Central oral pulse granuloma: a case report of huge mandibular jaw lesion.

Oral pulse granuloma is a rare lesion of the oral cavity with unclear etiology. Some authors believe this lesion is a foreign body reaction to implanted food particles. In the oral cavity, most cases are found in the posterior regions of the mandible. The edentulous mandible was involved in 20 cases with oral pulse granuloma. In these cases, the premolar-molar site was the most common region. Here we present a case of a 70-year-old male with huge unilateral swelling of the mandible on the left side. This paper aims to present a case of oral pulse granuloma with wide extension, detailed clinico

A Curious Case of Omental Oxalate Crystals in a Patient With Struma Ovarii: Pointers to an Unusual Clinicopathological Scenario.

Percutaneous image-guided biopsies are becoming increasingly common in routine pathology practice, with the greater omentum emerging as a common target. We present herein an account of a middle-aged lady with a complex ovarian mass, omental thickening, and raised serum CA125; clinically suspected to have advanced ovarian malignancy. Fine needle aspiration cytology (FNAC) from the ovarian mass was inconclusive. Omental biopsy revealed only refractile, birefringent crystalline material with surrounding foreign body giant cell reaction; thus surprising the clinical team. Subsequent resection of t

A Case of Orbital Granuloma Secondary to Dermal Filler Injection.

A foreign body granulomatous reaction is a rare complication of the subcutaneous injection of fillers. We describe a 57-year-old female that presented with a six-month history of a non-painful, right lower eyelid mass. She had a dermal filler in the zygomatic region several months before the onset of her symptoms. Anterior orbitotomy and pathology revealed multinuclear giant cells consistent with a hyaluronic acid-based filler. This case describes the clinical presentation, histopathologic features, and treatment of an orbital granuloma secondary to dermal filler injection. Our case was uncomm

Meconium aspiration pneumonia and otitis media in two goat kids.

We report meconium aspiration in 2 sibling goat kids, and characterize the expected lesions of aspiration pneumonia in conjunction with the rare lesion of otitis media. Grossly, the lungs were multifocally consolidated, and there was yellow-green exudate within the middle ear. Histologically, the lung was characterized by pyogranulomatous pneumonia and foreign-body reaction around aspirated debris. Within the lumen of the middle ear, aspirated squamous cells, keratin, meconium debris, and neutrophils, without evidence of bacteria, were accompanied by a subepithelial accumulation of lymphocytes…

Chronic abdominal pain secondary to mesh erosion into cecum following incisional hernia repair: a case report and literature review.

Incisional hernias following abdominal operations are a common complication. Mesh is frequently employed to repair these hernias. Given the popularity of minimally invasive surgery utilizing polypropylene mesh for incisional hernia repair, related complications such postoperative hematoma and seroma, foreign body reaction, organ injury, infection, mesh rejection, and fistula are being noted. Mesh migration is an infrequent occurrence, and is rarely reported in the literature. Those that are usually involve the urinary bladder. In particular, review of literature shows no reports of cases of me

A biodegradable expansion plug for fixation of the coracoid bone block in the Bristow-Latarjet operation.

In a prospective study, 33 patients with recurrent anterior dislocation of the shoulder were treated by a modified Bristow-Latarjet operation using a biodegradable poly-L-lactide expansion plug to fix the transferred coracoid bone block. The mean follow up was 12 months. No redislocations occurred. To assess incorporation of the bone block, serial CT scans were obtained in 18 randomly selected patients and 15 showed solid fusion. The shape of the implant was not affected by degradation during the first 18 months and there were no signs of inflammatory foreign body reaction. This type of plug a

Giant Teflon granuloma of the larynx.

Endolaryngeal injection of Teflon paste to augment and medialize the paralyzed hemilarynx aims to improve dysphonia and relieve aspiration. After an initial short-lived inflammatory reaction in the laryngeal tissues, a foreign body granuloma forms around the Teflon. In most cases the results are good but it may occasionally be necessary to consider removal of the granuloma if too large a volume has been injected, if it is inappropriately placed, or if the paralyzed vocal cord subsequently recovers. Surgical removal is difficult and the results are unpredictable. This case illustrates, for the

Periodontal manifestations of hyperoxaluria and oxalosis.

Dental and periodontal findings associated with primary hyperoxaluria in a 29-year old male patient are described. This is a rare, inherited … ligament. Crystalline calcium oxalate deposits in the periodontal ligament provoked a granulomatous foreign-body reaction. This resulted in aggressive external root resorption leading to pulp exposure and tooth mobility.

