OBJECTIVES: We aimed to identify predictors of confirmed monkeypox (mpox) among people with mpox-like illness and to develop a multivariable model for confirmed mpox.
METHODS: We performed an observational study using national epidemiologic surveillance data in Mexico from May to November 2022. People with mpox-like illness were reported to the Mexican Ministry of Health and real-time polymerase chain reaction was performed in clinical samples to confirm mpox. Sociodemographic and clinical data were collected with a case report form. We performed univariable logistic regressions to estimate t

The concept of viral load was introduced in the 1980s to measure the amount of viral genetic material in a person's blood, primarily for human immunodeficiency virus (HIV). It has since become crucial for monitoring HIV infection progression and assessing the efficacy of antiretroviral therapy. However, during the coronavirus disease 2019 pandemic, the term "viral load" became widely popularized, not only for the scientific community but for the general population. Viral load plays a critical role in both clinical patient management and research, providing valuable insights for antiviral treat

Historically, clinical microbiological laboratories have often relied on isolation of pure cultures and phenotypic testing to identify microorganisms. These clinical tests are often based on specific biochemical reactions, growth characteristics, colony morphology, and other physiological aspects. The features used for identification in clinical laboratories are highly conserved and specific for a given group of microbes. We speculate that these features might be the result of evolutionary selection and thus may reflect aspects of the life cycle of the organism and pathogenesis. Indeed, severa

OBJECTIVES: To evaluate the effect of on-site support in improving human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) rapid testing, tuberculosis (TB) sputum microscopy, and malaria microscopy among laboratory staff in a low-resource setting.
METHODS: This cluster randomized trial was conducted at 36 health facilities in Uganda. From April to December 2010, laboratory staff at 18 facilities participated in monthly on-site visits, and 18 served as control facilities. After intervention, 128 laboratory staff were observed performing 587 laboratory tests across three diseases: HIV rapid testing, TB sputum micro

Operations research was added as a fourth scientific track to the pathogenesis conference series at the 5th IAS Conference on HIV Pathogenesis, Treatment and Prevention (IAS 2009) in recognition of the importance of this growing research field and the need for applied research to inform and evaluate the scale up of some key interventions in HIV treatment, care and prevention.Several studies demonstrated how task shifting and the decentralization of health services can leverage scarce health care resources to support scale-up efforts. For example, a Ugandan study comparing home-based and facili

We encountered a 32-year-old Korean woman who developed murine typhus in a laboratory. She worked as a technician in a laboratory for rickettsial disease. Immunofluorescence test with rickettsial antigen (R. typhi) was positive at 1: 320 on admission and 1: 1280 after 4 weeks. A dose of 200 mg of doxycycline for 7 days proved to be effective for her condition.

BACKGROUND: The outbreak of Ebola virus disease in West Africa has brought great disaster to the people's health in affected countries. China dispatched first group of public health experts and medical staff to Sierra Leone in September 2014 to fight Ebola.
METHODS: To systematically collect huge amount of primary data, and to make analysis, draw conclusions and lessons in terms of six aspects, respectively as training before departure, local disease information, track of epidemic situation, transformation of temporary laboratory, detection of Ebola virus samples as well as assessment through

Nongonococcal urethritis(NGU) is one of the common sexually transmitted diseases. Chlamydia trachomatis is the commonest pathogen of NGU. Ureaplasma urealyticum, Mycoplasma genitalium, Trichomonas vaginalis and other pathogens also account for some cases of NGU. With the development of molecular biology and immunology, more and more new techniques, such as PCR, LCR, etc., have been used in the researches on the laboratory diagnosis of NGU. It is necessary to establish and standardize some reliable rapid diagnostic tests for NGU. This paper reviews the progress in researches on the concept, eti
