Risk of Wrong-Patient Orders Among Multiple vs Singleton Births in the Neonatal Intensive Care Units of 2 Integrated Health Care Systems.

IMPORTANCE: Multiple-birth infants in neonatal intensive care units (NICUs) have nearly identical patient identifiers and may be at greater risk of wrong-patient order errors compared with singleton-birth infants. OBJECTIVES: To assess the risk of wrong-patient orders among multiple-birth infants and singletons receiving care in the NICU and to examine the proportion of wrong-patient orders between multiple-birth infants and siblings (intrafamilial errors) and between multiple-birth infants and nonsiblings (extrafamilial errors). DESIGN, SETTING, AND PARTICIPANTS: A retrospective cohort stud

Using telemedicine in the care of newborn infants after discharge from a neonatal intensive care unit reduced the need of hospital visits.

AimThis study examined the use of telemedicine as a means to follow up infants discharged from a Swedish neonatal intensive care unit to home health care.MethodsFamilies were randomised to either a control group receiving standard home health care (n = 42 families) or a telemedicine group receiving home health care with telemedicine support (n = 47 families) after discharge from the hospital. Both groups had follow-up hospital appointments with the neonatal nurse. In the telemedicine group, appointments were supplemented by the use of a specially designed web page and video calls.ResultsThe us

Unrelated strain methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus colonization of health care workers in a neonatal intensive care unit: findings of an outbreak investigation.

Three neonates and 5 health care workers were identified as colonized with methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) out of 222 individuals screened during an outbreak investigation in an 18-bed neonatal intensive care unit. Two of 3 MRSA neonatal isolates demonstrated identical pulsed-field gel electrophoresis clonal patterns but no clonal association was found among isolates from the 5 employees or between employees and neonates. Increased MRSA-unrelated strain colonization among health care workers supports increased MRSA community prevalence and probable decreased utility of mass

Causes of death in very preterm infants cared for in neonatal intensive care units: a population-based retrospective cohort study.

BACKGROUND: While there are good data to describe changing trends in mortality and morbidity rates for preterm populations, there is very little information on the specific causes and pattern of death in terms of age of vulnerability. It is well established that mortality increases with decreasing gestational age but there are limited data on the specific causes that account for this increased mortality. The aim of this study was to establish the common causes of hospital mortality in a regional preterm population admitted to a neonatal intensive care unit (NICU). METHODS: Retrospective analy

Two site evaluation of the performance of a new generation point-of-care glucose meter for use in a neonatal intensive care unit.

BACKGROUND: Monitoring of blood glucose in neonatal intensive care unit (NICU) patients is important in maintaining normoglycaemia and reducing the risk of hypoglycaemia. Point-of-care testing (POCT) glucose meters provide short turnaround times but some have been reported to be affected by haematocrit interference and other biochemical or biological substances in their accuracy and performance. The aim of this study was to assess the performance of a new POCT glucose meter in a challenging preterm neonatal population. METHODS: The new Nova Biomedical StatStrip™ (Nova Biomedical) was tested o

Determinants of neonatal mortality in the neonatal intensive care unit of Dilla University Referral Hospital, Southern Ethiopia; 2019-2020; A matched, case-control study.

BACKGROUND: Neonatal mortality rate (NMR) refers to the number of deaths occurring from birth to 28 days of life per-1000 Live Births (LB). The global NMR declined from 37 deaths per- 1,000 LB in 1990 to 18 in 2017, whereas it was 27 deaths per 1000 LB in the Sub-Saharan region. Ethiopia plans to reduce the NMR from 28 deaths to 11 deaths per 1,000 LB by 2020 and to end all preventable child deaths by 2035. The aim of this study was to identify the determinants of neonatal mortality in the neonatal intensive care unit (NICU) of Dilla University Referral Hospital (DURH). METHODS: An age-matche

Assessing the Benefits of a Novel Postural Supporting Device on the Postural Development of Preterm Neonates in the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit: A Feasibility Study.

Advances in neonatal intensive care have significantly increased the survival rates of preterm infants. However, many of these infants continue to face serious motor impairments, contributing to both short- and long-term morbidity. Therapeutic positioning is a key neurodevelopmental intervention in neonatal intensive care units (NICUs), aimed at supporting posture and movement. This feasibility study evaluated the effects of a novel postural support device on the postural development of preterm neonates in the NICU. Nine medically stable preterm infants, with no diagnosed diseases or condition

Evaluation of the efficacy and associated complications of regional citrate anticoagulation in neonates: experience from a fourth level neonatal intensive care unit.

UNLABELLED: Continuous kidney replacement therapy (CKRT) use has increased in recent years, but anticoagulation is a challenge for neonates. Regional citrate anticoagulation (RCA) is rarely preferred in neonates because of citrate accumulation (CA) and metabolic complications. We aimed to demonstrate the efficacy and safety of RCA in neonates. We retrospectively analyzed the medical records of 11 neonates treated with RCA-CKRT between 2018 and 2023. The initial dose of RCA was 2.1-3 mmol/l, and then, its dose was increased according to the level of ionized calcium (iCa+2) in the circuit and pa

Prevalence and associated factors of prelacteal feeding among neonates admitted to neonatal intensive care units, North central Ethiopia, 2019.

BACKGROUND: Prelacteal feeding compromises the benefits of exclusive breastfeeding, thereby increasing neonatal malnutrition, infection and mortality. About 26% of the Ethiopian neonates are given prelacteal feeds and nearly 48% of whom are attributed to Amhara region. Besides, prior Ethiopian studies have shown significance of the problem at different community settings in the country. However, the prevalence and associated factors of prelacteal feeding among neonatal admissions has been overlooked in the country in general and in the study area in particular. Therefore, this study was aimed
