Screening for refractive errors, strabismus and other ocular anomalies from ages 6 months to 3 years.

There were 3,375 children between the ages of 6 months and 3 years screened for refractive errors and strabismus. In 363 children (10.7%) some kind of pathology was detected. We suggest that continued efforts should be made to lower the age of detection of defects in vision.

[A comparison of impedance and pure tone audiometry in children (author's transl)].

The results of conventional pure-tone audiometry and impedance audiometry are compared in 386 pre-school children. The children showing abnormal audiograms were subjected to a repeated examination in the ENT Clinic a few weeks later. It was shown, that all children, whose hearing disorders were confirmed, had already had abnormal impedance measurements during the screening examination. On the other hand, pathological changes of the ears were detected in 5.92% of the children only by the impedance measurements and not by the conventional puretone audiometry. Evaluation of the pressure and the a

[Evaluation of globular osmotic resistance (GOR) and of the lysis test with glycerol (GLT/50) in the screening of heterozygous thalassemia].

A rapid and simple procedure measuring the rate of hemolysis of 50% of erytrocytes suspended in a standardized glycerol mixture (GLT/50) has been compared with the erytrocyte osmotic fragility to NaCl 0.375% concentration, carried out according to Parpat's method modified, in order to estimate the respective behaviour in the screening of beta-thalassemia trait. The GLT/50 is provided with more selectivity especially between beta-thalassemia trait carriers and other subjects with iron deficiency anemia.

System Evaluation of Optical Screening and Conditioning for Injury Resilience.

INTRODUCTION: Non-combat musculoskeletal injuries (MSKIs) are the leading cause of medical disability across the military, with poor exercise form-including misalignment and mistiming-being key contributors. Rehabilitation and conditioning can build resilience and reduce risk. Our recent work resulted in a prototype Optical Screening and Conditioning for Injury Resilience (OSCIR) system offering real-time, non-contact, biofeedback through field-deployable motion capture equipped with three-dimensional (3D) camera-based technology and an augmented reality (AR) viewer for tracking exercise form

Cystic Fibrosis-Related Diabetes: Pathophysiology, Spectrum of Glycemic Abnormalities, and Evolving Approaches to Screening.

Cystic fibrosis-related diabetes (CFRD) is a well-recognized and increasingly prevalent complication of cystic fibrosis (CF), most frequently developing in adolescence and adulthood. CFRD is associated with pulmonary function decline, poor nutritional status, and increased infection risk, and contributes to increased morbidity and mortality. The objective of this review is (1) to provide a summary of CFRD pathophysiology, highlighting the spectrum of glycemic abnormalities preceding development of CFRD, and (2) to review CFRD screening guidelines, including a narrative review of the current ev

Screening Strategies for Identification of Transthyretin Amyloid Cardiomyopathy.

Transthyretin amyloid cardiomyopathy (ATTR-CM) remains underdiagnosed relative to population estimates in at-risk populations. Efforts have identified clinical features that identify risk for the diagnosis of ATTR-CM and have developed associated risk prediction models to identify risk of the presence of clinical ATTR-CM disease. Prospective validation and broad implementation of these data across health care systems have been limited. In this context, there is an unmet need to synthesize existing risk modeling published reports and discuss implementation approaches to identifying ATTR-CM. In

Interventions to Increase Hepatitis B Testing Uptake Amongst Detained Populations: A Systematic Review.

People who have been detained have a higher prevalence of hepatitis B virus (HBV) than the general population, yet testing uptake remains limited. Improving testing uptake in high-risk settings is essential to the World Health Organization 2030 elimination target. This systematic review examines interventions aimed at increasing hepatitis B testing uptake in prison. MEDLINE, EMBASE, CENTRAL and CINAHL were searched from January 2000 to April 2025. Quantitative interventional studies were included. Quality appraisal was conducted using the JBI critical appraisal tool. A random effects meta-anal

Infection screening at listing and vaccination management through the waiting period in lung transplant candidates in Japan.

Infectious complications remain a major contributor to morbidity and mortality after lung transplantation. In Japan, prolonged waiting periods are a major challenge for lung transplant candidates, during which infection-related risk evolves with new exposures, exacerbations, and hospitalizations. This review provides a practice-oriented approach to infection screening at listing and vaccination management throughout the waiting period for lung transplantation in Japan. Baseline screening at listing is organized into universal serologies, respiratory microbiology (bacteria, moulds, and nontuber

Evaluating the diagnostic accuracy of a screening questionnaire for detecting hidradenitis suppurativa: a pooled analysis of accuracy measures from the Global Hidradenitis Suppurativa Atlas (GHiSA) study.

BACKGROUND: Hidradenitis suppurativa (HS) is an inflammatory skin condition that is associated with a prolonged diagnostic delay of approximately 7-10 years. The diagnostic delay can be attributed to various factors, including low awareness of diagnostic criteria among nondermatological healthcare professionals often leading to misdiagnosis. Screening questionnaires have been proposed for the diagnosis of HS. One such questionnaire has been validated and used in the Global Hidradenitis Suppurativa Atlas (GHiSA) Global Prevalence Study (GPS). OBJECTIVES: To evaluate and provide a summary of th

Optimising screening for recurrent tuberculosis: a microsimulation-based study.

BACKGROUND: People recently treated for tuberculosis (TB) (TB survivors) face substantial risk of recurrence. The optimal implementation and expected impact of active case-finding are uncertain. METHODS: We developed an individual-level stochastic simulation model of TB recurrence among recently treated people in India, informed by empirical data on the cumulative incidence and timing of TB recurrence, the extent and durations of symptoms and bacteriological positivity and screening-related costs. We modelled post-treatment symptom screening at quarterly or semiannual intervals, with or witho

Responsible mental health screening in high-performance sport: fit-for-purpose tools and care pathways.

Kegelaers and colleagues provide a timely critique of mental health screening in high-performance sport, highlighting concerns regarding predictive validity, feasibility, effectiveness, and potential harms. We welcome this debate and agree that screening can become problematic when used uncritically, symbolically, or without sufficient follow-up capacity. At the same time, if such critiques are interpreted as discouraging mental health screening as a practice, they may unintentionally reinforce mental health-related stigma by implying that mental ill-health is uniquely unsuitable for routine a

Generating evidence to support the role of AI in diabetic eye screening: considerations from the UK National Screening Committee.

Screening for diabetic retinopathy has been shown to reduce the risk of sight loss in people with diabetes, because of early detection and treatment of sight-threatening disease. There is long-standing interest in the possibility of automating parts of this process through artificial intelligence, commonly known as automated retinal imaging analysis software (ARIAS). A number of such products are now on the market. In the UK, Scotland has used a rules-based autograder since 2011, but the diabetic eye screening programmes in the rest of the UK rely solely on human graders. With more sophisticat

Advances in screening and management of unruptured intracranial aneurysms.

The clinical evaluation and decision making associated with the management of unruptured intracranial aneurysms are complex. In the past 5 years, studies have evaluated the benefits of screening in people at high-risk, such as those with a family history of aneurysmal subarachnoid haemorrhage or unruptured intracranial aneurysms, people with genetic or other disorders associated with intracranial aneurysms, and people who smoke and have hypertension. If an aneurysm is detected during screening or incidentally, prediction models now allow for estimating the risk of complications from preventive
