Experiences in rehabilitation for individuals with acquired amputation: A narrative review.

The experiences of amputees undergoing rehabilitation are as unique as the individual. Exploring these experiences will set a more holistic foundation for clinicians to adjust care plans and goals. The purpose of this narrative review is to identify themes within the rehabilitation experience of upper and lower limb amputees. A search was completed in 4 separate databases, finding 8 appropriate articles based on inclusion criteria. The review followed Enhancing Transparency in Reporting the Synthesis of Qualitative Research guidelines. Three themes were synthesized from this review: ability/no

Interreliability of the Suitcase Packing Activity in Individuals With Hand Burns.

Many performance-based tools to assess hand function fall short of providing assessment in an occupation-based fashion. Here we report the interrater reliability of a standardized upper extremity (UE) assessment, the Suitcase Packing Activity (SPA), in individuals who sustained hand burns. We included adults with deep partial thickness or full thickness burns of one or both hands. Unstable orthopedic UE injuries, amputation of the thumb or UE, and/or mild cognitive deficits were excluded. SPA performance was independently rated by 2-3 assessors. Thirty participants, mean age 40.5 (SD = 14.7) y

Navigating auditory assessment in autistic individuals: a narrative review.

Abnormal sensory responses have been a diagnostic criterion for autism since 2013, with auditory hypersensitivities representing one of the most frequently reported symptoms. It is not unusual for children with autism, some of whom are as yet undiagnosed, to present clinically to specialists with a history of auditory symptoms in the context of normal hearing. This narrative review paper provides a theoretical background and model to account for autism-associated characteristics that arise within the auditory nervous system. The review highlights the need to assess these symptoms by a multidis

Individual Differences in Learning and Cessation Predict Academic Performance.

Most research on learning emphasizes knowledge learning, yet an equally important skill is knowing when to stop. This study examined learning cessation-when to disengage from further attempts once performance has stabilized-and its relation to academic performance. A sample of 183 undergraduates completed three perceptual discrimination problems varying in solvability and mastery criteria. Performance curves were analyzed by measuring error rates, allowing for the measurement of performance within the learning and cessation phases. Learners demonstrated wide variability across all three proble

The complexities of assessing and managing pain in individuals with advanced dementia.

Individuals with advanced dementia are at high risk of experiencing pain, yet assessment and management remain complex due to impaired communication and reliance on behavioural indicators. This article considers the strengths and limitations of behavioural pain assessment tools, alongside pharmacological and non-pharmacological approaches to management. Recommendations for nursing practice emphasise cautious use of validated tools, involvement of family carers, and holistic, person-centred care that combines therapeutic and pharmacological strategies where appropriate. By adopting flexible and

Automated workflow for genotyping individual transposon library variants.

BACKGROUND: The fields of genome engineering and synthetic biology rely on high-throughput screening to accelerate research and increase reproducibility. This often requires the use of costly equipment such as flow cytometers, specialized microfluidic devices or liquid handlers. Despite the availability of population-level screening methods, genotyping individual clones in transposon libraries remains a necessary but frequently labor-intensive task well suited for liquid-handling platforms. Although open-source automation is democratizing access to liquid handlers, it requires a minimum level

Investigation of Eating Patterns Among Individuals With Chronic Urticaria.

Chronic urticaria (CU) is a long-lasting inflammatory skin disease, characterized by recurrent wheals and/or angioedema lasting more than six weeks, often impairing quality of life. Recent findings suggest that eating behavior may play a role in CU symptom exacerbation. This study aimed to evaluate eating behaviors in patients with chronic spontaneous urticaria (CSU) and explore their relationship with disease activity and duration. A total of 83 CSU patients and 81 age- and sex-matched healthy controls were included in the study. Participants completed the Three-Factor Eating Questionnaire-Re

Individualized Virtual Angle Offset Training for Patients with Stroke.

Stroke is a leading cause of long-term sensorimotor disability, with upper limb deficits often persisting into the chronic stage. For many patients with stroke, the active muscle control zone, i.e., the angular range of typical muscle activation patterns, is reduced, leading to abnormal patterns and spasticity. When the displayed angle in a virtual environment is smaller than the actual angle, participants may implicitly perceive that their arm remains within the control zone. This discrepancy between visual and proprioceptive information may promote visuo-proprioceptive recalibration and sens

Individual Differences in Dopaminergic Modulation of Exploration-Exploitation Behaviour.

Dopamine (DA) has been implicated in exploration-exploitation behaviour, i.e., exploring novel, potentially better options vs. exploiting known, previously rewarding options. Impairments in this trade-off occur in psychiatric disorders involving DAergic dysfunction, including addiction and schizophrenia. Pharmacological studies revealed a contribution of DA to exploration, but inconsistent findings suggest interindividual variability in baseline DA may modulate effects. To address this, we investigated the effects of the DA precursor L-DOPA on exploration-exploitation during reinforcement lear

Sleep in Trans and Non-Binary Individuals: A Question of Gender?

