Cotton rats and other small mammals as hosts for immature Dermacentor variabilis (Acari: Ixodidae) in central Oklahoma.

Eight species of small mammals were evaluated as potential hosts for American dog ticks, Dermacentor variabilis (Say), in an upland, tallgrass prairie study site in central Oklahoma. Only hispid cotton rats, Sigmodon hispidus, and deer mice, Peromyscus maniculatus, were found to be important hosts for immature D. variabilis. Although D. varibilis larvae and nymphs frequently infested both cotton rats and deer mice, cotton rats were the most important host species for both immature stages in the study area. Cotton rats constituted 63.2% of the total 530 small mammals captured and were hosts to

Potential schistosome-vector snails and associated trematodes in ricefields of Corrients province, Argentina. Preliminary results.

Considering the possibility of introduction of schistosomiasis mansoni into Argentina as a consequence of dam construction on the Rio De La Plata basin, preliminary studies have been carried out on agrosystems such as ricefields in Corrientes province with the following purposes: 1) to survey and estimate the relative abundance of planorbids and identify potential vector species; 2) to identify environmental factors capable of influencing Biomphalaria population dynamics; and 3) to find out snail-parasite associations and estimate snail infection rates in order to detect possible competitive i

[Schistosoma species in Senegal with special reference to the biology, epidemiology and pathology of Schistosoma curassoni Brumpt, 1931].

By combining field and experimental investigations, we were able to study several new aspects of fundamental problems concerning human and animal schistosomiasis in Senegal. Because of the controversy about the identity of Schistosoma curassoni and the possibly connected zoonosis, this parasite has been described once more. A great variety of experimental techniques were used. The eggs of S. curassoni are significantly smaller than those of the two other African species of Schistosoma we know of in ruminants (S. bovis and S. mattheei). But eggs of S. curassoni cannot be distinguished from thos

Host-parasite relationship of Trypanosoma corvi in Ornithomyia avicularia.

The first description of an electron microscopic study of Trypanosoma corvi in the vector Ornithomyia avicularia is reported. There is a close association between vector and parasite in the midgut, ileum and rectum of the vector. The midgut distribution of parasites is determined by the peritrophic membrane, which confines the early infection to the endoperitrophic space. Parasites escape from the ruptured region of the peritrophic membrane at the pylorus to gain access to the ectoperitrophic space, where intense multiplication occurs. The resulting, smaller epimastigotes attach to the cuticle

Failure of Onchocerca gutturosa to develop in Simulium soubrense and Simulium yahense from Liberia.

Laboratory reared female S. soubrense and S. yahense from Liberia were intrathoracically inoculated with bovine skin dwelling microfilariae of Onchocerca gutturosa. Of a total of 174 flies, each injected with 50 fresh microfilariae, the maximum development was to late first-stage larvae. One S. soubrense also contained two second-stage larvae and a maldeveloped third-stage larvae. No development to normal third-stage larvae was observed in any fly despite maintenance at 28 degrees C for up to 10 days following infection. This contrasts with complete development of O. volvulus in both blackfly

Studies on the energy reserve of Fasciola gigantica (COBB.) from Nigerian zebu cattle. II. The fatty acid composition.

The fatty acids were studied of the total lipid extracts of mature liver flukes Fasciola gigantica from the bile ducts of Nigerian zebu cattle. The high content of saturated fatty acids, which amounted to more than 54% of the total fatty acids, conferred a high level of saturation on these parasites. This was brought about by a general increase in the values of palmitic acid. The results are discussed in connection with the parasite-host relationship.

The causes of tissue damage in toxoplasmic retinochoroiditis.

The pathogenetic mechanisms of tissue damage in toxoplasmic retinochoroiditis are complex and incompletely understood. They include invasion and parasitisation of retinal tissues by the Toxoplasma parasite and localised tissue damage by a complex associated immune response. Clinical and experimental studies which shed light upon our understanding of the disease process are reviewed and discussed with regard to current policies in treatment.

Experimental infection of goats with Sarcoptes scabiei var. ovis.

