Simulation training is an effective teaching tool enabling learners to gain a subjective understanding of a range of skills. Our aim in this study was to pilot and evaluate a newly designed simulation of auditory hallucinations as a future training tool for clinicians. This was a mixed-methods study in two parts. In Phase 1, trainee and qualified clinical psychologists (N = 25) attended the London-based immersive art exhibition, Altered States of Consciousness, which included an auditory hallucinations simulation. The exhibition aimed to improve understanding of what it feels like to hear voic

BACKGROUND: Whilst subjective quality of life has been extensively studied in patients with schizophrenia, little is known specifically about their satisfaction with their sex lives. Aim To assess the level of satisfaction with sex lives of patients with schizophrenia and explore patient characteristics associated with lower satisfaction.
METHOD: Data of five independent samples of patients with schizophrenia or related disorders (ICD-10 F20-29) were analysed. Quality of life including satisfaction with sex life was assessed on the Manchester Short Assessment of Quality of Life.
RESULTS: Acr

Few studies address the daily challenges faced by parents of children diagnosed with Tourette's syndrome. This article reports on a qualitative interview study with 15 parents exploring their experiences, the challenges they face and the support mechanisms they have found to be most helpful. Thematic analysis identified four core categories which represented shared experiences of the participants: coping with children's challenging behaviours, misconceptions and lack of understanding of professionals and the lay public, negative experiences of their children's education and lack of support and

BACKGROUND: Despite a significant rise in methamphetamine use in low- and middle-income countries, there has been little empirical examination of the factors that contribute to individuals' initiation of methamphetamine use in these settings. The goal of this study was to qualitatively examine factors associated with methamphetamine initiation in South Africa.
METHODS: In-depth interviews were conducted with 30 active methamphetamine users (13 women and 17 men) in Cape Town, South Africa. Interviews included narrative descriptions of the circumstances surrounding methamphetamine initiation. I

BACKGROUND: Integrating consumer perspectives in developing and adapting psychological treatments (PTs) can enhance their acceptability in diverse cultural contexts.
OBJECTIVE: To describe the explanatory models (EMs) of depression in South Asia with the goal of informing the content of culturally appropriate PTs for this region.
METHODS: Two methods were used: a systematic review of published literature on the EMs of depression in South Asia; and in-depth interviews with persons with depression and family caregivers in two sites in India. Findings from both were analysed independently and t

Social anxiety disorder is one of the most common mental disorders, and is associated with long term impairment, distress and vulnerability to secondary disorders. Certain types of social fears are more common than others, with public speaking fears typically the most prevalent in epidemiological surveys. The distinction between performance- and interaction-based fears has been the focus of long-standing debate in the literature, with evidence performance-based fears may reflect more mild presentations of social anxiety. This study aims to explicitly test whether different types of social fear

The clinical impact of structured risk assessment instruments has been limited by a lack of information regarding a) their short-term accuracy and b) the relationship between change as measured by the instrument and a change in the risk for harm. Data were collected every 4 weeks on a) variables designed to resemble the items of a structured risk assessment instrument, b) substance use, c) social circumstances and mental state, and d) violent behavior. Scores on the variables designed to resemble the items of a risk assessment instrument were associated with violence during the ensuing 4 weeks

This paper will examine how the narrative of one woman, Madeleine, can be constructed as symptomatic of the diagnosis of schizophrenia, and how it can also be read from other perspectives, particularly a poststructural feminist one. The readings are presented as possibilities for understanding the woman's experiences and the implications of this for mental health nursing practice. A poststructural feminist reading acknowledges the gendered experiences of subjectivity and how those experiences are constructed in language. The purpose of this paper is to identify for mental health nursing practi

The psychiatric investigation of foreign patients are important in the understanding of the mechanisms of exclusion. This is a descriptive study on a population of foreign patients consulting an outpatient psychiatric service. The diagnoses and modes of intake are discussed. The psychiatric examination is then analysed underlining what is useful for the physicians to understand foreign patients. Common problems are reviewed. Prevention is possible through adjustment of the frame towards specialized consultations.

