[Is it possible to individualize microvillous large-cell lymphoma among sinusoid lymphomas?].

Microvillous non-hodgkin lymphomas are large cell malignant lymphomas with a sinus growth pattern and the presence of cytoplasmic processes detected by electron microscopy. Microvillous non-hodgkin lymphomas appear to be of B cell lineage. Neoplasms considered in the differential diagnosis include anaplastic large cell Ki-1 lymphomas, malignant histiocytosis and metastatic carcinoma or malignant melanoma. A panel of markers are usually sufficient to recognize all of these neoplasms except microvillous lymphomas. We report a case of microvillous non-hodgkin lymphoma characterized by a histologi

Malignant histiocytosis. A reassessment of cases previously reported in 1975 based on paraffin section immunophenotyping studies.

Malignant histiocytosis (MH) is a term that has been used to describe a syndrome in which there is a systemic proliferation of cells that have the cytologic appearance of atypical histiocytes. Biopsy materials from 15 patients with malignant lymphoma diagnosed as malignant histiocytosis in a previous study reported in 1975 were analyzed by a panel of antibodies and reclassified using current nosologic concepts of malignant lymphoma. The antibodies used comprised reagents detecting a formalin-resistant epitope on B-cells (L26), T-cells (anti-CD3, anti-leu 22 [CD43], and UCHL1 [CD45RO]), monocyt

An immunocytochemical study on the distribution of ferritin and other markers in 36 cases of malignant histiocytosis.

The distribution of ferritin in 36 autopsy cases of malignant histiocytosis was investigated by immunocytochemical staining, together with the detection of alpha 1-antichymotrypsin, alpha 1-antitrypsin, lysozyme, S-100 protein, and ricinus communis agglutinin in the consecutive sections. The results showed that ferritin-positive tumor cells were present in every case. The quantity of cellular ferritin in well-differentiated histiocytes was higher than that in atypical histiocytes. Double labeling showed that ferritin and alpha 1-antichymotrypsin might be located either in one tumor cell or in

Immunohistochemical identification of macrophages and various dendritic cells in paraffin-embedded biopsy material.

Monoclonal antibodies (MoAbs) to monocytes/macrophages usually detect surface membrane antigens that are reactive only on cryostat sections of unfixed tissue. Such sections do not afford structural preservation conducive to satisfactory morphological characterization of various cell types. Moreover, in pathology laboratories the indication for immunohistochemical analyses often arises after routine preparation of the biopsy material has been carried out. Another difficulty is that the available MoAbs have shown a considerable degree of detection heterogeneity, including various dendritic cells

Cytological findings of langerhans cell sarcoma in a case of quintuple cancer.

Langerhans cell sarcoma (LCS) and quintuple cancers are extremely rare. In this report, a case of quintuple cancers including LCS was described. An 80-year-old man had squamous cell carcinoma of the nasal skin, colon and rectum adenocarcinomas, and T-cell/histiocyte-rich large B-cell lymphoma. As swelling of multiple submental lymph nodes was observed, fine-needle aspiration was carried out. Many large cells with high-grade nuclear atypia and abundant cytoplasm were observed. Lymphocytes and eosinophils were observed in the background. Although a malignant tumor was suspected, a definite diagn

Fine-needle aspiration biopsy of gouty tophi: lessons in cost-effective patient management.

Gout, a disease resulting from the effects of hyperuricemia and a crystal-induced arthropathy, may produce soft tissue masses (tophi) which mimick neoplasia clinically and radiographically. We have recently diagnosed three cases of gouty tophus, two of which were clinically suspected to represent sarcomas, by fine-needle aspiration biopsy (FNAB) after extensive radiologic and clinical evaluation. There were two women and one man. aged 71, 73, and 50 yr, with palpable soft tissue masses that involved the right forearm, right hand, and right foot, respectively, Biopsies were obtained by using 25

[Acute leukemia in the child: quality of the "cure". Apropos of 41 cases].

The authors studied retrospectively a group of 41 children in prolonged remission of Acute Leukemia (AL) or Non Hodgkin Malignant Lymphoma (NHML) treated with polychemotherapy and prophylactic cranial irradiation, searching for late side effects of the disease or its treatment. The neurological follow-up was satisfying enough (only one major sequela); growth abnormalities were found in 57.5% of children (correlated with hormonal deficiency), and some thyroid and gonadal impairments. Psychoaffective disturbances seemed to be moderate, but difficulties in learning and persistence of anxiety are

Difficult Diagnosis of Interdigitating Dendritic Cell Sarcoma of the Retroperitoneum: A Case Report and A Brief Review of the Literature.

Interdigitating dendritic cell sarcoma (IDCS) is a rare and aggressive neoplasm classified within the M-group of malignant histiocytoses. Its diagnosis poses a significant challenge. This article aims to describe a rare clinical case of IDCS and to illustrate the differential diagnostic process undertaken by the authors in establishing this diagnosis. A 60-year-old woman was admitted for the resection of a retroperitoneal mass discovered via CT scan. Morphological examination revealed a 7.5×5.5×5.0 cm tumor, encapsulated by a thin fibrous capsule. The tumor was composed of 90-95% inflammatory

Metastasizing aneurysmal dermatofibroma initially diagnosed as angiosarcoma confirmed by CD63::PRKCD fusion gene detection with nanopore sequencing.

