OBJECTIVES: Turner syndrome is the most common sex chromosome disorder in females, and is caused by a total or partial deletion of one X chromosome. The purpose of this study was to describe the auditory phenotype in a large group of individuals with Turner Syndrome, with analysis focusing on hearing loss and age, as well as the phenotypic relationship to karyotype variation.
DESIGN: Our analysis of auditory function was part of a large-scale, natural history study in which clinical and genetic factors related to Turner syndrome were examined. This ascertainment avoids the bias inherent in st

The aim of this study was to evaluate the efficacy of an intraoperative monitoring hearing preservation strategy that includes simultaneous recordings of an auditory brainstem response (ABR) and non-invasive electrocochleography (ECochG). The combined ABR and tympanic membrane (TM) ECochG testing was performed in 74 patients undergoing acoustic neuroma (AN) surgery. In addition, EMG recordings were conducted to monitor the facial nerve function. Hearing was preserved in 19 of the 30 patients with residual hearing prior to surgery (63%), and facial nerve function was maintained in 89% of the pa

Large-scale deletions of mitochondrial DNA (mtDNA) have been associated with aging and disease in post-mitotic tissues. These post-mitotic tissues, including skeletal muscle, heart and brain, are heavily dependent on intact functional mitochondria. The cochlear tissues are known to contain an abundance of mitochondria. This observation stimulated a search for mtDNA deletions in the cochlea and its elements using a sensitive nested PCR methodology and long range PCR to explain the functional deficits observed in age-related hearing loss. The presence of the so-called "common" deletion (CD) was

The test performance of a wideband acoustic transfer function (ATF) test and 226-Hz tympanometry was assessed in predicting the presence of conductive hearing loss, based on an air-bone gap of 20 dB or more. Two ATF tests were designed using an improved calibration method over a frequency range (0.25-8 kHz): an ambient-pressure test and a tympanometric test using an excess static pressure in the ear canal. Wideband responses were objectively classified using moment analyses of energy transmittance, which was a more appropriate test variable than energy reflectance. Subjects included adults and

BACKGROUND: Bone conduction hearing aids can be worn as noninvasive devices using a clip or soft band that exerts pressure on the skin, or they can be surgically implanted. ADHEAR (MED-EL GmbH, Innsbruck, Austria) is a novel noninvasive bone conduction hearing aid that is attached behind the ear using an adhesive adapter and does not exert pressure on the skin. ADHEAR is indicated for patients with conductive hearing loss and normal inner ear function. The aim of this study was to evaluate the achievable hearing improvement with ADHEAR.

Prader-Willi syndrome (PWS) is a genetic condition, predominantly of sporadic origin, associated with chromosomal abnormalities involving the long arm of chromosome 15, specifically the q11-13 region. Of note, the STRC gene, located on chromosome 15q15.3, is implicated in congenital sensorineural hearing loss, primarily affecting the inner hair cells of the cochlea, and typically results in mild to moderate hearing impairment. In our case, the patient presented with unilateral profound hearing loss, predominantly involving the neural component-a unique finding not previously documented in the

Dizziness and hearing loss are among the most common disabilities. Many forms of hereditary balance and hearing disorders are caused by abnormal development of stereocilia, mechanosensory organelles on the apical surface of hair cells in the inner ear. The deaf whirler mouse, a model of human Usher syndrome (manifested by hearing loss, dizziness, and blindness), has a recessive mutation in the whirlin gene, which renders hair cell stereocilia short and dysfunctional. In this study, wild-type whirlin cDNA was delivered to the inner ears of neonatal whirler mice using adeno-associated virus sero

Trauma to the inner ear in birds, due to acoustic overstimulation or ototoxic aminoglycosides, can lead to hair cell loss which is followed by regeneration of new hair cells. These processes are paralleled by hearing loss followed by significant functional recovery. After acoustic trauma, functional recovery is rapid and nearly complete. The early and major part of functional recovery after sound trauma occurs before regenerated hair cells become functional. Even very intense sound trauma causes loss of only a proportion of the hair cell population, mainly so-called short hair cells residing o

