Personal, social and environmental risk factors of problematic gambling among high school adolescents in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia.

Understanding risk factors of problematic gambling is prerequisite to effective intervention design to alleviate the negative consequences of gambling. This study explored the personal, social and environmental risk factors of problematic gambling in four high schools in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, among students (N = 422) ranging from 12 to 21 years of age. Results from the cross-sectional survey showed that personal feelings (e.g., self-esteem, false perceptions about winning, drug abuse), social factors (e.g., peer influence, parental gambling), and environmental factors (e.g., accessibility of

Imaginal retraining reduces alcohol craving in problem drinkers: A randomized controlled trial.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: Retraining, a psychological intervention derived from the approach-avoidance paradigm, has yielded mixed results for the treatment of alcohol use disorder as well as other forms of addiction. The present study investigated the efficacy of an imaginal variant of retraining that allowed greater personalization of the content. METHODS: Within the framework of a randomized controlled trial (RCT), 84 individuals with self-reported alcohol-related problems were recruited over the Internet and allocated to either imaginal retraining (treatment manual dispatched as a pdf-fi

Measuring Female Gaming: Gamer Profile, Predictors, Prevalence, and Characteristics From Psychological and Gender Perspectives.

Research investigating female gaming is relatively scarce, and past research has demonstrated that men are more likely to be problematic gamers. Few studies have focused on female gamers in community samples, and those that have been published have mainly collected qualitative data in Europe. There is case study evidence suggesting clinicians are increasingly treating problem female gamers. The aim of this study is threefold: (i) to establish an international female gamer profile, (ii) to determine predictors associated with perceived internet gaming disorder (IGD), and (iii) to identify those

The Internet Gaming Disorder Scale.

Recently, the American Psychiatric Association included Internet gaming disorder (IGD) in the appendix of the 5th edition of the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (DSM-5). The main aim of the current study was to test the reliability and validity of 4 survey instruments to measure IGD on the basis of the 9 criteria from the DSM-5: a long (27-item) and short (9-item) polytomous scale and a long (27-item) and short (9-item) dichotomous scale. The psychometric properties of these scales were tested among a representative sample of 2,444 Dutch adolescents and adults, ages 13-40

[New and old addictions: implications for public health].

According to certain authors, any pleasure giving behaviour may become a habit, and depending on the circumstances, an addiction. The objective of this study is to examine the situation of addictions in Spain and the responses generated by health policies. In recent years, both the type and pattern of drug consumption in Spain, has undergone a noticeable change. Studies of the evolution of tobacco consumption suggest that the peak has passed, even though prevalence is still high. Alcohol consumption per capita has fallen by 25% in the last 25 years. During the same period, pattern of consumpti

Prevalence, motivation, psychological distress, and gender differences of problematic social media use among Chinese college students.

Problematic social media use (PSMU) presents a substantial public health concern due to its pervasive negative impacts. While psychological distress and specific social media use motives have been implicated as risk factors, prevalence rates and the nuanced role of gender have shown inconsistent findings globally. Crucially, these complex interrelationships between PSMU, use motives (i.e., coping, conformity, enhancement, and social), distress symptoms, and gender differences remain largely underexplored in Chinese college student populations. To address this, our anonymous, web-based, cross-s

The dark side of internet: Preliminary evidence for the associations of dark personality traits with specific online activities and problematic internet use.

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: Research has shown that personality traits play an important role in problematic internet use (PIU). However, the relationship between dark personality traits (i.e., Machiavellianism, psychopathy, narcissism, sadism, and spitefulness) and PIU has yet to be investigated. Consequently, the objectives of this study were to investigate the relationships of dark traits with specific online activities (i.e., social media, gaming, gambling, shopping, and sex) and PIU. METHODS: A total of 772 university students completed a self-report survey, including the Dark Triad Dirty Dozen

Sleep problems and internet addiction among children and adolescents: a longitudinal study.

Although the literature has documented associations between sleep problems and internet addiction, the temporal direction of these relationships has not been established. The purpose of this study is to evaluate the bidirectional relationships between sleep problems and internet addiction among children and adolescents longitudinally. A four-wave longitudinal study was conducted with 1253 children and adolescents in grades 3, 5 and 8 from March 2013 to January 2014. The sleep problems of the student participants were measured by parental reports on the Sleep Habit Questionnaire, which catalogu

A review of the scope of non-suicidal self-injury behavior in adolescents with depressive disorders: an analysis of related influencing factors.

BACKGROUND: Non-suicidal self-injury (NSSI) behavior is one of the major causes of death and disability in adolescents with depressive disorders, and this behavior has a high detection rate among adolescents globally, which seriously affects their physical and mental health and quality of life. Given the high prevalence and severity of NSSI behavior, this study provides a reference for the future construction of a risk-grading-based preventive intervention framework for NSSI in adolescents with depressive disorders by systematically sorting out the factors affecting non-suicidal self-injury.

Association between parental phubbing and short-form video addiction: A moderated mediation analysis among Chinese adolescents.

BACKGROUND: Short-form video applications have spread rapidly and gained popularity among adolescents for their interactivity, sociality, and personalization. However, excessive and uncontrolled use has also caused some adolescents to develop short-form video addiction (SFVA). Although parental phubbing has been shown to be a risk factor for SFVA in adolescents, its intermediate mechanisms, particularly the emotional mediation mechanisms, remain unclear. Therefore, this study aims to explore the relationships among parental phubbing, SFVA, symptoms of depression and anxiety, and neuroticism in

Bupropion sustained release treatment decreases craving for video games and cue-induced brain activity in patients with Internet video game addiction.

Bupropion has been used in the treatment of patients with substance dependence based on its weak inhibition of dopamine and norepinephrine reuptake. We hypothesized that 6 weeks of bupropion sustained release (SR) treatment would decrease craving for Internet game play as well as video game cue-induced brain activity in patients with Internet video game addiction (IAG). Eleven subjects who met criteria for IAG, playing StarCraft (>30 hr/week), and eight healthy comparison subjects (HC) who had experience playing StarCraft (<3 days/week and <1 hr/day). At baseline and at the end of 6 weeks of b
