Northern watersheds are facing rapid hydroclimatic reorganization driven by climate warming, glacier retreat, and intensifying land use. These changes are altering the distribution and accessibility of aquatic habitats, creating both risks and opportunities for cold-adapted species such as Pacific salmon (Oncorhynchus spp.). Effective responses require monitoring approaches capable of detecting contemporary habitat use, as well as emerging or intermittent occupancy in remote and rapidly changing landscapes where conventional monitoring is constrained. Here, we evaluated a species-targeted, qua

Riverbed mining exerts significant pressure on Himalayan river systems, yet its influence on trace metal dynamics in sediments remains poorly understood across elevation gradients. This study quantifies the concentration and ecological risk of six trace metals Cr, Ni, Co, Cu, Zn, and Pb in surface sediments from the Chandra River (Upper Himalayas), Beas River (Middle Himalayas), and Chakki Khad (Lower Himalayas), Himachal Pradesh, India. Ten surface sediment samples were collected from each river and evaluated using pollution indices (Igeo, PINemerow, PLI, PERI, MERMQ, and MEC), sediment quali

Rare earth elements (REEs), or lanthanides, are naturally occurring elements, whose demand has surged in recent years, driven by their use in green energy, electronics, and medical technologies. Despite their expanding applications, knowledge on REEs pollution, bioaccumulation patterns, and environmental dynamics in marine ecosystems remains limited, and regulatory thresholds are still lacking. This study investigates the distribution and bioaccumulation of REEs along the Mediterranean coasts, encompassing the Tyrrhenian, Ionian, and Adriatic Seas. Juvenile and adult individuals of the edible

Lake sediments represent a typical reservoir of antibiotic resistance genes (ARGs), an emerging contaminant. As a key nutrient for sediment microorganisms, elevated sulfate levels can profoundly influence sulfur cycling and related microbial processes. However, the impact of sulfate loads on the profiles of ARGs in lake sediments remains poorly understood. This study utilized a microcosm experiment to examine how sulfate addition at various concentrations (200, 400, and 600 mg/kg dry weight) affects the sediment resistome, via metagenomic analysis. Sulfate addition significantly increased sedi

The Matagorda Bay system has suffered a long-term decline in benthic abundance, biomass, and diversity since the 1980's. This study examined sediment contamination to determine if legacy pollutants are degrading sediment quality and are a possible cause for ecosystem degradation. Degradation can be indicated by a decline in benthic integrity (i.e., diversity), decreased survival rates of organisms exposed to sediment, and sediment chemical contaminant concentrations over threshold limits. These methods form the Sediment Quality Triad to assess environmental effects. There were no contaminant c

The aim of the study was to assess the effectiveness of using peat (P) and lime (L) to immobilise metals and reduce salinity in contaminated harbour sediments (BS), in order to aid remediation. The contaminated BS1 and the uncontaminated BS2 were mixed with P and L in the following proportions: 60% BS and 40% P; 60% BS, 20% P and 20% L; 60% BS and 40% L. Greater effectiveness was found for lime than for peat. In mixtures with lime, the proportion of metals in the residual fraction increased more frequently. Both additives were effective in reducing the mobile fraction (F1) of metals. Only the

Shallow lakes in arid and semi-arid regions are vulnerable to hydrological fluctuations and nutrient loading. However, the composition and functional traits of microbial communities and their roles in mediating internal nutrient cycling across the water column and sediments remain poorly understood. Here, we applied an integrated metagenomic framework to investigate microbial community structure and metabolic potential in Wuliangsuhai Lake, a typical eutrophic shallow lake in the Yellow River Basin. Read-based taxonomic profiling revealed pronounced habitat-driven community differentiation, wi

Artificial wrecks (AWs), which are intentionally submerged structures to promote marine biodiversity and support recreational diving, have gained increasing prominence on a global scale. Nevertheless, concerns regarding their environmental safety persist, especially in regions where regulatory oversight is limited. This study examines the ecological and human health risks posed by two artificial wrecks ("Alaybey" and "9 Eylül") deployed in the Karaburun Peninsula, Northeast Mediterranean, Türkiye, compared to a no-wreck site (Aslan Kayası). Despite rigorous pre-sinking protocols to remove fuel

In methanogenic communities, two main pathways drive methanogenesis: acetoclastic methanogenesis, which converts acetate into CH4 and CO2, and hydrogenotrophic methanogenesis, which reduces CO2 with H2 to CH4. Under high-pH conditions, a shift in dominance from acetoclastic to hydrogenotrophic methanogenesis is often observed. The goal of this work was to identify the pH tipping point for this metabolic shift and to elucidate the influence of alkalinity on this transition in a haloalkaliphilic methanogenic community enriched from anaerobic soda lake sediments. To this end, a haloalkaliphilic m