Local and privileged expression of dendritic proteins allows segregation of distinct functions in a single neuron but may represent one of the underlying mechanisms for early and insidious presentation of sensory neuropathy. Tangible characteristics of early hearing loss (HL) are defined in correlation with nascent hidden hearing loss (HHL) in humans and animal models. Despite the plethora of causes of HL, only two prevailing mechanisms for HHL have been identified, and in both cases, common structural deficits are implicated in inner hair cell synapses, and demyelination of the auditory nerve

Fourteen patients with hereditary motor and sensory neuropathy (HMSN), 12 of Type I and 2 of Type II, were assessed for auditory dysfunction. Five patients complained of hearing loss and all had pure-tone audiograms outside the normal range, while one patient who did not complain of hearing impairment also had an abnormal pure-tone audiogram. Assessment of loudness function, speech audiometry and brainstem auditory evoked potentials (BAEP) suggested that the hearing loss was the result of VIII nerve dysfunction, a conclusion supported by the abnormality of the electrocochleogram (ECochG) in on

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: Studies investigating the relationship between initial electrophysiological thresholds and subsequent behavioural hearing thresholds have demonstrated uncertainty as to whether initial results can provide an accurate estimation of an infant's functional hearing. This estimation must be accurate if a cochlear implant (CI) is to be considered before behavioural audiometry. This study aims to explore the variance between initial electrophysiological thresholds and subsequent behavioural hearing thresholds in infants to determine under which conditions electrophysiological resu

Hidden hearing loss (HHL), a recently described auditory neuropathy characterized by normal audiometric thresholds but reduced sound-evoked cochlear compound action potentials, has been proposed to contribute to hearing difficulty in noisy environments in people with normal hearing thresholds and has become a widespread complaint. While most studies on HHL pathogenesis have focused on inner hair cell (IHC) synaptopathy, we recently showed that transient auditory nerve (AN) demyelination also causes HHL in mice. To test the effect of myelinopathy on hearing in a clinically relevant model, we st

Active middle ear implants (AMEI) are implantable options for patients with sensorineural, conductive, or mixed hearing loss who are not good candidates for hearing aids. The aim of this study was to compare audiological, surgical, quality of life, and sound quality outcomes in adults <60 and ≥60 years receiving an AMEI. Twenty adult patients who underwent AMEI implantation were divided into two groups, <60 and ≥60 y. Preoperative tests included pure-tone average and speech discrimination score (SDS) at 65 dB for disyllabic words in quiet. Postoperative measures included AMEI-aided bone conduc

The stria vascularis (SV) in the cochlea generates and maintains the endocochlear potential, thereby playing a pivotal role in normal hearing. Knowing transcriptional profiles and gene regulatory networks of SV cell types establishes a basis for studying the mechanism underlying SV-related hearing loss. While we have previously characterized the expression profiles of major SV cell types in the adult mouse, transcriptional profiles of rare SV cell types remained elusive due to the limitation of cell capture in single-cell RNA-Seq. The role of these rare cell types in the homeostatic function o

OBJECTIVES: Otitis media with effusion (OME) is the presence of non-purulent inflammation in the middle ear. Hearing impairment is frequently associated with OME. Pure tone audiometry and speech audiometry are two of the most primarily utilised auditory assessments and provide valuable behavioural and functional estimation on hearing loss. This paper was designed to review and analyse the effects of the presence of OME on children's listening abilities.
DESIGN: A systematic and descriptive review.
STUDY SAMPLE: Twelve articles reporting frequency-specific pure tone thresholds and/or speech p

Recent studies suggest that the interaction between presbycusis and cognitive impairment may be partially explained by the cognitive-ear link. However, the underlying neurophysiological mechanisms remain largely unknown. In this study, we combined magnetic resonance spectroscopy (MRS) and resting-state functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) to investigate auditory gamma-aminobutyric acid (GABA) and glutamate (Glu) levels, intra- and inter-network functional connectivity, and their relationships with auditory and cognitive function in 51 presbycusis patients and 51 well-matched healthy co
