Knowledge and opinions about tissue donation and transplantation among Polish students and physicians.

The idea of transplantation seems to be commonly identified by lay and professional people only with transplantation of vascularized organs like kidney or heart. The question arises whether there is any awareness of tissue transplantation among the public. A survey was therefore undertaken to assess awareness of and approaches to tissue donation and transplantation among selected social groups. A questionnaire on donation and transplantation issues was administered to respondents from the following groups: secondary school students, non-medical university students, medical university students,

Organic foods contain higher levels of certain nutrients, lower levels of pesticides, and may provide health benefits for the consumer.

The multi-billion dollar organic food industry is fueled by consumer perception that organic food is healthier (greater nutritional value and fewer toxic chemicals). Studies of the nutrient content in organic foods vary in results due to differences in the ground cover and maturity of the organic farming operation. Nutrient content also varies from farmer to farmer and year to year. However, reviews of multiple studies show that organic varieties do provide significantly greater levels of vitamin C, iron, magnesium, and phosphorus than non-organic varieties of the same foods. While being highe

Impact of attitudes and beliefs regarding African American sexual behavior on STD prevention and control in African American communities: unintended consequences.

Compared to whites, blacks experience significant health disparities for sexually transmitted diseases, particularly in the rates of chlamydia, gonorrhea, and syphilis. To develop more effective interventions to control and prevent STDs, public health practitioners should better understand and respond to factors that facilitate sexual risk-taking behaviors and impede access to STD health care and make use of factors that promote sexual health. Legacies of slavery, racism, and economic or class discrimination leave many blacks suspicious of interventions aimed at improving the welfare of their

Factors influencing implementation of an Alzheimer's disease blood test among UK old age psychiatrists: mixed-methods study using the theoretical domains framework.

INTRODUCTION: Only 6% of UK memory services meet Alzheimer's disease (AD) biomarker access guidelines, limiting psychiatrists' experience. Emerging AD blood biomarker (BBM) tests will potentially expand access. Exploring implementation barriers and enablers a priori can inform rollout strategies. This study examined current clinical practises, barriers and enablers to implementation and potential interventions to support implementation. METHODS: In November 2024, Royal College of Psychiatrists Old Age Psychiatry Faculty members (n = 172) participated in an online survey and four focus groups

Evidence-based practice among physiotherapists in India: a nationwide survey of knowledge, attitude, and implementation behavior.

BACKGROUND: Physiotherapy services are often integrated within the broader healthcare system in India. Unlike in developed countries, physiotherapy is still limited to indirect access and needs a referral from other healthcare providers, which potentially limits physiotherapists. The purpose of this study was to explore the knowledge or skill, attitude, and behavior towards the implementation of evidence-based practice (EBP) in physiotherapy care. In addition, the physiotherapist's perception of barriers in the implementation of EBP was inquired. METHODS: A cross-sectional study was conducted

Does patient reluctance towards exposure and psychologists' attitudes about evidence based practice influence treatment recommendations for panic disorder? An experimental investigation.

This study examined the effects of patient reluctance towards exposure on practitioners' subsequent treatment recommendations. Participants (N=236) were doctoral level psychologists who received a vignette of a patient with panic disorder, which either did (experimental group) or did not (control group) mention patient reluctance towards exposure. Evidence Based Practice (EBP) attitudes were also assessed and taken into account. A significant main effect of reluctance, averaged across all levels of EBP attitudes, and theoretical orientations was obtained (OR=2.85, 95% CI=[1.51, 5.39], p=0.001,

Attitudes and knowledge of medical practitioners to hereditary cancer clinics and cancer genetic testing.

Genetic testing for susceptibility for common cancers is widely available. Thus, doctors have a role in identifying and referring patients who would benefit from a consultation with a specialist in genetics. This study aims to assess doctors' referral rates, knowledge and attitudes towards cancer genetic testing, broken down by specialty (gastrointestinal, breast/ovarian, other specialties and General Practitioners-GPs). A 4-page questionnaire was mailed out to the GPs of all patients seen in 2012 in the Hereditary Cancer Clinic of St. Vincent's Hospital Sydney (n = 128) and all the specialist

Technical competency in flexible sigmoidoscopy.

BACKGROUND: Family practice residencies offer training in flexible sigmoidoscopy; however, there are no objective recommendations for determining competency in learners. We describe a longitudinal study designed to determine the mean procedure time and depth of insertion for family practice residents. METHODS: During a 21-month period, data were collected for 421 patients undergoing flexible sigmoidoscopy. Second- or third-year family medicine residents supervised by family medicine faculty did all procedures. The data were analyzed with simple descriptive statistics, t test, and linear and l

Confusion Arising from too many Messages in Health Awareness Campaigns in Rural Communities in Malawi.

Health talks and community engagement are central to many public health programmes, yet their effectiveness is shaped by complex social, cultural, and informational contexts. Even well-designed interventions can be undermined when communities receive overlapping health messages, leading to confusion, competing interpretations, or message fatigue. Drawing on experiences from a breast health and breast cancer awareness campaign delivered through the Akazi Project in rural Malawi, this commentary reflects on lessons from community engagement and their implications for health communication. Knowledge, attitudes, behaviors, and consequences of geogenic fluoride exposure on oral and dental health in Nakuru, Kenya.

BACKGROUND: Although efforts to improve household water security have significantly advanced progress toward Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) 6, environmental hazards, such as geogenic fluoride contamination, continue to threaten the lives of billions of people who rely on unimproved water sources. While awareness of the harmful effects of high fluoride levels in drinking water exists, research on knowledge, attitudes, and behaviors related to fluoride and fluorosis remains limited, particularly among households in areas with naturally elevated fluoride levels. METHODS: We therefore examine

Assessing police officers' attitudes and legal knowledge on behaviors that impact HIV transmission among people who inject drugs.

BACKGROUND: Policing practices such as syringe confiscation and arrest can act as important social-structural drivers of HIV risk among people who inject drugs (PWID). However, police referral to treatment and other services may improve the health of PWID. Little is known about the role of modifiable attitudinal and knowledge factors in shaping officer behavior. Using baseline findings from a police education program (PEP), we assessed relationships between drug policy knowledge and attitudes towards public health interventions with self-reported syringe confiscation, drug arrest, and service

The Impact of Interprofessional Harm Reduction Trainings on Clinician and Student Knowledge, Attitude, and Stigma.

BACKGROUND: Harm reduction is a grassroots, practical set of strategies to mitigate the negative consequences of drug use, and it is a movement that acknowledges that people may not stop using drugs. Clinician stigma remains a barrier to implementation of harm reduction practices, which further disempowers and jeopardizes the health of people who use drugs (PWUD). Our study objective was to understand the impact of interprofessional harm reduction trainings on health professions students' and clinicians' knowledge and stigma toward PWUD. METHODS: Harm reduction outreach specialists, faculty p

Parental opinions regarding treatment for social anxiety disorder in youth.

This study surveyed parents' opinions about treatment for childhood social anxiety disorder and assessed variables that may affect treatment acceptability. A 20-item survey assessing treatment attitudes and a semistructured interview were administered to 190 parents of children (8-17 years) who were randomly selected from a pediatric primary care setting. An exploratory factor analysis of the treatment attitudes survey yielded four factors: medication acceptability, counseling acceptability, counseling feasibility, and general beliefs about social anxiety treatment. Findings revealed that pare
