Angiofibrolipoma of the retromolar pad region: case report.

Angiofibrolipoma is a rare histopathological variant of lipoma, characterized by mature adipocytes, blood vessels and dense collagenous tissue. It is seldom seen in the oral and maxillofacial region. Diagnosis of angiofibrolipoma is only possible based on its histopathological features. This report presents the case of a 63-year-old male patient with the complaint of a polyp-like mass, felt from the left retromolar pad region. The mass was found as a small prominent lesion that had grown gradually for 1.5 years. Our differential diagnosis was irritation fibroma and fibrous pyogenic granuloma.

Primary extra-nodal non-Hodgkin's lymphoma of gingiva: A diagnostic dilemma.

Primary non-Hodgkin's lymphoma (NHL) is a rare entity. When it does occur, mandibular NHL typically manifests similar to an odontogenic pathology. This results in delayed diagnosis and treatment. We present a 50-year-old female who was erroneously treated for a pyogenic granuloma several months before the correct diagnosis of extranodal primary NHL of the oral cavity was made. Fortunately, the solitary bony lymphoma had not disseminated and management by chemo-radiation allowed for disease eradication and new post-treatment bone formation. The purpose of this report is to describe a rare case

Umbilical endometriosis: report of a case and its dermoscopic features.

Cutaneous endometriosis is a rare manifestation of endometriosis, representing 0.5% to 1% of all endometriosis cases. It can be divided into primary and secondary, when appearing spontaneously or after a surgical procedure, when it is mostly found on surgical scar tissue. Some etiologies were proposed, but none of them could entirely explain the appearance of the tumor. Differential diagnosis includes melanoma, metastatic nodule, keloid and pyogenic granuloma. Dermoscopic features are not yet well established, but there are some characteristics that suggest the diagnosis. Treatment is surgical

Cerebral aspergillosis presenting as a mass lesion.

Fungal infections of the central nervous system (CNS) are almost always a surprising finding. Their presentation is usually subtle, often without any diagnostic characteristics, and they are frequently mistaken for pyogenic abscesses, or brain tumors. Aspergillosis of the central nervous system is an uncommon infection, mainly occurring in immunocompromised patients. It may present in several forms, including meningitis, mycotic aneurysms, infarcts and a tumoral form. We report an intracranial granuloma due to Aspergillus fumigatus involving the anterior cranial fossa and the frontal lobe. The

Disseminated lobular capillary hemangioma: two case reports.

Lobular capillary hemangioma, also known as pyogenic granuloma, is a common, solitary, benign neoplasm of the skin and mucous membranes. The etiology of this lesion remains unknown. Lobular capillary hemangioma can present rarely in a disseminated form, usually associated with other disorders. Two patients, aged 17 and 33, were admitted to the dermatology clinic with disseminated lobular capillary hemangiomas which appeared suddenly. There was no history of trauma in either case. The histopathology of the lesions was consistent with lobular capillary hemangioma. No associated disorders were fo

Laser applications for benign oral lesions.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVE: Different subspecialists treat benign intraoral lesions using various approaches including surgical excision, medical therapy, sclerotherapy, and laser photocoagulation. The goal of this study was to establish whether lasers could effectively target and destroy oral lesions containing endogenous chromophores, while minimizing injury to unaffected adjacent tissues and critical structures. MATERIALS AND METHODS: This retrospective study involved 26 cases of benign oral lesions, both vascular and pigmented, which were addressed by means of selective laser treatment. Pat

Recalcitrant trametinib-induced paronychia treated successfully with topical timolol in a pediatric patient.

Paronychia has been described as a side effect in patients undergoing treatment with MEK (mitogen activated protein kinase enzyme) inhibitors. It is usually a recurrent condition that can have a significant impact in the quality of life. Topical beta blocker treatment has been described as an effective therapy in antineoplastic-induced pyogenic granulomas and in antineoplastic-induced paronychia. We describe the first case treated with topical timolol for a trametinib-induced paronychia in a pediatric patient that allowed to continue the third line antineoplastic therapy for his glioma.

Longitudinal melanonychia induced by capecitabine.

Capecitabine is an oral prodrug of 5-fluorouracil (5-FU), used in the treatment of metastatic colon and breast cancers; it is also under investigation for use in gastric cancers. Multiple cutaneous adverse effects have been reported with the use of capecitabine including acral erythema, pyogenic granulomas, inflammation of actinic keratoses, cutaneous and mucosal hyperpigmentation, leopardlike vitiligo, radiation recall, onycholysis, onychomadesis, and subacute cutaneous lupus. To our knowledge, no cases of capecitabine-induced linear melanonychia have been reported to date in the literature.

[The most common benign cutaneous neoplasms of vascular, muscular, and adipose tissue and their treatment].