Sleep problems are increasingly prevalent in society. One group that is disproportionately affected includes transgender and non-binary individuals, whose sex assigned at birth does not match their identified gender. This mismatch can lead to gender minority stress and increases the risk of mental disorders. However, research on sleep in this population remains extremely limited, especially when considering potential effects of gender-affirming care, including gender-affirming hormone therapy. Therefore, we conducted an anonymous, Germany-wide online study with 469 trans and non-binary individ

Active vision is linked to category selectivity in the individual brain.

Individuals reliably differ in how they look at complex visual scenes, with the most prominent variation in their propensity to fixate faces and text. Here we tested the hypothesis that these differences in gaze are linked to representational properties of the individual visual system in 61 adults. Eye-tracking captured each observer's characteristic gaze tendencies during naturalistic scene viewing, and independent functional magnetic resonance imaging recorded category-selective responses to faces, words and other stimuli when participants were instructed to fixate centrally. We find that th

Reduced Dissociation Between Perception and Action in Autistic Individuals.

PURPOSE: Changes in perceptual behaviors are a core phenotype of autism (in acknowledgment of the ongoing discourse regarding terminology about individuals diagnosed with autism, we use "autistic individuals" and “non-autistic individuals” in line with recent conventions), yet the underlying mechanisms remain unclear. In order to explore this, we tested the hypothesis that these changes arise from reduced cortical specialization by examining the well-established functional dissociation between visual processing for perception and action. METHODS: We examined the effects of spatial context (Exp

Understanding and managing inappropriate sexual behaviour in individuals with dementia.

Inappropriate sexual behaviour (ISB) is a recognised but underdiscussed aspect of the behavioural and psychological symptoms of dementia (BPSD), and may arise from neurocognitive changes, unmet emotional or relational needs and/or environmental stressors. ISB can have significant negative effects on the individual, their family caregivers, healthcare professionals and other formal carers, and presents management challenges. Nurses have a central role in assessing and managing ISB, therefore it is essential that they understand the underlying causes of such behaviours and are able to respond co

Treatments for Individuals with Suicidal Thoughts: Use, Indications, and Helpfulness.

BACKGROUND: Although millions of adults seriously consider suicide each year, clinical trials often exclude individuals experiencing suicidal ideation (SI). This analysis sought to describe the use of a range of psychiatric treatment modalities in individuals with mood disorders with and without a history of suicide attempt or SI. METHODS: Individuals with mood disorders (n=211; M=93/F=118) who had previously participated in psychiatric research at the National Institutes of Health Clinical Center completed a follow-up clinical assessment (range=1-20 years since study participation). Triple and quadruple combination antihypertensive therapy in untreated individuals.

This study aimed to assess the efficacy and safety of low-dose combinations (LDCs) of 3 or 4 blood-pressure (BP) lowering drugs in people with untreated hypertension. This was an updated systematic review and meta-analysis of randomised clinical trials comparing LDC to placebo, monotherapy and dual therapy in people on no background antihypertensive therapy. We identified 12 randomised clinical trials consisting of 4733 untreated patients (average age 55 ± 7 years with 57% women). Comparing LDC to placebo, the mean (95% CI) systolic blood pressure (SBP) difference was -13.1 (-17.6, -8.6, p < 0

Global to individual: key domains of burden in pediatric headache.

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: Pediatric headache not only impacts an individual's psychosocial, physical, and academic functioning, but also imposes a burden on their broader systems (e.g. healthcare, financial systems). Literature regarding the bidirectional nature of the socioecological burden of pediatric headache has yet to be synthesized. This is crucial, given the importance of identifying next steps for health-policy, advocacy, research, and intervention development for pediatric headache. RECENT FINDINGS: Globally, rates of pediatric headache have risen, with incidence and prevalence varying by

Effect of Hyposalivation on Fish Cake Mastication in Healthy Individuals.

During mastication, solid food is mixed with saliva to form a bolus. However, little is known about the effects of hyposalivation on mastication. The effects of hyposalivation on masticatory behavior were investigated using fish paste products. Healthy volunteers (n = 21) were instructed to eat two fish paste products (fish cakes and rolled omelets) in a natural manner. These foods are elastic with high water content. Electromyographic activity was recorded in the masseter, suprahyoid, and infrahyoid muscles during mastication before and after atropine administration, which reduced salivary fl

Breast cancer risk genes affecting individual radiosensitivity.

Increased radiosensitivity can cause adverse radiotherapy effects. Heterozygote variants in breast cancer risk genes increase cancer risk and may affect radiosensitivity. This study assessed their impact on individual radiosensitivity to determine the radiation risk for gene carriers. Radiosensitivity was analyzed in 273 patients with breast cancer risk gene variants. Using fluorescence in situ hybridization (FiSH), chromosomal aberrations were quantified as breaks per metaphase (B/M) after ex vivo irradiation of blood lymphocytes. Results were compared with healthy controls and breast cancer
