls were administered the MMPI 'panic-fear' scale. After five months on the diet the weight of the patients was measured, and weight loss or gain in the five-month period was used as an indicator of compliance or non-compliance with the treatment. The results indicated that the obese patients showed more anxiety (measured by the panic-fear scale) than did the control subjects. Compliant patients had lowe…

"How do I reduce the fear of missing out?" analyzing Reddit discussion of how people deal with the fear of missing out when reducing their alcohol use.

Alcohol use remains a public health concern due to the harm it can have on both the drinker and those around the drinker. One emerging factor that could be targeted by interventions is the fear of missing out (FoMO). FoMO is the sense that others are having rewarding experiences that you are missing out on, and research has found a link between FoMO and both alcohol use and harm. The aim of this study was to identify and describe how people who are aiming to reduce their drinking overcome or deal with FoMO to inform future intervention content. To address this aim, we collected and analyzed th…

Germs, Guns, and Fear in Disaster Response: A Rapid Qualitative Assessment to Understand Fear-Based Responses in the Population at Large: Lessons From Sierra Leone 2014-2015.

We set out to assess the feasibility of community-focused randomized qualitative assessment at the start of an emergency to identify the root causes of fear-based responses driving the pandemic. We used key informant interviews, focus group discussions, reviewing of government and non-government organization documents, combined with direct field observation. Data were recorded and analyzed for key-themes: (1) lack of evidence-based information about Ebola; (2) lack of support to quarantined families; (3) culturally imbedded practices of caring for ill family members; (4) strong feeling that th…

Dental Radiophobia: A Narrative Review of Prevalence, Associated Factors, and Public Health Consequences of Dental Radiography Fear in the Community - With a Focus on Both Patient and Clinician-Level Fear.

BACKGROUND: Dental radiography is an indispensable diagnostic tool, yet many patients experience fear specifically associated with radiographic examinations. This phenomenon-dental radiophobia-represents an exaggerated fear of ionizing radiation in the dental setting. This review examines both patient-level fear and clinician-level radiophobia, which manifests as unfounded concern about low-dose radiation that impedes CBCT adoption. METHODS: A narrative review was conducted using PubMed, Scopus, and Web of Science (2000-2025). Search terms included "dental radiophobia", "fear of dental X‑rays…

Effects of Intra-BLA Administration of PPAR Antagonists on Formalin-Evoked Nociceptive Behaviour, Fear-Conditioned Analgesia, and Conditioned Fear in the Presence or Absence of Nociceptive Tone in Rats.

There is evidence for the involvement of peroxisome proliferator-activated receptors (PPARs) in pain, cognition, and anxiety. However, their role in pain-fear interactions is unknown. The amygdala plays a key role in pain, conditioned fear, and fear-conditioned analgesia (FCA). We investigated the effects of intra-basolateral amygdala (BLA) administration of PPARα, PPARβ/δ, and PPARγ antagonists on nociceptive behaviour, FCA, and conditioned fear in the presence or absence of nociceptive tone. Male Sprague-Dawley (SD) rats received footshock (FC) or no footshock (NFC) in a conditioning arena. …

Development and psychometric validation of a patient-reported outcome measure to assess fears in rheumatoid arthritis and axial spondyloarthritis: the Fear Assessment in Inflammatory Rheumatic diseases (FAIR) questionnaire.

OBJECTIVES: To develop and validate an outcome measure for assessing fears in patients with rheumatoid arthritis (RA) and axial spondyloarthritis (axSpA). METHODS: Fears were identified in a qualitative study, and reformulated as assertions with which participants could rate their agreement (on a 0-10 numeric rating scale). A cross-sectional validation study was performed including patients diagnosed with RA or axSpA. Redundant items (correlation >0.65) were excluded. Internal consistency (Cronbach's α) and factorial structure (principal component analysis) were assessed. Patients were classi…

Parental fear of progression in juvenile idiopathic arthritis and type 1 diabetes.

