The fate of antibiotic resistance genes (ARGs) in aquatic environments, especially in rivers and reservoirs, is receiving growing attention in South Korea because reservoirs are an important source of drinking water in this country. Seasonal changes in the abundance of 11 ARGs and a mobile genetic element () in two reservoirs in South Korea, located near drinking water treatment plants in Cheonan and Cheongju cities, were monitored for 6 mo. In these drinking water sources, total ARG concentrations reached 2.5 × 10 copies mL, which is one order of magnitude higher than in influents of some was

Antimicrobial resistance (AMR) is a multifactorial global public health concern that is interlinked with the health of humans, animals, and the environment. Therapeutically important antibiotics used widely in the mass medication of livestock have contributed significantly to AMR, as they eventually enter the environment due to inadequate treatment of wastewater. Similarly, improper discharge of antibiotic-contaminated waste by the medical sector exacerbates the problem by contributing to the increase in the selection of resistant bacteria and the horizontal transfer of resistance genes. Salmonella is one of the leading causes of human foodborne gastroenteritis in the United States. In addition, Salmonella contributes to morbidity and mortality in livestock. The control of Salmonella is an increasing problematic issue in livestock production due to lack of effective control methods and the constant adaptation of Salmonella to new management practices, which is often related to horizontal acquisition of virulence or antibiotic resistance genes. Salmonella enterica serotype Heidelberg is one of the most commonly isolated serotypes in all poultry production systems in North Ameri

Coastal mangrove sediments are critical reservoirs of antibiotic and heavy metal resistance genes (ARGs/HMRGs). Yet, how pollution history shapes their dissemination remains unclear. We elucidated this by comparing sedimentary resistomes across three distinct ecosystems: a pristine site (BH), a site under mid-term copper stress (BHCu), and a chronically multi-polluted site (FT). Chronic multi-pollution generated a persistent co-resistance reservoir, significantly enriching ARGs, HMRGs, mobile genetic elements (MGEs), and transferable ARG-MGE clusters. Bioavailable metal fractions cooperated wi

OBJECTIVE: The global rise of colistin resistance, primarily mediated by the mcr-1 gene, threatens the efficacy of one of the last-resort treatments for multidrug-resistant Gram-negative infections. While mcr genes have been reported in clinical, veterinary and limited environmental samples in Qatar, there is a notable gap in data regarding their presence in wastewater.
METHODS: Fifteen composite wastewater samples were collected across multiple rounds in Qatar. Escherichia coli isolates were screened for colistin resistance, and mcr-1-positive strains were identified. Antimicrobial susceptib

Antimicrobial resistance (AMR) is a major global public health challenge, driven by the persistence and dissemination of antibiotic-resistant bacteria and antibiotic resistance genes (ARGs). These resistance determinants can accumulate and spread across diverse environmental compartments, including wastewater, hospital effluents, agricultural systems, and landfills, facilitating their dissemination through mechanisms such as horizontal gene transfer. Bacteriophages have emerged as promising tools for the targeted control of antibiotic-resistant bacterial populations, as their lytic activity ca

Horizontal gene transfer constitutes an important force in prokaryotic genome evolution, and it is well-known that plasmids are vehicles for DNA transfer. Chromosomal DNA is frequently exchanged between pathogenic and commensal neisseriae, but relatively little is known about plasmid diversity and prevalence among these nasopharyngeal inhabitants. We investigated the plasmid contents of 18 Neisseria lactamica isolates and 20 nasopharyngeal Neisseria meningitidis isolates. Of 18 N. lactamica strains, 9 harbored one or more plasmids, whereas only one N. meningitidis isolate contained a plasmid.

BACKGROUND: Co-colonization of methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) and vancomycin-resistant Enterococci (VRE) may result in the transfer of drug-resistant genes. The aim of this meta-analysis was to estimate the pooled co-colonization prevalence of MRSA and VRE.
METHODS: We searched PubMed, Embase, and Web of Science databases. The co-colonization prevalence of MRSA and VRE was assessed by calculating the proportion and 95% confidence intervals (CI). The random-effects model was used to calculate the pooled prevalence.
RESULTS: Eleven eligible studies were included in this met

Antibiotic resistance is a growing threat to human health, caused in part by pathogens accumulating antibiotic resistance genes (ARGs) through horizontal gene transfer. New ARGs are typically not recognized until they have become widely disseminated, which limits our ability to reduce their spread. In this study, we use large-scale computational screening of bacterial genomes to identify previously undiscovered mobile ARGs in pathogens. From ~1 million genomes, we predict 1,071,815 genes encoding 34,053 unique aminoglycoside-modifying enzymes (AMEs). These cluster into 7,612 families (<70% ami

The aim of this study was to determine the phylogenetic diversity of ceftriaxone resistance and the presence of known extended-spectrum β-lactamase (ESBL) genes in culturable soil resistomes. Libraries of soil bacterial isolates resistant to ceftriaxone were established from six physicochemically diverse soils collected in Hawaii (USA) and Israel. The phylogenetic affiliation, ceftriaxone and multidrug resistance levels, and presence of known ESBL genes of the isolates were determined. The soil bacterial isolates were phylogenetically grouped with the Alphaproteobacteria, Betaproteobacteria, G