The NIMH Diagnostic Interview Schedule for Children (DISC) was used to evaluate 40 psychiatric referrals aged 7-11 and 40 pediatric referrals matched for age, sex, race, and socioeconomic status. Each parent and child was interviewed separately using parallel versions of the interview, DISC-P and DISC-C, and parents completed the Child Behavior Checklist (CBCL). The psychiatric referrals had more psychiatric diagnoses and higher symptom scores than the pediatric referrals. Parent reports discriminated better between the criterion groups than child reports. In both groups, mild oppositional beh

We report a double-blind, randomized, placebo-controlled study utilizing a within-subjects design on 20 hospitalized, psychiatric patients who participated in sodium amobarbital interviews to determine if the drug has a specific effect in eliciting clinically useful information. The patients selected had difficulty communicating with their primary therapists during the postadmission, diagnostic interviews. Two raters completed a Hamilton Depression Scale, a New Haven Schizophrenia Index, and a Brief Psychiatric Rating Scale after each interview. Although both the amobarbital and saline intervi

BACKGROUND: Hypertriglyceridemia (HTG) is a common cause of acute pancreatitis (AP) and can be exacerbated by acquired metabolic conditions or rare inherited disorders (eg, familial chylomicronemia syndrome [FCS]), leading to HTG-induced AP (HTG-AP). HTG-AP is associated with severe abdominal pain typically requiring hospitalization and significantly impacts health-related quality of life (HRQoL).
OBJECTIVE: To understand patients' perspectives on the HRQoL impacts of HTG-AP.
METHODS: Interviews were conducted with adults with severe/very severe HTG and/or FCS, experiencing ≥1 HTG-AP episode

OBJECTIVE: Betrayal Trauma Theory posits that victims of trauma are more prone to developing psychological and physical problems if the traumatic event includes the element of betrayal. We sought to evaluate the impact of betrayal trauma versus nonbetrayal trauma and no trauma exposure on the risk of patients' reporting somatic symptoms in six domains (gastrointestinal, cardiopulmonary, musculoskeletal, pseudoneurological, gynecological, or any symptom).

BACKGROUND: Diagnostic criteria for somatization disorder emphasize its early onset and long-term stability. Research assessments of somatization disorder depend on lifetime recall of medically unexplained somatic symptoms.
METHODS: Longitudinal data from the World Health Organization Psychological Problems in General Health Care study were used to examine stability of somatization disorder and somatization symptoms over 12 months. At 15 study sites in 14 countries, consecutive primary care patients (N = 25916) were screened using the 12-item General Health Questionnaire. A stratified random

INTRODUCTION: Mortality in individuals with schizophrenia, including deaths not attributable to accidents and suicide, is at least twice that of the general population. While increasing physical exercise could promote positive mental and physical health outcomes in individuals with schizophrenia, only one other study of the determinants of exercise within this population has been reported. Our study attempts to resolve this void in knowledge by testing the applicability of the transtheoretical model (TTM) of behavior change to predicting exercise behavior in those with schizophrenia.

Individuals have been theorized to develop anaclitic and introjective depression to the extent that they may be characterized as dependent and self-critical, respectively (e.g., Blatt, 1990). Blatt's theory was applied to suicidal behavior to determine if suicidal behavior could also be reliably broken down into two distinctive types, with respect to a number of parameters. Sixty-four undergraduate students who had attempted suicide were interviewed, and the lethality of their attempts was assessed with the Risk-Rescue Rating scale (Weisman & Worden, 1972). Participants were also administered

We have described some of the problems encountered in an analyzability committee's evolving approach to the assessment of applicants to a psychoanalytic clinic. A primary error was to think in terms of the level of drive development--equating pathology at an oedipal level with analyzability. Recognition that the more important issue for assessment purposes was the presence or absence of those ego capacities and personality characteristics necessary for success in analysis has led to a reorientation of our approach.

ISSUE ADDRESSED: Power is central to understanding how health promotion networks and collaborations function. Power underpins the relational connectivity, yet its complexity renders it difficult to define. This study explores how power is understood within a health promotion network addressing HIV and Hepatitis C in Victoria, Australia.
METHODS: Inductive interviews were conducted with 30 senior organisational members working in the HIV and Hepatitis C health sector in Victoria, Australia. Participating organisations included community, research, government and health organisations. Interview

OBJECTIVES: The Zarit Burden Interview (ZBI) is one of the most widely used instruments for assessing caregiver burden. One of the most used short scales of the ZBI is the 7-item version. The aim of the study was to conduct a systematic review and generalization meta-analysis of the reliability and validity of the scores of the short version ZBI-7 items to determine whether they provide average values that justify their application and, secondly, to identify the characteristics of the studies that could explain the heterogeneity among the estimates.
METHODS: Forty-eight articles were identifi
