Hypertension in the Shadows of Conflict: The Impact of the Sudan War on Blood Pressure Management.

The Sudan conflict has severely impacted hypertension management, exacerbating the condition through chronic stress, disrupted healthcare, and lifestyle changes. Hypertension, a major risk factor for cardiovascular diseases, worsens with war-related stress and limited access to medications due to damaged healthcare infrastructure. Additionally, displacement, economic hardship, and food insecurity contribute to poor diets and reduced physical activity, further complicating blood pressure control. This article highlights the urgent need for adaptive healthcare strategies, such as mobile clinics …

Limitations with the Digestible Indispensable Amino Acid Score (DIAAS) with Special Attention to Plant-Based Diets: a Review.

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: This review describes several limitations of the Digestible Indispensable Amino Acid Score (DIAAS) with a focus on its application to plant-based dietary patterns. RECENT FINDINGS: Evaluating protein quality in terms of digestibility is paramount to support and optimize the health and well-being of human populations in situations where food insecurity and protein energy malnutrition are widespread. The Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) of the United Nations has endorsed the DIAAS to replace the previously recommended Protein Digestibility Corrected Amino Acid Score (P…

Sudan's Protracted Humanitarian Crisis: Pediatric and Maternal Health, Trauma-Informed Continuity of Care, and the Imperative for Sustained Global Action.

Sudan faces some of the most acute humanitarian crises in the world, driven by armed conflict, mass displacement, food insecurity, and the collapse of health systems. Women and children are in particular at risk. This article pools findings on maternal and pediatric health outcomes in Sudan, particularly antenatal access to care, children with amputations, trauma-informed care, and medical evacuation pathways. We contextualize Sudan in relation to global health disparities and assess humanitarian responses through child rights principles and the Sustainable Development Goals. Without sustained…

Intimate Partner Violence and Health: Can Resilience Mediate the Effects?

The association between intimate partner violence (IPV) and poor physical and mental health outcomes for women is well documented. Few studies examined factors that strengthen resilience of women exposed to IPV. A telephone survey was administered to 242 Lebanese and Syrian IPV-exposed women. Resilience was positively associated with age, personal income and negatively associated with household crowding index, depression, anxiety, somatic symptoms, PTSD, food and clothing insecurity, feeling safe, and community support. Resilience significantly mediated the relation between IPV exposure and ph

Scurvy: A Diagnosis Not to Be Missed.

Vitamin C deficiency, one of the oldest-known nutritional disorders, is now uncommon in high-income countries. Recently, however, there has been an increase in cases of vitamin C deficiency, also known as scurvy. We report three adult patients with histories of homelessness, food insecurity, and poor nutrition, making them particularly vulnerable to restrictive diets and at increased risk for scurvy. After proper diagnosis and treatment, favorable outcomes can be rapidly obtained. This case series emphasizes the importance of keeping a broad differential diagnosis and inquiring about nutrition…

Depression Among People Who Inject Drugs and Their Intimate Partners in Kazakhstan.

This paper examines individual, social, and structural factors associated with depression among 728 people who inject drugs (PWID) and their intimate partners in Kazakhstan, with separate multivariate models by gender. Depression scores were higher on average among participants of both genders who recently experienced sexual intimate partner violence, food insecurity, and who had lower levels of self-rated health. Among females, higher depression scores were associated with experiencing childhood sexual abuse, lower levels of social support, and not having children. Findings highlight a need t…

Digital technologies for sustainable food supply chains: a scoping review of impacts on food safety, loss reduction, and implications for nutritional security.

Digital technologies such as blockchain, Internet of Things (IoT), and artificial intelligence (AI) are increasingly applied in food supply chains (FSCs) to enhance traceability, monitoring, and quality detection. However, whether these technological advancements ultimately contribute to improved nutritional security remains unclear. This scoping review systematically examined the application of digital technologies across food supply chains and assessed their impacts on food safety, food loss reduction, and nutritional outcomes. Following PRISMA guidelines, we searched Web of Science, Scopus,

Neglected and Underutilized Species (NUS) of Crops: A Solution for Future Nutritional Challenges?

This article addresses the current state of global food insecurity and the rising burden of chronic diseases-both of which are nutrition-related crises-highlighting the urgent need to diversify the global dietary matrix. Currently, a mere four crops supply 60% of human energy intake, while macroeconomic barriers prevent over a third of the global population from affording a healthy diet. In this context, neglected and underutilized species (NUS) emerge as a highly sustainable and resilient alternative, given that certain species possess exceptional nutritional profiles and high adaptability to…

Associated factors of undernutrition among women of reproductive age living with HIV in Mahama Refugee Camp, Rwanda.

INTRODUCTION: Low dietary diversity in low- and middle-income countries (LMICs) usually results from households basing their diets on a small number of food groups beyond their staple foods. Numerous studies have demonstrated that among people in both developed and developing nations, dietary diversity is a reliable indicator of dietary quality. Humanitarian crises over the past few decades have altered the patterns of food consumption in refugee camps, where the prevalence of food insecurity has significantly grown, resulting in undernutrition and chronic diseases. Therefore, our study determ…

A cholera outbreak among semi-nomadic pastoralists in northeastern Uganda: epidemiology and interventions.

In sub-Saharan Africa, many nomadic pastoralists have begun to settle in permanent communities as a result of long-term water, food, and civil insecurity. Little is known about the epidemiology of cholera in these emerging semi-nomadic populations. We report the results of a case-control study conducted during a cholera outbreak among semi-nomadic pastoralists in the Karamoja sub-region of northeastern Uganda in 2010. Data from 99 cases and 99 controls were analysed. In multivariate analyses, risk factors identified were: residing in the same household as another cholera case [adjusted odds ra

Connecting People to Food: A Network Approach to Alleviating Food Deserts.

INTRODUCTION: In 2020, 13.8 million people in the United States struggled with food security. This means they were uncertain whether their food needs would be met. Where someone lives can influence struggles with food security. Food deserts are census tracts that experience high rates of poverty (20 percent of residents at/below poverty thresholds) and low access to grocery stores with nutritious foods. Food deserts and insecurity disproportionately affect disadvantaged communities and may contribute to health issues like diabetes, high blood pressure, and obesity. Public policies can be utili