Benign cutaneous vascular and cutaneous neoplasms arising from muscle or adipose tissue are rare. Their definition and classification are still controversially discussed. Histopathological and immunohistochemical studies, together with the new genetic tests, contribute significantly to the correct description of the various benign neoplasms of cutaneous origin. Clarifying whether a lesion is benign is fundamental for prognosis and therapeutic management. In most cases, surgical excision is the treatment of choice. Dermatologists should be familiar with the classifications of the most common be

Clear Cell Tumor With MITF::CREM Fusion: A Rare Case Report of a Newly Described Entity.

The increasing application of molecular diagnostics in pathology has enabled the identification of novel tumor entities, including clear cell tumor with MITF::CREM translocation, as recognized in the 5th edition of the WHO Classification of Tumours. We describe a case involving a 2-year-old boy with a left scalp lesion, initially suspected clinically to represent a pyogenic granuloma. Histopathological assessment, corroborated by molecular analysis, established the diagnosis of clear cell tumor with MITF::CREM translocation. This case emphasizes the need to consider rare entities in the differ

Cutaneous vascular tumors: an updated review.

Cutaneous vascular tumors constitute a heterogeneous group of entities that share overlapping morphologic and immunohistochemical features, which can be diagnostically challenging for pathologists and dermatopathologists. Our understanding and knowledge of vascular neoplasms have improved over time, resulting in both a refinement of their classification by the International Society for the Study of Vascular Anomalies (ISSVA) and an improvement in the accurate diagnosis and clinical management of vascular neoplasms. This review article aims to summarize the updated clinical, histopathological,

Peripheral Ameloblastoma of Upper Gingiva in a Patient with Port-Wine Stain.

The peripheral ameloblastoma (PA), also known as extraosseous ameloblastoma, is a rare soft tissue tumor of odontogenic origin, accounting for 1-5% of all ameloblastoma. In some cases, saucerization of underlying bone is the only radiological evidence of this lesion, and PA has identical histological characteristics of intraosseous ameloblastoma. However, it is slow growing, less aggressive, and less invasive in nature. The present report describes a rare case of PA in the maxillary labial gingiva of a 37-year-old man with port-wine vascular malformation. PA was clinically diagnosed as a pyoge

Renal cell carcinoma metastatic to the maxillary gingiva: A case report and review of the literature.

Tumor metastasis to the oral cavity is rare and is usually an indication of late-stage disease and poor prognosis. While, there are reports of renal cell carcinoma (RCC) metastatic to oral cavity, vast majority of them are to the jaw. Herein, we present a case of a 78-year-old woman with RCC metastasis limited to the oral soft tissue without any bone involvement. As the lesion solely involved maxillary gingiva, it clinically mimicked that of a pyogenic granuloma, which is a reactive, nonneoplastic condition. This case was further complicated as the patient was unaware of primary cancer and app

Vascular tumours in infants. Part I: benign vascular tumours other than infantile haemangioma.

Vascular anomalies can be subdivided into vascular tumours and vascular malformations (VMs). While most VMs are present at birth and do not exhibit significant postnatal growth, vascular tumours are characterized by their dynamics of growth and (sometimes) spontaneous regression. This review focuses on benign vascular tumours other than infantile haemangiomas (IHs), namely pyogenic granuloma, eruptive pseudoangiomatosis, glomangioma, rapidly involuting and noninvoluting congenital haemangioma, verrucous haemangioma and spindle cell haemangioma. While some of them bear clinical resemblance to I

If it is not healing, do worry about it!

We present the case of a 44-year-old patient who crushed her ring finger in a door 4 months earlier. She was treated in the community for her chronic fingertip wound/pyogenic granuloma. As the lesion was not healing with regular wound management she was eventually referred to secondary care for an opinion. She underwent immediate excisional biopsy with safe margins for tissue diagnosis and had histological confirmation of an advanced malignant melanoma. The staging head, neck, thorax, abdomen and pelvic CT showed lymph node enlargement and widespread metastatic lesions. Our case shows how if h

Case series: laser treatments for soft tissue problems in children.

BACKGROUND: Many soft tissue pathologies in children can be treated by paediatric dentists. New technologies such as laser surgery enable simpler treatments to be carried out than with conventional techniques. CASE REPORTS: A case series of 7 children aged 6 to 14 years old were treated for various soft tissue problems including crown lengthening, exposure of an unerupted molar, lingual and maxillary fraenectomies, gingivectomy, excision of a pyogenic granuloma and for a pulpotomy. TREATMENTS: All children were treated using a Er,Cr:YSGG laser for removal of appropriate soft tissues. FOLLOWU

Epulis granulomatosa as an oral manifestation of Klippel-Trénaunay syndrome.

The Klippel-Trénaunay syndrome (KTS) was first described by Klippel and Trénaunay in 1900. It is characterized by the triad of hemihypertrophy of soft and hard tissue, naevus flammeus and venous varicosity in the affected area. Though all oral tissues may be affected, only 5% of KTS show manifestations in the head and neck region. Only three cases are described with an oral manifestation, showing gingival overgrowth clinically and histologically corresponding to a pyogenic granuloma. It is still uncertain whether the combination of gingival fibromatosis and KTS is significant or coincidental.
