Childhood abuse and adult-onset asthma among Peruvian women.

OBJECTIVE: Childhood abuse has been found to be associated with adult-onset asthma; however, this association has not been studied in low- and middle-income countries with a high burden of gender-based violence, including childhood abuse. We examined the odds of asthma diagnosed at age 18 or older in relation to history of physical and sexual abuse among Peruvian pregnant women. METHODS: This cross-sectional study collected demographic characteristics, history of abuse and asthma diagnoses from 3081 pregnant women. Logistic regression procedures estimated adjusted odds ratios and 95% confiden

Adjusted effects of domestic violence, tobacco use, and indoor air pollution from use of solid fuel on child mortality.

Studies that have separately examined the consequences of gender based violence upon women, use of solid fuel for cooking, and mother and father's use of tobacco on child health have concluded that they serve as risk factors for maternal and child health. Some authors have implied that these studies may have run the risk of overestimating the burden of disease of one factor over another. In this paper, we included all four factors in the same model to estimate their adjusted effects on child mortality, controlling for the demographic factors. The data come from 2005 to 2006 National Family Hea

Prevalence, disparities, and trends in intimate partner violence against women living in urban slums in 34 low-income and middle-income countries: a multi-country cross-sectional study.

BACKGROUND: Intimate partner violence (IPV) is a significant public health issue, closely tied to social and neighborhood environments. The impoverished, overcrowded, and stressful conditions in urban slums may heighten IPV risk, yet evidence remains limited. This study aims to assess the prevalence, disparities, and trends of IPV in urban slums across low- and middle-income countries (LMICs). METHODS: This cross-sectional study used nationally representative Demographic and Health Surveys data from 2006 to 2023, focusing on countries with available domestic violence data for women aged 15-49

"If I don't take my treatment, I will die and who will take care of my child?": An investigation into an inclusive community-led approach to addressing the barriers to HIV treatment adherence by postpartum women living with HIV.

INTRODUCTION: Initiatives to support adherence to HIV treatment in South Africa are often centred on service delivery thereby avoiding key challenges to adherence: stigma and poverty. In contrast, this study aims to demonstrate the strength of an inclusive research and programme approach to improving the lives of people living with HIV and simultaneously ARV adherence. METHODS: Participatory Action Research combined with a visual participatory method (Photovoice) was used by postpartum women to share their experience of taking ARVs. The research was analysed from an interpretative and critica

Comment on: Knowledge, role and perceptions of male partners on pre-eclampsia in sub-Saharan Africa: A systematic review of evidence from qualitative and quantitative studies.

Pre-eclampsia is a serious pregnancy condition that requires early recognition and timely care. A recent review by Asiedu and colleagues showed that male partners may support women during pregnancy through financial preparation, shared decision-making, emotional support, household assistance, and information sharing. This Letter acknowledges the importance of that review but qualifies its policy message: partner involvement should be woman-centered, non-coercive, and linked to practical emergency preparedness rather than assumed to be essential or sufficient on its own. Treating Complex Trauma in Adolescence: A Case Study of Brief Focal Psychotherapy After Vicarious Gender Violence and Child Abuse.

This study aims to illustrate the impact of accumulated traumatic experiences in adolescence and to evaluate the potential of brief focal psychotherapy (BFP) as a treatment approach for complex trauma. We present the case of a 14-year-old boy who experienced vicarious gender-based violence, child abuse, early maternal separation without alternative secure attachment figures, and forced sudden migration. The patient exhibited symptoms consistent with post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and complex trauma. The culturally sensitive intervention, delivered at a public child and adolescent mental

Help-seeking behaviors among survivors of intimate partner violence during pregnancy in 54 low- and middle-income countries: evidence from Demographic and Health Survey data.