The sandy and coarse sand area in northern Shaanxi is the main source of Yellow River sediment and an ecologically fragile zone. Accurately assessing its carbon storage dynamic and economic value is of great significance for consolidating and enhancing carbon sequestration capacity of regional ecosystems, serving ecological protection and high-quality development of the Yellow River Basin. Based on land use data from 2003, 2013, and 2023, and as well as 12 driving factors such as rainfall, elevation, and population, we simulated the land use under three scenarios (natural development, soil and

Pharmaceutical pollution is escalating worldwide due to increasing drug consumption and limited removal in conventional wastewater treatment plants. While low concentrations of SSRIs can already disrupt endocrine and behavioural functions in aquatic species, the long-term effects of sediment-associated SSRIs remain largely unexplored. In this study, we examined multigenerational effects of sediment-associated sertraline (SER; 0-15.6 μg/g dry weight sediment) on the polychaete Capitella teleta across three generations (f0-f2), assessing reproductive traits in all generations and behaviour only

Mercury (Hg) and methylmercury (MeHg) in freshwater food webs is a worldwide concern, commonly interpreted through broad geographic gradients derived largely from Northern Hemisphere datasets, yet controls on dynamics in Southern Hemisphere rivers remain poorly resolved. Our multi-basin, multi-matrix investigation of total mercury (THg) and MeHg across a ∼3700 km Chilean latitudinal gradient using integrated abiotic (water, sediments) and biotic (benthic macroinvertebrates, trout) matrices and stable isotopes (δ13C, δ15N), alongside environmental and land use variables. Sediment THg ranged fro

Understanding how inorganic mercury (IHg, primarily Hg(II)) and methylmercury (MeHg, primarily monomethylmercury) transform and cycle in coastal food webs is essential for evaluating Hg exposure risks, yet relevant species-specific mercury (Hg) isotope studies remain scarce. Here, we optimized a purge-trap method that enabled efficient separation and isotopic analysis of IHg and MeHg in marine organisms. Applying this method to surface and benthic organisms collected from the Bohai Sea in winter and summer, we reveal distinct seasonal and habitat-specific Hg dynamics. Surface organisms primari

Malathion is one of the most widely used organophosphate insecticides, and its environmental fate is strongly influenced by microbial transformation in the water column and sediments. This review synthesizes current knowledge of the enzymatic and metabolic pathways that govern the persistence of malathion in aquatic, sedimentary, and wastewater systems. Members of the genera Pseudomonas, Bacillus, Acinetobacter, Rhodococcus, Micrococcus, and several other commonly studied taxa produce enzymes such as carboxylesterases and hydrolases that cleave the carboxyl ester linkage. The major metabolites

Marine microbial metabolites have long served as valuable sources for drug discovery, exhibiting diverse biological activities, including antiparasitic, antimicrobial, and antiviral effects. Chagas disease (CD), a neglected tropical disease caused by Trypanosoma cruzi, affects approximately 8 million people worldwide. Currently, only two drugs are available for treatment, both associated with significant toxicity, underscoring the urgent need for new therapeutic alternatives. In this context, and considering the remarkable chemical diversity of marine bacteria, the present study investigated t

The deep-sea environment poses significant metabolic challenges to microorganisms, rendering the bioremediation of oil pollution even more formidable. Quorum sensing (QS) signals are known to assist microbiota in maintaining their function and stability under toxic contaminants. Dimethylsulfoniopropionate (DMSP) is an ideal cryoprotectant and stress protectant, enhancing microbial resilience in extreme environments. Given these, the comprehensive investigations on the application of QS bacteria and DMSP in restoring oil-polluted sediment were conducted at deep-sea microcosm over two months. Fi

Organophosphate esters (OPEs) are ubiquitous endocrine-disrupting chemicals that have been frequently detected in metropolitan river systems. However, the distinctions in OPE sources and water-sediment dynamics between urban and suburban rivers remain poorly understood. In this study, the occurrence of 5 alkyl organophosphate esters (alkyl-OPEs), 4 aryl organophosphate esters (aryl-OPEs), 3 chlorinated organophosphate esters (Cl-OPEs), and 2 oligomeric organophosphate esters (oligomeric-OPEs) was investigated in water and sediments of 4 urban rivers and 2 suburban rivers in the Pearl River Bas

This article focuses on the necessity to enhance the current understanding of the accumulation and fate of pesticides and pharmaceuticals (emerging pollutants) in abandoned meanders and adjacent river channel bars. The primary objective of this study is to conduct a comparative analysis of pollutant concentrations in both settings and to identify the driving factors of their deposition. The studied sites are situated within two distinct catchments of the Morava and Odra rivers in the eastern part of the Czech Republic. The most prevalent pesticides were identified as propiconazole, metazachlor