BACKGROUND: This cross-sectional study examined the relevance and impact of fear of disease progression (FoP) to parents of youth with two common childhood chronic conditions—juvenile idiopathic arthritis (JIA) and type 1 diabetes mellitus (T1DM). METHODS: 124 parents (57 JIA, 67 T1DM; 107 mothers, 17 fathers) of youth aged 2–18 years (M=11.36, SD=3.90) were recruited through social media and patient organisation groups. Parents completed online questionnaires assessing fear of their child’s disease progression (FoP), responses to their children's symptoms and their own psychopathology. In ad…

Distinct representational properties of cues and contexts shape fear and reversal learning.

When we learn that something is dangerous, a fear memory is formed. However, this memory is not fixed and can be updated through new experiences, such as learning that the threat is no longer present. This process of updating, known as extinction or reversal learning, is highly dependent on the context in which it occurs. How the brain represents cues, contexts, and their changing threat value remains a major question. Here, we used functional magnetic resonance imaging and a novel fear learning paradigm to track the neural representations of stimuli across fear acquisition, reversal, and test…

Sleep deprivation alters hippocampal dendritic spines in a contextual fear memory engram.

Sleep is critically involved in strengthening memories. However, our understanding of the morphological changes underlying this process is still emerging. Recent studies suggest that specific subsets of dendritic spines are strengthened during sleep in specific neurons involved in recent learning. Contextual memories associated with traumatic experiences are involved in post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and represent recent learning that may be strengthened during sleep. We tested the hypothesis that dendritic spines encoding contextual fear memories are selectively impacted by sleep depri…

Phospholipase A2 downregulates inhibitory transmission in the amygdala and impairs fear extinction.

Dysregulated phospholipase A2 (PLA2) activity has been reported in multiple psychiatric disorders, yet its mechanistic contribution to pathological fear remains unclear. The 129S1/SvImJ (S1) mouse strain, which shows intact fear conditioning but profound deficits in fear extinction, provides a useful model for examining molecular pathways relevant to post-traumatic stress disorder. Using RNA sequencing, electrophysiology, and targeted pharmacological manipulation, we investigated whether altered PLA2 expression in amygdala circuits contributes to impaired extinction in S1 mice. S1 mice display…

Better safe than sorry: Avoidance of interoceptive threat following observational fear learning.

Learning through observation is often adaptive, allowing individuals to acquire important threat-related information without exposing themselves to danger. However, it can become maladaptive when it leads to excessive fear or avoidance in the absence of actual threat. This study examined whether observational learning of an interoceptive threat promotes avoidance behavior and how conditioned responding changes when avoidance is prevented. Forty healthy participants completed a three-phase observational fear conditioning paradigm. In the observational learning phase, participants watched a demo…

Beyond Fear Learning in Isolation: Integration of Social Dimensions into Aversive Learning.

Aversive learning paradigms in laboratory settings have led to valuable decades of research on the acquisition and expression of memories that produce fear and avoidance. However, the majority of these studies have focused on situations in which animals undergo aversive learning while they are in isolation. Although these studies have provided critical insights into the behavioral and neural processes guiding aversive learning, as well as translational insights into neuropsychiatric disorders, how social dimensions that are embedded in naturalistic aversive experiences influence these processe…

Hippocampal CA2 modulates trace fear conditioning through circuit-specific control of CA1.

Forming associations between temporally separated events depends on pathways linking the CA1, the subiculum (SUB), and the entorhinal cortex. The degree to which this process requires the CA2, which shares extensive connectivity with these regions, remains unknown. Using trace fear conditioning (TFC), where mice learn to associate a tone and shock separated by a temporal gap, we showed that the dCA2 contributes to TFC. Interestingly, whereas chronic dCA2 inhibition decreased cue-associated freezing, acute dCA2→dCA1 projection inhibition increased freezing. Combined with differential effects on…

Dopamine Response to Unexpected Aversive Outcomes Drives the Return of Extinguished Fear.

Background/Objectives: Dopamine is well known for its role in reward learning, where phasic activity encodes prediction errors and supports the formation of cue-outcome associations. More recently, dopamine has been implicated in encoding salience, novelty, and aversive events, suggesting a broader function in shaping learning and memory across motivational contexts. However, how accumbal dopamine contributes to the recovery of extinguished fear, a process central to relapse in anxiety and trauma-related disorders, remains unclear. Methods: Here, we examined NAc core dopamine dynamics during s…
