An immunoperoxidase technique with monoclonal antibodies for the identification of lymphocyte subsets and MHC Class II antigens was applied to oesophageal biopsies from two patients with herpetic oesophagitis. Oesophageal epithelial cells were found to express the MHC Class II antigen. The inflammatory infiltrate of the lamina propria was composed of both B lymphocytes and T lymphocytes.

Six patients with previous history of herpetic keratitis were seen during the 48 first hours after the out set of a conjunctivitis. Herpes simplex virus type 1 was isolated in all cases. Treated immediately with trifluorothymidine, they healed quickly without developing any corneal lesions. These data suggest the use of early antiviral treatment in patients with recurrent herpetic keratitis, even preventive therapy in at risk patients in well known predisposing conditions.

62 patients suffering from recurrent herpes simplex, with ten out of them showing postherpetic erythema multiforme, have been investigated with special reference to histocompatibility standardisation. In comparison with a control group (n = 170), our patients revealed a high and statistically significant level of HLA-B5 (p less than 0,01). Postherpetic erythema multiforme seems to be associated with HLA-A9.

Two distinct loci that confer resistance to acycloguanosine (acyclo-Guo) in herpes simplex virus types 1 have been identified. The first locus is the gene for the virus-specific thymidine kinase (TK). Amoung 57,117 routinely collected Papanicolaou smears from the female genital tract there were 90 slides (0.16%) from 85 patients on which a cytologic diagnosis of herpes simplex virus (HSV) infection was made.