Goats were experimentally infected with Sarcoptes scabiei var. ovis from sheep, proving that this mite is not completely host specific. More severe lesions were produced on goats when the mites were applied to lacerated than when applied to scarified or non-scarified areas. Lesions were more pronounced on moistened areas than dry areas, and lesions produced on dry scarified areas resembled those produced on non-scarified moistened ones. Skin scrapings from the experimental lesions in the goats contained numerous mites of all stages, proving that the sheep mites had become well established and

Identification of Novel Dense-Granule Proteins in Toxoplasma gondii by Two Proximity-Based Biotinylation Approaches.

Toxoplasma gondii is an opportunistic pathogen infecting humans and a variety of vertebrate animals. Secretory dense-granule proteins (GRAs) play diverse roles in the mediation of host-parasite interactions and facilitate parasitism, but many of them still remain to be identified. Here, we used two proximity-based protein labeling techniques to identify novel GRA proteins. Taking GRA1 as bait, transgenic strains expressing GRA1-BirA* or GRA1-APEX were constructed to biotinylate GRAs. Using these methods, a total of 46 proteins were identified, 20 of which were known GRA proteins. Among these 4…

Ankyrin-1 Gene Exhibits Allelic Heterogeneity in Conferring Protection Against Malaria.

Allelic heterogeneity is a common phenomenon where a gene exhibits a different phenotype depending on the nature of its genetic mutations. In the context of genes affecting malaria susceptibility, it allowed us to explore and understand the intricate host-parasite interactions during malaria infections. In this study, we described a gene encoding erythrocytic ankyrin-1 (Ank-1) which exhibits allelic-dependent heterogeneous phenotypes during malaria infections. We conducted an ENU mutagenesis screen on mice and identified two Ank-1 mutations, one resulting in an amino acid substitution (MRI9584…

The genetic toolbox for Leishmania parasites.

Leishmania parasites cause a variety of devastating diseases in tropical areas around the world. Due to the lack of vaccines and limited availability of drugs, new therapeutic targets are urgently needed. A variety of genetic tools have been developed to investigate the complex biology of this parasite and its interactions with the host. One of the main techniques is the generation of knock-out parasites via targeted gene replacement, a process that takes advantage of the parasites ability to undergo homologous recombination. Studying the effect of gene deletions in vitro and in infectivity mo

Live-Cell FRET Reveals that Malaria Nutrient Channel Proteins CLAG3 and RhopH2 Remain Associated throughout Their Tortuous Trafficking.

Malaria parasites increase their host erythrocyte's permeability to various nutrients, fueling intracellular pathogen development and replication. The plasmodial surface anion channel (PSAC) mediates this uptake and is linked to the parasite-encoded RhopH complex, consisting of CLAG3, RhopH2, and RhopH3. While interactions between these subunits are well established, it is not clear whether they remain associated from their synthesis in developing merozoites through erythrocyte invasion and trafficking to the host membrane. Here, we explored protein-protein interactions between RhopH subunits

Urban Environments Impact Parasite Diversity and an Antipredator Response in an Amphibian Model.

Urbanization is a major driver of biodiversity loss by transforming ecosystems and imposing novel selective pressures that reshape not only species but also their interspecific interactions. In urban environments, predation pressure is often altered, leading to shifts in antipredator strategies, and parasitism varies with changes in environmental quality and the introduction of novel hosts or vectors. Understanding how these processes are modified by urbanization is particularly urgent for amphibians, the most threatened group of vertebrates, as urban-driven changes may have profound consequen

Strobilurin fungicide increases the susceptibility of amphibian larvae to trematode infections.

The global rise in fungal pathogens has driven the increased usage of fungicides, yet our understanding of their ecotoxicity remains largely … search demonstrates that fungicides at environmentally relevant concentrations can indirectly alter host-parasite interactions, which could elevate disease risk. It also underscores the need for studies that expand beyond traditional toxicity experiments to assess the potential community and ecosystem-level implications of environmental contaminants.
