Barriers to Diabetic Ketoacidosis Prevention in Adults With Type 1 Diabetes: Implications for Education and Implementation of New Monitoring Technologies.

OBJECTIVES: Diabetic ketoacidosis (DKA) is a major acute complication whose prevention depends on patient knowledge and self-management skills. In this study we aimed to identify the patient-level barriers to effective DKA prevention behaviours. METHODS: We conducted a qualitative study using a behavioural science lens and implementation science methods involving 3 independent, sequential focus groups. Informed by the Action, Actor, Context, Target, Time framework, 3 targeted behaviours were defined: testing ketone levels; acting upon ketone results; and seeking emergency medical care. Deduct

Clinical Implementation of RHD NIPT in a Tertiary Obstetric Centre in Western Australia.

A clinically robust RHD non-invasive prenatal test (RHD NIPT) was developed to predict fetal RhD status and optimise RhD Ig use for RhD-negative pregnant women in Western Australia. Using rigorous methodology and stakeholder engagement we created clinical guidelines and educational support tools, such as reference guides and consumer brochures, to enhance test uptake. Six months post-implementation, 90% of healthcare professionals surveyed felt confident offering the test, with 87% having ordered it. A guideline review of 50 women confirmed they all received appropriate RhD Ig use. This succes

Breaking barriers: A qualitative study exploring the social and cultural factors that influence HIV awareness and uptake of HIV prevention among women of African and Caribbean heritage in England.

BACKGROUND: There have been impressive advancements made in preventing and treating HIV. However, the impacts have not been experienced equally across demographics in England. African born persons, in particular women of Black African ethnicity, continue to be disproportionately affected by HIV. HIV prevention campaigns have often overlooked social, cultural, and structural factors that shape access to HIV prevention. OBJECTIVES: This paper explores how women of African and Caribbean heritage understand HIV within their social networks, and how they perceive HIV and sexual health services. Th

A protocol for developing a digital-based education and self-screening model to enhance HIV knowledge, self-awareness, and testing uptake among adolescents in Yogyakarta, Indonesia.

Adolescents remain a critical population in the global human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) epidemic, particularly in low - and middle-income countries such as Indonesia, where testing uptake and awareness among youth remain low. This study aimed to develop and evaluate a peer-supported, digital-based HIV education and self-screening intervention tailored for adolescents in Yogyakarta. By integrating digital technology with peer-led support, the intervention addresses stigma-related barriers, limited access to youth-friendly services, and low health literacy. Using a mixed-methods research and d

Are we doing enough to control infection risk in Australian small animal veterinary practice? Findings from a mixed methods study.

BACKGROUND: Managing risk effectively within small animal veterinary practice is integral for staff, patient and client safety. Veterinary personnel are exposed to many risks, including bites, scratches, sharps injuries and exposure to zoonotic diseases and multi-resistant organisms. Patients may also be exposed to healthcare-associated infections, including multi-resistant organisms. While veterinary owners/managers have a duty of care under legislated Workplace Health and Safety requirements, all staff have a responsibility to contribute to assessing and minimizing risk. The application of s

A thematic analysis of MDMA-related harm and harm reduction experiences and knowledge in Aotearoa New Zealand.

BACKGROUND: Methylenedioxymethamphetamine (MDMA) is a popular drug worldwide and use is prevalent in Aotearoa New Zealand. Although associated with some significant harms, including fatalities, MDMA is ultimately less harmful than other commonly consumed drugs. We aimed to expand the understanding of MDMA harm and harm reduction strategies from a consumer perspective so that national harm reduction efforts can be better informed. METHODS: We conducted 14 semi-structured focus group discussions including 60 people (aged 18-67, median = 21) who use MDMA in the Southern region of Aotearoa New Ze

Community Perceptions of Blackfly Nuisance and Acceptability of the "Slash and Clear" Vector Control Approach in the Ntui Health District of Cameroon: A Qualitative Study.

Besides being vectors of the onchocerciasis parasite, blackflies are a source of nuisance in onchocerciasis-endemic communities. We investigated the experience of residents in the Ntui Health District (Cameroon) regarding blackfly nuisance and assessed their perceptions of a novel "Slash and Clear" (S&C) intervention for blackfly control. Focus group discussions were conducted before and after S&C implementation (respectively, in February 2022 and December 2023). Blackflies were known to emerge from the river areas and cause disease. To prevent blackfly bites, the population often covered thei

Influence of peer discussions on trust in recommendations for prevention of mother-to-child transmission (PMTCT) of HIV.

BACKGROUND: Mothers attending prevention of mother-to-child transmission (PMTCT) of HIV clinics seem to lack knowledge on many aspects of PMTCT, among which is breastfeeding. Breastfeeding recommendations in PMTCT have changed several times over the years leaving some confused and doubtful of what is currently recommended. One method shown to help improve their knowledge and acceptance of PMTCT recommendations is the use of peer educators. We sought to determine if mothers engage in discussions with other mothers during clinics and how these engagements influence trust in PMTCT recommendations

"A child may be tall but stunted." Meanings attached to childhood height in Tanzania.

Stunting affects large numbers of under-fives in Tanzania. But do caretakers of under-fives recognize height as a marker of child growth? What meanings do they attach to linear growth? An ethnographic study using cultural schemas theory was conducted in a rural community in Southeastern Tanzania to investigate caregivers' conceptualizations of child height in relation to growth and the meanings attached to short stature. Data for the study were collected through 19 focus group discussions, 30 in-depth interviews, and five key informant interviews with caregivers of under-fives, including mothe

Awareness of obstetric warning signs in Ecuador: a cross-sectional study.

OBJECTIVE: In Ecuador, the reported maternal death rate was 45.71 per 100,000 live births in 2013. This may be partly due to a lack of maternal knowledge of obstetric warning signs during pregnancy, delivery and the post-partum period. This study sought to evaluate awareness of obstetric warning signs among pregnant women in relation to individual demographic and area-level socio-economic indicators. STUDY DESIGN: We conducted a cross-sectional analysis of data collected by Ecuador's Ministry of Health at the conclusion of a national maternal health campaign (2014-2015). A nationally represen