Dermatofibroma (DF) is a benign tumor that forms pedunculated lesions ranging in size from a few millimeters to 2 cm, usually affecting the extremities and trunks of young adults. Histopathologically, DF is characterized by the storiform proliferation of monomorphic fibroblast-like spindle cells. In addition to neoplastic cells, secondary elements such as foamy histiocytes, Touton-type giant cells, lymphoplasmacytes, and epidermal hyperplasia are characteristic histological features. Several histological variants, including atypical, cellular, aneurysmal, and lipidized variants, have been repo

Xanthogranulomatous Breast Mass: An Unusual Presentation.

Xanthogranulomatous inflammatory reactions are benign inflammatory processes characterized by aggregating lipid-laden foamy macrophages. Although cases have been reported in different organ systems, these rare reactions predominantly occur in the kidney and gallbladder. We present a 92-year-old female who noticed a palpable, tender mass in the lower inner quadrant of her right breast with no skin changes. She was referred to surgery by her primary care physician on suspicion of malignancy and further evaluation. Ultrasound-guided biopsy, ordered by the primary care provider, revealed a suspici

Characterization of overlapping XAGE-1 transcripts encoding a cancer testis antigen expressed in lung, breast, and other types of cancers.

Cancer testis (CT) antigens have an expression pattern that is predominantly restricted to testis in normal tissues, yet they are expressed in many different histological types of cancers. One previously described member of the CT antigen family, XAGE-1, was shown to be expressed in Ewing's sarcomas and rhabdomyosarcomas. Here we show that XAGE-1 is also expressed in breast cancer, prostate cancer, and different types of lung cancers, including lung squamous cell carcinoma, adenocarcinoma, small cell lung carcinoma, and non-small cell lung carcinoma. In addition, XAGE-1 mRNA was present in ova

Malignant histiocytosis. Histologic, cytochemical, chromosomal, and molecular data with a nosologic discussion.

Although myelomonoblastic leukemia is thought to originate from a malignant transformation of the stem cell of the mononuclear phagocyte system, malignant histiocytosis (MH) is classically assumed to represent a malignant change of the terminal and fixed elements of this system. Indeed, MH is characterized by the proliferation of large, clear, pleomorphic, "histiocytic-like" HLADR and CD30+ cells resulting in a nodal and extranodal disseminated neoplasm affecting preferentially and severely children and young adults. Although there is broad agreement on the clinicopathologic presentation of th

Malignant histiocytosis. A report of three cases.

Three cases of malignant histiocytosis were immunohistochemically studied. The cases included the following three patients: a 38-year-old man, a 44-year-old man, and a girl aged 5 years 9 months. All three patients died within 3 months of hospitalization. They had a high fever (temperature over 38.5 degrees C), lymph node swelling, hepatosplenomegaly, and pancytopenia. Blastoid and hemophagocytic cells proliferated in the bone marrow and lymph nodes, especially in the sinuses of the latter. We diagnosed malignant histiocytosis in the three cases based on clinical features, extremely poor progn

An autopsy case of malignant histiocytosis with Reed-Sternberg-like cells.

We report an autopsy case of malignant histiocytosis. The clinical course was rapidly progressive and terminated with jaundice and respiratory failure. Histologically, there was diffuse infiltration of large atypical cells in the liver, spleen, lymph nodes and bone marrow. It was of interest that these tumor cells contained a number of bizarre multinucleated cells histologically indistinguishable from Reed-Sternberg cells of Hodgkin's disease, and that these atypical cells expressed DAKO M1 (identical to Leu M1) and Ki-1 antigens and also showed binding to peanut agglutinin (PNA), representati

High serum ferritin level as a marker of malignant histiocytosis and virus-associated hemophagocytic syndrome.

Serum ferritin level was measured serially in three malignant histiocytosis (MH) and five virus-associated hemophagocytic syndrome (VAHS) patients. Serum ferritin levels were greater than 1000 ng/ml at the early phase of disease. When disseminated intravascular coagulation (DIC) developed in patients, serum ferritin levels elevated further to greater than 12,000 ng/ml. MH patients were treated by combination chemotherapy, and VAHS patients were given prednisone. Each MH and VAHS patient died within 1 week from the onset of DIC, without decrease of serum ferritin level. One MH patient with cont

Multiple myeloma, IgA kappa type, accompanying crystal-storing histiocytosis and amyloidosis.

An autopsy case of multiple myeloma, IgA kappa type, accompanying systemic crystal-storing histiocytosis and generalized amyloidosis, is reported. Besides multiple destructive lesions in the skeletal bones, nodular myeloma cell infiltrates were scattered in the liver, spleen, and both kidneys. Not only in these lesions but also in the reticuloendothelial organs, crystal-storing macrophages appeared dispersively or in clusters. Electron microscopically, numerous crystalline inclusions contained in the cytoplasm of macrophages were membrane-bound and of variable configuration, comprising of a ho

Malignant histiocytosis in infants: surface marker analysis of malignant cells in two cases.

Two infants with malignant histiocytosis, as diagnosed by morphological and cytochemical examinations of malignant cells infiltrating pleural effusion, skin, and bone marrow, are described. Surface marker analysis of the malignant cells with monoclonal antibodies showed these cells to express markers of T-lymphocytes and HLA-DR antigen, but not those of B-lymphocytes, granulocytes, or monocytes. These immunological findings demonstrated that the neoplastic cells in malignant histiocytosis of infancy may be of T-cell origin, rather than histiocytic or monocytic origin.
