[Polymorphous low-grade adenocarcinoma: a palatine and a labial location].

INTRODUCTION: Polymorphous low-grade adenocarcinoma (PLGA) is a variant of malignant tumor of minor salivary glands. We had for aim to discuss morphology, evolution and differential diagnosis of this rare tumor. CASE REPORTS: The first case was a 65-year-old woman admitted for a two-month history of a right submaxillary swelling. The examination revealed a tumor of the right side of the palate. Biopsy was positive for a pleomorphic adenoma. The mass was enlarged and surgical resection was performed. The diagnosis was a partially resected PLGA. The patient also received adjuvant radiotherapy.

Malignant peripheral nerve sheath tumors of the head and neck: two cases and a review of the literature.

Malignant peripheral nerve sheath tumors are uncommon lesions that occasionally affect the head and neck. We describe 2 new cases of head and neck pathology. One tumor involved the parotid gland and resulted in erosion of the temporal bone, and the other affected the lower lip. A rapid diagnosis has significant implications for management because of the tumor's potential for aggressive behavior and its high rate of recurrence. To the best of our knowledge, lip involvement is rare and temporal bone involvement has not been previously described.

[The onset of double metachronous neoplasms 29 years after the diagnosis of Hodgkin's disease].

The occurrence of two new cancers (a diffuse centrocytic lymphoma and a basal cell cancer) in a patient successfully treated for Hodgkin's disease 29 years before is reported. The centrocytic lymphoma mainly involved the skin, the basal cell carcinoma developed on the dorsum of the right hand. The patient had received high-dose Roentgen-radiation therapy on the mediastinum and lymph nodes for his Hodgkin's disease. The possible relationship between performed therapy and occurrence of new malignancies is discussed.

[Precancerous conditions and carcinomas of the lower lip. Coincidence with leukoplakia and carcinomas of the oral cavity and larynx].

In a prospective study of 102 patients with pre-neoplasia and/or manifest squamous-cell carcinoma of the lower lip the synchronous occurrence of intra-oral, pharyngeal or laryngeal leukoplakia and carcinoma was assessed. There was a coincidence rate of almost 15% leukoplakias, including individual carcinomas. This high coincidence is probably due to a combination of various "risk profiles" in patients with threatened or manifest lower-lip cancer. Chronic exposure to sunlight, especially in the presence of a genetic disposition, is the most important risk factor in lower-lip cancer and its prec

Modified Lateral Surgical Approach to the Pterygopalatine Fossa for Safe Preservation of the Peripheral Branch of the Marginal Mandibular Nerve.

In cases where oral cancer spreads toward the maxillary tubercle, surgery may extend to the pterygopalatine fossa. There are 2 main extraoral approaches: anterior and lateral. Previously, we introduced a modified lateral approach with a mouth corner incision from the lower lip, that preserves the mental and marginal mandibular nerves. Now, we present a further modification that allows safer preservation of the peripheral branches of the marginal mandibular nerve around the mouth. The procedure has 2 key points. The first is to follow the course of the marginal mandibular nerve from the submand

Ultrasound-guided microwave ablation for treatment of lip cancer.

Lip and oral cavity cancer is a severe and growing problem, ranked 16th for both incidence and mortality worldwide. These malignancies are mainly treated with surgery, which can cause a wide range of sequelae. Despite ultrasound-guided microwave ablation (MWA) being widely used, there is no report concerning its application in lip cancer. This study presents a case of ultrasound-guided MWA in a 97-year-old man with squamous cell carcinoma (SCC) and lymph node metastases under the lower lip. The patient was unsuitable for surgery due to his older age. At the most recent 1-year follow-up after t

Expression of stem cell markers Nanog and Nestin in lip squamous cell carcinoma and actinic cheilitis.

UNLABELLED: Cancer stem cell (CSC) proteins have been observed in several lesions and are associated with tumor beginning, evolution, and resistance to treatment. OBJECTIVES: To investigate the presence of NANOG, NESTIN, and β-tubulin in lip squamous cell carcinoma (LSCC), actinic cheilitis (AC), and normal epithelium (NE). MATERIALS AND METHODS: Thirty cases of LSCC, thirty cases of AC (both analyzed according to the WHO classification and AC according to the binary classification), and twenty cases of NE were submitted to an immunohistochemical study. RESULTS: NANOG was more expressed in

Total lower lip and chin reconstruction with radial forearm free flap: A novel approach.

