Yaws is a re-emerging disease in Papua New Guinea. A resurgence of yaws is documented in the periurban settlements around Port Moresby. A total of 494 cases were identified from April 2000 to September 2001. The age distribution ranged from 2 years to adult (median 9 years). Presenting symptoms were adequately recorded in 286 cases (58%). Of these, 42% presented with raised painless sores, 47% with bone/joint symptoms only and 11% with both sores and bone/joint symptoms. The effect of oxytocin (1 mg/kg s.c) on gastric acid secretion and on different experimentally induced gastric and duodenal ulcers was studied. The acute gastric ulcer models used were pylorus ligation, indomethacin, ethanol and histamine induced acute gastric ulcers. OBJECTIVE: To investigate the effects of salicylate on noise-induced hearing loss (NIHL) in guinea pigs.
METHODS: The animals were allocated into four groups (salicylate + noise, saline + noise, noise only and salicylate only) and were exposed to a 4 kHz octave band noise at 105 dB SPL for 2 hours for 5 consecutive days. Laser Doppler flowmetry was used to assess cochlear blood flow (CoBF) in guinea pigs with experimental endolymphatic hydrops following intravenous infusion of 5 types of drugs: 50% glycerol, 70% isosorbide, 20% mannitol, 7% sodium bicarbonate, and 1% diphenidol.