Suitability of calcium phosphate cement for injection laryngoplasty in rabbits.

Calcium phosphate cement (CPC) consists of powder and liquid, which become an injectable paste after mixing, self-hardening and recrystallizing to calcium hydroxylapatite (CaHA) after injection into a living body. In this study, we investigated the suitability of CPC as an injectable material for injection laryngoplasty using rabbits. All rabbits underwent left recurrent laryngeal nerve section and injection laryngoplasty with CPC. At 7 days, scanning electron microscopic findings revealed that complete recrystallization from CPC to CaHA was achieved in the larynx. At 1, 3, and 6 months, injec

Under the Skin: A Review of Sea Urchin Granulomas and Delayed Dermal Reactions to Echinoid Spines.

Sea urchin injuries are common in coastal and tropical environments, often resulting in immediate pain and mechanical trauma. In a subset of patients, retained spine fragments trigger delayed granulomatous reactions that present diagnostic and therapeutic challenges. These "sea urchin granulomas" encompass a histopathologic spectrum including foreign body, sarcoidal, suppurative, and necrobiotic subtypes. This review synthesizes clinical, immunologic, diagnostic, and therapeutic insights from 36 peer-reviewed studies describing over 120 cases. Granulomas typically emerge weeks to months after

Augmenting dermal collagen synthesis through hyaluronic acid-based microneedle-mediated delivery of poly(l-lactic acid) microspheres.

Poly(L-lactic acid) (PLLA) can stimulate collagen synthesis through a foreign body response. However, inappropriate injection techniques and localized PLLA clustering can lead to complications and adverse events. This study developed a composite microneedle (MN) device comprising an array of PLLA microsphere (PLLA MP)-loaded hyaluronic acid needle tips with a supporting patch (PLLA MP-MN). This device was designed to deliver PLLA MPs precisely and uniformly to the dermis and to provide dual stimulation through MN puncture and MP implantation, thereby enabling the rapid and long-lasting regener

Silicone-induced Penile Sclerosing Lipogranuloma: Magnetic Resonance Imaging Findings.

Sclerosing lipogranuloma is a rare benign disease, representing a peculiar granulomatous reaction of fatty tissue. The majority of cases are secondary to injection of exogenous foreign bodies, such as silicone, paraffin, mineral, or vegetable oils. To the best of our knowledge, we present the first case of a silicone-induced penile lipogranuloma in a 52-year-old man evaluated with a multiparametric magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) protocol, including diffusion-weighted imaging, magnetization transfer imaging, and dynamic contrast-enhanced MRI. MRI of the penis by combining both conventional an

New resorbable plate and screw system in pediatric craniofacial surgery.

Early forms of resorbable fixation induced foreign body reactions requiring surgical removal of the fixation material. Most current plating systems attempt to circumvent this phenomenon by altering the composition of the α esters involved. ResorbX (KLS Martin, Jacksonville, FL), a plating system derived from 50:50 poly(D,L)lactide, boasts short resorption times, minimal foreign body reaction, and adequate strength for bony fixation. We present our experience with 134 patients undergoing correction of primary craniosynostosis, using ResorbX. One hundred thirty-four consecutive craniosynostosis

Dexamethasone eluting cochlear implant: Histological study in animal model.

OBJECTIVE: New cochlear implant (CI) designs and developments in implantation techniques have revolutionized the management of hearing loss. However, cochlear implantation still has some disadvantages, such as its potential to initiate an inflammatory response that may lead to further hair cell damage. Recent topics of investigation have been the effect of glucocorticoids on inflammatory tissue response reduction, glucocorticoid dosage levels, and drug-delivery methods. In the present study, dexamethasone delivery via a drug-eluting CI was evaluated histologically through assessing inflammator

[Unusual complication of silicon synovitis in the rheumatoid wrist].

Silicone synovitis is an important clinical entity recognized in rheumatoid patients after arthroplasties with silicone implants. It is a foreign body reaction to particulate material (silicone elastomer) characterized clinically by the re-occurrence of pain, stiffness and swelling at the site of arthroplasty after initial relief of symptoms. Whereas silicone synovitis is a rare complication in metacarpophalangeal implants, it is an important one in the wrist implant. Long-term follow-up studies have revealed that the rates of fracture and subsidence are high and that the implants deteriorate
