Segmentation procedures for the assessment of paranasal sinuses volumes.

BACKGROUND: The paranasal sinuses are complex anatomical structures, characterised by highly variable shape, morphology and size. With the introduction of multidetector scanners and the development of many post-processing possibilities, computed tomography became the gold standard technique to image the paranasal sinuses. Segmentation allows the extraction of metrical and shape data of these anatomical components that can be applied for diagnostic, education, surgical planning and simulation, and to plan minimally invasive interventions in otorhinolaryngology and neurosurgery. DISCUSSION: Our

Computed tomography and sectional anatomy of the head cavities in donkey (Equus asinus).

The purpose of this study was to describe the computed tomographic (CT) anatomy of normal donkey head cavities to be used as a basis for interpretation of CT images of donkey. Six adult donkeys' heads of undetermined sex were used in this study. The donkey heads were divided into three regions-nasal, orbital, and cranial-to show the morphology of the following cavities: nasal cavity, paranasal sinuses, orbital cavity, oral cavity, pharyngeal cavity, especially the guttural pouch, cranial cavity and temporomandibular joint. The donkey head had six pairs of sinuses: three paranasal (the frontal,

The Comparison of Piriform Aperture, Paranasal Sinuses, and Cranial Dimensions.

OBJECTIVE: Piriform aperture, paranasal sinuses, and the cranium dimensions were compared with each other and we investigated the alterations depending on the age and gender in these structures. Before the endoscopic sinus surgery, anatomic variations in sinusoidal region and the occurring differences should be considered. The detection of these variations plays important roles in the prevention of complications which may happen in surgery or in obtaining a successful surgical result. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Piriform aperture maximum width, frontal sinuses, sphenoidal sinuses, maxillary sinuse

Secondary Reconstruction of Frontal Sinus Fracture.

Fractures of frontal sinus account for 5%-12% of all fractures of facial skeleton. Inadequately treated frontal sinus injuries may result in malposition of sinus structures, as well as subsequent distortion of the overlying soft tissue. Such inappropriate treatment can result in aesthetic complaints (contour deformity) as well as medical complications (recurrent sinusitis, mucocele or mucopyocele, osteomyelitis of the frontal bone, meningitis, encephalitis, brain abscess or thrombosis of the cavernous sinus) with potentially fatal outcomes. Frontal contour deformity warrants surgical intervent

Tension Pneumocephalus After Frontal Sinus Balloon Dilation due to Inadvertent Skull Base Entry: A Cautionary Case Emphasizing Preoperative Anatomic Assessment.

Balloon sinus dilation is widely utilized for the management of chronic rhinosinusitis and is generally considered safe when employed in appropriately selected patients. However, successful frontal sinus balloon dilation may be technically challenging due to the complexity of the frontal recess anatomy and is associated with potentially serious complications including skull base injury. We report a case of a 78-year-old man who developed acute tension pneumocephalus following office-based frontal balloon sinuplasty due to inadvertent skull base entry in the setting of complex frontal recess an

The Draf III procedure: A review of indications and techniques.

The Draf Ⅲ procedure involves the creation of a common frontal sinus cavity. The most common indication for the Draf Ⅲ procedure is chronic rhinosinusitis of the frontal sinuses despite the failure of more conservative interventions such as bilateral Draf Ⅱa procedures. Primary Draf Ⅲ may be indicated in patients with a high risk of failures such as those with severe polyposis and those with a frontal sinus opening less than 4 mm on computed tomography imaging. Other indications for the Draf Ⅲ include access for tumor removal and repair of traumatic fractures of the frontal sinus. The "inside-

MR Imaging in Covid-19-Associated Invasive Fungal Sinusitis.

BACKGROUND AND AIM: We witnessed a sharp peak in the incidence of invasive fungal sinusitis, particularly mucormycosis, in patients with history of coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) infection in India. Rhino-orbito-cerebral mucormycosis (ROCM) is a fulminant rapidly progressive disease. Early diagnosis significantly improves patient survival and outcomes. Hence, neuroimaging plays a very important role. We studied the magnetic resonance (MR) imaging manifestations of invasive fungal sinusitis and established an imaging protocol, which helps in early diagnosis of the disease per se as well as

The completely opacified frontal or sphenoid sinus: a marker of more severe disease in chronic rhinosinusitis?

OBJECTIVE: Determine whether complete opacification of the sphenoid or frontal sinus is associated with increased clinical severity of chronic rhinosinusitis (CRS). METHODS: Adult patients undergoing evaluation for CRS prospectively completed the rhinosinusitis symptom inventory (RSI) and underwent computed tomography of the paranasal sinuses. A cohort with at least one completely opacified frontal sinus was identified. To each patient in this opacified cohort, a control patient without complete frontal sinus opacification was matched with corresponding Lund score. Symptom scores for headache

Frontal Sinus Repair Using Polymethyl Methacrylate After Bifrontal Craniotomy.

BACKGROUND: In many cases in which bifrontal craniotomy is performed, the frontal sinus is opened, and postoperative complications occur. Various methods to close the frontal sinus have been reported. However, all these methods require skill to perform and take time. The aim of this study was to report results obtained with closure of the frontal sinus using polymethyl methacrylate, which is a simpler method. METHODS: From December 2008 to June 2018, 122 patients with a ruptured anterior communicating aneurysm were transported to the authors' facility, and 52 patients consecutively underwent

[Endonasal frontal sinus surgery. Part 1: Frontal sinus drainage, types I and II].