In this study, we focused on evaluating the occurrence of extended-spectrum β-lactamase (ESBL)-producing Escherichia coli in fecal samples of healthy ducks and environmental samples from a duck farm in South China. Duck cloacal swabs and pond water samples were cultivated on MacConkey agar plates supplemented with ceftiofur. Individual colonies were examined for ESBL production. Bacteria identified as E. coli were screened for the presence of ESBL and plasmid-borne AmpC genes. The genetic relatedness, plasmid replicon type, and genetic background were determined. Of 245 samples analyzed, 123 h

Lactiplantibacillus plantarum are probiotic bacteria, maintaining the integrity of the gastrointestinal epithelial barrier, and preventing the infection of pathogenic bacteria. Exopolysaccharides (EPSs) are often involved in the probiotic property of L. plantarum. Here, we identified a new EPS-synthetic gene cluster, cpsWc, carrying 13 genes, laid on a large plasmid in a well-characterized probiotic L. plantarum strain LTC-113. The cpsWc gene cluster was horizontally acquired from Weissella cibaria, enhancing the biofilm formation ability of the host strain and its tolerance to harsh environme

A dramatic increase in global antimicrobial resistance (AMR) has been well documented. Of particular concern is the dearth of information regarding the spectrum and prevalence of AMR within Category A Select Agents. Here, we performed a survey of horizontally and vertically transferred AMR determinants among Category A agents and their near neighbors. Microarrays provided broad spectrum screening of 127 Francisella spp., Yersinia spp., and Bacillus spp. strains for the presence/absence of 500+ AMR genes (or families of genes). Detecting a broad variety of AMR genes in each genus, microarray an

The spread of aminoglycoside resistance phenotype and respective genetic resistance determinants was evaluated in 243 Salmonella strains isolated within 1948-2010 and stored in the Culture Collection of the Russian State Research Institute for Control, Standardization and Certification of Veterinary Preparations (Moscow). The Salmonella strains showed resistance to streptomycin and gentamicin in 3.7% (n = 9) and 0.8% (n = 2) of the isolates respectively. Intermediate resistance to streptomycin was recorded in 9.9% (n = 24) of the isolates. To detect the genes responsible for the aminoglycoside

Staphylococcus aureus is capable of becoming resistant to all classes of antibiotics clinically available and resistance can develop through de novo mutations in chromosomal genes or through acquisition of horizontally transferred resistance determinants. This review covers the most important antibiotics available for treatment of S. aureus infections and a special emphasis is dedicated to the current knowledge of the wide variety of resistance mechanisms that S. aureus employ to withstand antibiotics. Since resistance development has been inevitable for all currently available antibiotics, ne

Natural sweet potato transgene Ib-rolB/C enhances abiotic and biotic stress tolerance through coordinated regulation of ROS signaling, antioxidant defense, immune activation, and secondary metabolism. Horizontal gene transfer from Agrobacterium has contributed to plant genome evolution, yet the physiological roles of naturally integrated T-DNA genes remain poorly understood. Cultivated sweet potato (Ipomoea batatas) contains two cellular T-DNA regions, including the IbT-DNA2 locus harboring the naturally acquired gene Ib-rolB/C. Here, we investigated the stress-responsive expression and functi

Plant genomes exhibit extensive structural diversity generated by large-scale genomic alterations, collectively known as structural variations (SVs). Unlike single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) and small insertions/deletions (indels), SVs can reshape genome architecture through changes in sequence content, gene dosage, regulatory landscapes, and chromosome organization. Recent advances in long-read sequencing (LRS), pan-genome construction, and multi-omics technologies have greatly expanded our ability to identify and interpret SVs across plant species. In this review, we summarize recent pr

Mosaic penA alleles formed through horizontal gene transfer (HGT) have been instrumental to the rising incidence of ceftriaxone-resistant gonococcal infections. Although interspecies HGT of regions of the penA gene between Neisseria gonorrhoeae and commensal Neisseria species has been described, knowledge concerning which species are the most common contributors to mosaic penA alleles is limited, with most studies examining only a small number of alleles. Here, we investigated the origins of recombinant penA alleles through in silico analyses that incorporated 1700 penA alleles from 35 513 Nei

This study quantified an integron gene intI1 and 19 antibiotic resistance genes(ARGs) to identify the ARGs pollution characteristics in 11 drinking water reservoirs of central China. The results indicated that the ARGs abundance did not change significantly over time in the studied reservoir waterbodies. Tetracycline, sulfonamide, and β-lactam ARGs were dominant. The high abundance and detection rate of two sulfonamide ARGs(sul1 and sul2) suggested that they were the predominant ARGs. No polymyxin resistance genes(mcr-1) were detected, which indicated that the antibiotic restriction policy of