BACKGROUND: Intimate partner violence (IPV) during pregnancy is a global issue of public health importance. Due to the low rates of help-seeking in response to IPV, research on survivors' help-seeking behaviors is scarce, particularly within low- and middle-income countries (LMICs). The present study provides a cross-national evidence of informal and formal help-seeking patterns among pregnant women experiencing IPV. METHODS: This study made use of population-based data from the Demographic and Health Surveys (DHS) Program from 54 LMICs, collected between 2005 and 2020 (N = 359,027). Applying

Restrictive Masculinity Norms and Behavioral Health Outcomes Among Rhode Island Sexual and Gender Minority Young Adults.

INTRODUCTION: Restrictive masculinity norms (RMNs), characterized by emotional suppression, dominance, and risk-taking, have been linked to adverse health among cisgender heterosexual men. Little is known about how RMNs operate among sexual and gender minority (SGM) populations, particularly transgender young adults.  Methods: Data were from the 2024 Rhode Island Young Adult Survey, a cross-sectional, web-based survey of adults aged 18-25 years. Analyses were restricted to SGM participants (n=438), with sub-analyses among transgender young adults (n=100). RMNs were measured using a 12-item que

A Mixed Methods Exploration of Young Women's Agency and Mental Health during COVID-19 in Low-Income Communities in Mumbai, India.

INTRODUCTION: Adolescent girls and young women (AGYW) in India face additional health inequities compared to their male peers, as gender norms constrain agency for prevention and self-care. The onset of the COVID-19 pandemic and associated lockdowns deepened health inequities and often worsened mental health, but the impacts on agency are unclear. This exploratory sequential mixed methods paper examined mental health and COVID-19 elements that exacerbated or mitigated adverse consequences for AGYW in low-income communities in Mumbai. METHODS: We conducted semi-structured interviews with AGYW

Multilevel analysis of women's empowerment and maternal high-risk fertility behavior in Sub-Saharan Africa, 2011-2022.

BACKGROUND: High-risk fertility behaviors remain a persistent public health challenge in sub-Saharan Africa, where maternal mortality and fertility rates are high. Women's empowerment is an essential factor in understanding and addressing high-risk fertility behaviors. However, previous studies have often focused on singular aspects of empowerment, such as education or decision-making authority. This study adopts a multidimensional approach to examine the association between women's empowerment and high-risk fertility behaviors across sub-Saharan Africa. METHODS: We used Demographic and Healt

Effects of Victimization and Violence on Suicidal Ideation and Behaviors Among Sexual Minority and Heterosexual Adolescents.

PURPOSE: Sexual minority youth (SMY) are at higher risk for victimization and suicide than are heterosexual youth (HY). Relatively little research has examined which types of victimization are most closely linked to suicide, which is necessary to develop targeted prevention interventions. The present study was conducted to address this deficit. METHODS: The data come from the 2011 Chicago Youth Risk Behavior Survey (n = 1,907). Structural equation modeling (SEM) in Mplus evaluated the direct, indirect, and total effects of sexual orientation on a latent indicator of suicidal ideation and beha

The contribution of childhood trauma to irritability symptoms.

BACKGROUND: Irritability is a transdiagnostic psychiatric phenotype defined as an increased proneness to anger relative to peers. Trauma is defined as actual or threatened death, serious injury, or sexual violence while adversity more broadly describes difficult or challenging situations including abuse, neglect, and household dysfunction. Irritability [or aggression] is symptom of posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and may arise in response to trauma or traumatic events. Responses to negative early life experiences may differ based on the type of exposure, for example, threat (abuse) versus

Social consequences of mass quarantine during epidemics: a systematic review with implications for the COVID-19 response.

Four billion people worldwide have experienced coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) confinement. Such unprecedented extent of mobility restriction to curb the COVID-19 pandemic may have profound impacts on how individuals live, travel and retain well-being. This systematic review aims to identify (i) the social consequences of mass quarantine-community-wide movement restrictions-during previous and current infectious disease outbreaks and (ii) recommended strategies to mitigate the negative social implications of COVID-19 lockdowns. Considering social determinants of health, we conducted a syst