Endonasal frontal sinus surgery aims to create adequate access to the frontal sinus, remove specific pathologic processes, and establish a permanent and sufficient drainage and ventilation. We present a concept of frontal sinus surgery that depends on the individual anatomy of the frontal and ethmoid sinuses and includes a stepwise intensity of the surgical procedure. Endonasal frontal sinus drainage according to Draf ranges from uncinectomy to the maximal procedure, type III drainage; these procedures are outlined in detail. [Cholestaetoma of the frontal sinus in a child].

Cholesteatoma is a relatively common disease of the middle ear and mastoid process, but is rare in the paranasal sinuses. Among the paranasal sinusis, the frontal sinus is the most common location. Given the rarity of localization, there is no consensus on treatment tactics. Maximum surgical removal of the formation is the only effective treatment method. However, the choice of optimal access and the need for intraoperative obliteration of the sinus remain a question. The article presents a rare clinical case of frontal sinus cholesteatoma in a child with successful surgical treatment using os

Sino-Orbital Osteoma With Osteoblastoma-Like Features.

An 18 year old male presented with worsening headaches, pain with ocular movement and swelling that involved the left anterior periorbital and frontal sinus region. Radiographic images revealed a polypoid bony mass of mixed radiodensity extending into the left and right frontal sinuses. Histologic examination of the resection material resulted in the diagnosis of an osteoma with osteoblastoma-like features, an osteoma variant that has zones indistinguishable from an osteoblastoma. The clinical, radiographic, and morphologic features of sino-orbital osteoma with osteoblastoma-like features are

Treatment of frontal sinus mucoceles with the osteoplastic flap technique.

The osteoplastic flap technique for treating frontal sinus mucoceles is described. This procedure has the advantages of: being a direct approach, which allows exposure of the entire sinus, provides complete obliteration of the sinus to prevent recurrence of the sinus disease, and prevents blind curettage of any exposed dura mater; leaving no facial deformity after the operation; being a relatively atraumatic procedure with low morbidity and minimum postoperative care; and allowing simultaneous surgery on both frontal sinuses when indicated.

X-ray computed tomography-aided diagnosis of nasal adenocarcinoma, with extension to the skull and central nervous system, in a dog.

A dog with tonoclonic seizures, disorientation, and tetraparesis was evaluated by use of skull radiography. An advanced, highly aggressive process was centered within the caudal portion of the right nasal cavity. X-ray computed tomography further defined the mass to be occupying the caudal portion of the nasal cavity and frontal sinuses, with concurrent involvement of the adjacent turbinates and frontal, maxillary, and palatine bones. Despite the aggressive nature of the process, no alteration to the external contour of the cranium or nose was observed. Histologic examination revealed well-dif

Epistaxis as the First Manifestation of Silent Renal Cell Carcinoma: A Case Report with Relevant Literature Review.

The paranasal sinuses are known to be a rare location for metastasis. Renal cell carcinoma (RCC) is the most frequent primary tumor to metastasize to the sinonasal region, followed by lung and breast cancer. In particular, clear cell type RCC, which represents approximately 85% of RCCs, is characterized by early metastasis, and it sometimes spreads to unusual sites (1, 2). Metastatic tumors in the paranasal sinuses are distributed in the maxillary, sphenoid, ethmoid, and frontal sinuses, in order of decreasing frequency. Symptoms are usually nonspecific, but epistaxis is the most common sign,

Post-operative evaluation of functional endoscopic sinus surgery with computed tomography.

Fifty consecutive patients underwent functional endoscopic sinus surgery (FES) for bilateral rhinosinusitis. Pre- and post-operative computerized tomographic scans were evaluated. Of 50 patients, 45 (90%) experienced improvement in symptoms. Post-operative scans gave less encouraging results, with a slightly improved score for the combined group of sinuses and for the ethmoidal and maxillary sinuses separately. The difference between the pre- and post-operative CT score for the ethmoidal sinuses was statistically significant. The frontal sinus showed similar pre- and post-operative radiologica

Unilateral Absence of Ethmoid Sinus and Nasal Turbinates: A Rare Case Report.

A variety of anatomical variation of paranasal sinus and nasal turbinates exist, as its development is a complex and long standing process. Computerized Tomography (CT) of the paranasal sinuses is a very valuable tool in diagnosing these variations. Preoperatively defining the anatomical variations of the intranasal structures is essential in performing the safe functional endoscopic sinus surgery and to avoid unnecessary complications. Several degrees and combinations of aplasias and hypoplasias have been reported. We report a case of 37-year-old male who presented with bilateral nasal block

A quite rare condition: absence of sphenoidal sinuses.

The absence of sphenoidal sinuses (SS) in an adult is an extremely rare condition. We investigated in agenesis of the sphenoid, maxillary, ethmoid, and frontal sinuses in 20 male adult cadavers. In a 50-year-old man, bilateral absence of the SS was observed. On the macroscopic examination, opening of the SS was not found on the lateral wall of the nasal cavity. There were multiple small mucosal grooves between the sphenoidal rostrum and the superior nasal turbinates. The bulging of the sphenoidal rostrum at the choanal level was flat. The body of the sphenoid bone was normal and consisted of a
