A farmer's wife was slapped by her cow's tail during milking. There was no obvious injury, but afterward she first developed unusual headaches of unknown origin and then a severe stroke 7 days later. Further diagnostics, including magnetic resonance imaging techniques, revealed a dissection of the carotid artery to be the reason for the stroke, probably caused by being hit by the cow's tail. This case demonstrates that persisting unusual headaches, even after minor trauma, should lead to further diagnostic procedures and then therapeutic intervention for stroke prevention if necessary.

PURPOSE: The aim of this study is to find the relationship between lead level in blood (Pb-B) and visual evoked potentials (VEP) in children, environmentally exposed to lead.
MATERIAL AND METHODS: 32 children (64 eyes) with no clinical signs of lead poisoning were examined. Corrected visual acuity was 5/5 in all eyes. Total occlusion of the left subclavian vein was diagnosed in a 76-year-old patient, 6 years after implantation of an ICD with VVI pacing backup. Replacement of the ICD included upgrading of the ICD system because of the presence of pacemaker syndrome when the patient was VVI paced. Insertion of an atrial lead through the ipsilateral vein system was made possible by using the supraclavicular approach of the subclavian, enabling puncturing of the left subclavian vein medially to the obstruction.

In this paper we study the calcium uptake in the erythrocyte, a non-excitable cell. This uptake is performed through a passive transport system with two kinetic components (Michaelis-Menten and Hill). The uptake of calcium seems to be driven by voltage through its electrophoretical effect. Lead is capable of inhibiting calcium uptake in a non-competitive manner. As it has been described in other systems, lead is also capable of inhibiting calcium efflux by inhibiting Ca(Mg)-ATPase.
