PURPOSE: Mitochondrial diseases are a heterogeneous group of disorders. Patients with such diseases often need general anesthesia for diagnostic procedures and surgery; guidelines are lacking for the anesthetic care of these patients.
METHODS: We conducted a survey to investigate the current practices of pediatric anesthesiologists in the US in order to determine and document current practice. Renal failure is a common complication of critically ill patients. Since the 1960s simple inexpensive cold lactated Ringers with additives has been used for short-term cold preservation of kidneys from living donors. We performed 266 living donor kidney transplantations from January 22, 2003 to October 30, 2006. We present a 79-year-old woman with severe hyponatremia secondary to resumption of treatment with paroxetine, a selective serotonin-reuptake inhibitor antidepressant. Confusion and fatigue followed re-initiation of paroxetine after a 3-month hiatus.