BACKGROUND: The management of large chin and lower lip defects is challenging due to this facial subunit's tremendous functional and aesthetic importance. Specific methods for total lower lip and mentum reconstruction are not well chronicled. Aesthetic and functional goals of this reconstruction include restoration of oral competence by maintaining lower lip height, vermilion reestablishment, color-matched skin introduction to the chin, sensation restoration, and ideally restoration of dynamic activity to the lower lip. METHODS: Literature review performed. RESULTS: Presentation of novel, tw

Two-Piece Extraoral Prosthetic Rehabilitation to a Perineural Invasion Lip Cancer.

Lip cancers can severely affect a person in terms of function, esthetics, and psychological trauma. After surgical resection, lip defects require special rehabilitation. This clinical report describes a neck prosthesis of a male patient diagnosed with lower lip squamous cell carcinoma with perineural involvement. The neck prosthesis was connected to the mandibular complete denture with cobalt samarium magnets. Both prostheses improved the patient's mastication, deglutition, and esthetics.

The Freestyle Facial Artery Perforator Flap for Reconstruction of Simultaneous Periorbital and Cheek Defects.

The reconstruction of defects involving the nasolabial, paranasal, and periorbital regions may be challenging, because they often involve more than one facial aesthetic unit, and can lead to functional problems. An average of 5 facial artery perforators of caliber >0.5 mm can be found above the mandible. A reference point for the location of the most constantly encountered perforator was suggested as being 1.5 cm lateral to the oral commissure, and at its same level in height or slightly inferior to the commissure. Based on injection studies, it is known that these perforators can supply an av

Local flap reconstruction of acquired lip defects.

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: The goal of this article is to review contemporary local flap reconstructive techniques for acquired lip defects. Lip reconstruction is a complex undertaking that necessitates an understanding of underlying principles. New techniques focus on local flap reconstruction which maintain oral competence, avoid microstomia, and achieve aesthetically satisfactory results. RECENT FINDINGS: The contemporary literature employs an aesthetic subunit approach to achieve reconstruction of vermillion, perioral cutaneous, and full-thickness defects. Several new techniques are variations of

Comparative analysis of the mast cell density in normal oral mucosa, actinic cheilitis and lip squamous cell carcinoma.

Previous studies have shown that the number of mast cells is increased in ultraviolet (UV) irradiated skin and in neoplasias. Actinic cheilitis (AC) is a lesion caused by excessive exposure to sunlight that can transform into lip squamous cell carcinoma. The aim of this study was to compare the number of mast cells in 4 groups: NOM = normal oral mucosa (n=6); MDAC = mild dysplasia in actinic cheilitis (n=13); SDAC = severe dysplasia in actinic cheilitis (n=13); and LSCC = lip squamous cell carcinoma (n=15). The sections were stained by histochemical technique of blue toluidine and visual count

Congenital malformations of the oral cavity.

Congenital malformations of the oral cavity may involve the lips, jaws, hard palate, floor of mouth, and anterior two thirds of the tongue. These malformations may be the product of errors in embryogenesis or the result of intrauterine events disturbing embryonic and fetal growth. This article begins with a review of the pertinent embryologic development of these structures. After reviewing the normal embryology, specific malformations are described. Recommended management follows the brief description of each malformation. An attempt is made to point out where these malformations deviate from

Cancer in asbestos-mining and other areas of Quebec.

Employing incidence data from the Quebec Tumor Registry, we examined the relative risks of cancer of all sites for the years 1969-73 in the asbestos-mining, rural, and metropolitan counties of Quebec Province, Canada. Generally, rates for males exceeded those for females, and the relative risks in the asbestos-mining counties for 7-10 different sites of cancer, all of low incidence, were from 1.50 to 8.08 times those of other rural counties of the Province for both sexes. Metropolitan counties exhibited equally high risk for many of these sites. We discovered higher risks among males in asbest
