Cephalometric evaluation of maxillary sinus sizes in different malocclusion classes.

We found few studies on the association between maxillary sinus size and malocclusion in an electronic search using PubMed. The purpose of this study was to investigate maxillary sinus size in different malocclusion groups and the association between maxillary sinus size and dentofacial morphology by the use of lateral cephalometric radiographs. A total of 120 lateral cephalograms were used. These radiographs were derived from subjects with skeletal Class I, Class II, and Class III malocclusions, classified on the basis of the A-N-B angle. Each malocclusion group consisted of 20 boys and 20 gi

Foreign body in the maxillary sinus: report of an unusual case.

The accidental displacement of foreign bodies into the maxillary sinus is not an unusual complication in dental clinical practice. However, dental materials, and, in particular, dental impression materials, introduced into the sinus several weeks to months after a maxillary tooth extraction or dentoalveolar surgery through either a small, long-standing oroantral fistula or an insufficiently healed extraction wound is uncommon. In the case reported, 3 months after a maxillary molar extraction, the material used for maxillary impression was pushed into the antrum through a small, almost invisibl

The silent sinus syndrome: maxillary sinus atelectasis with enophthalmos and hypoglobus.

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: The silent sinus syndrome is a rare clinical entity of spontaneous enophthalmos and hypoglobus caused by an alteration of the normal orbital architecture and function from maxillary sinus collapse in the setting of chronic sinusitis. RECENT FINDINGS: The maxillary sinus collapse appears to result from the development of negative sinus pressure from an acquired obstruction of the maxillary sinus outflow. Patients most often present with symptoms relating to enophthalmos, although few report any symptoms of sinus disease. SUMMARY: Characteristic radiographic features of the

[A-mode ultrasonography and roentgenography in diagnosing chronic nonpolypoid maxillary rhinosinusitis].

OBJECTIVES: The aim is to demonstrate diagnostic alternatives for A-mode ultrasonography in examining chronic nonpolypoid rhinosinusitis, its implementation, as well as its advantages and disadvantages in regards to roentgenography. METHOD: The prospective research conducted included patients with chronic nonpolypoid rhinosinusitis, at 79 maxillary sinuses. Chronic diseases are classified into two separate categories depending on the clinical entity. Comparative analysis of the ultrasound and roentgenography findings was conducted for both, while the status of the maxillary sinuses obtained b

[Nasal cavities and paranasal sinuses in newborns and children].

The paranasal or accessory nasal sinuses begin their development as evaginations of the mucosa during the 3rd and 4th fetal months, but undergo their major expansion after birth according to the development of the facial cranium and the teeth. While in the newborn the sphenoidal and frontal sinuses are still only predispositioned, the ethmoidal labyrinth and particularly the maxillary sinus are of appreciable size. In the 4-year-old the frontal and sphenoidal sinuses are already developed and in the 12-year-old the paranasal sinuses reach their final form and a size equivalent to the adult.

The relationship between frontal sinus drainage and osteomeatal complex disease: a CT study in 217 patients.

Over a period of 2 years we reviewed the CT scans of 217 patients with recurrent sinusitis. Our findings revealed a number of cases of osteomeatal complex disease with no frontal sinus involvement. This result is difficult to reconcile with the concept of a common drainage in the middle meatus shared by the frontal and anterior ethmoid sinuses. We conclude that the frontal sinus drains separately from the other paranasal sinuses in a large percentage of cases, and that the frontal sinus is frequently spared when there is ethmoid or maxillary sinusitis.

Effects of Corticobasal Implant Protrusion inside the Nasal and Maxillary Sinus.

BACKGROUND: Implant protrusion into the nasal and maxillary sinuses presents a challenge in cases of severely resorbed maxillae. AIM: The aim of this study was to evaluate the clinical and radiographic effects of BECES® implant penetration depth into the nasal and maxillary sinuses. SETTING AND DESIGN: This was an observational study conducted in a tertiary institution. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Forty-nine BECES® implants were inserted into the maxilla of patients who presented with severely resorbed ridges but no history of sinusitis. Forty-five implants protruded into the sinus cavities. Pat

Dose-dependent effects of topical tobramycin in an animal model of Pseudomonas sinusitis.

BACKGROUND: Topical antimicrobials are commonly used to treat Pseudomonas sinusitis after endoscopic sinus surgery. Despite their popularity, there is limited data in the literature to support its use. This study is the first to examine the effects of topical tobramycin in an animal model of Pseudomonas sinusitis. METHODS: Pseudomonas aeruginosa sinusitis was induced in the maxillary sinus of New Zealand white rabbits. Study groups received various concentrations of topical tobramycin instilled through a single lumen catheter embedded within the maxillary sinus for 7 consecutive days. A contr

[The use of antibiotics in dental implantology].

The use of antibiotics in dental implantology is very common and the abuse of antibiotics is increasingly obvious. The rational use of antibiotics in the process of oral implantology needs the support of evidence based medicine. The prophylactic use of antibiotics in dental implantology is reviewed in this article, including the summary of different infection risks, such as peri-implantitis and maxillary sinusitis after maxillary sinus floor lifting.

[Specific features of the development of chronic inflammation in the maxillary sinus].

The present morphological study was based on the analysis of materials obtained during the surgical treatment of 64 patients aged from 15 to 68 years presenting with long-term chronic purulent maxillary sinusitis. All the patients had been inadequately treated with antibacterial preparations during the pre-hospitalization period. It was shown that the patients developed well-apparent pathomorphological changes in maxillary sinus mucosa that promoted chronization of the inflammatory process.

Microsurgical enophthalmos correction after silent sinus syndrome.

A 66-year-old man with silent sinus syndrome, resulting in progressive enophthalmos and subclinical chronic maxillary sinusitis, presented after several failed attempts at reconstruction with conventional methods. A free fibula osteoseptocutaneous flap was used to recreate the orbital floor, obliterate the maxillary sinus, and augment the periorbital contour deformity in a single stage. This is a novel approach for the treatment of Silent Sinus Syndrome in a single stage.

Sixth nerve palsy of para-infectious origin.

Acute abducens palsy of para-infectious origin is uncommon in adulthood. We present the case history of a 28-year-old woman suffering from acute onset diplopia due to abducens palsy. Magnetic resonance imaging revealed signs suggestive of frank ipsilateral maxillary sinusitis. The lack of anatomical relationship between the maxillary sinus and the abducens nerve led us to conclude that the abducens palsy was of para-infectious origin.

A simple animal model of Staphylococcus aureus biofilm in sinusitis.

BACKGROUND: Previous research suggested that the biofilm of Staphylococcus aureus contributes greatly to the recalcitrant nature of chronic rhinosinusitis (CRS). However, the lack of a simple and stable animal model limited further study in this field. The aim of this study was to create a convenient animal model of S. aureus biofilms in the maxillary sinus of rabbit. METHODS: New Zealand white rabbits were used as model animals and incised vertically along the median line of the nasal dorsum to expose the anterolateral wall of maxillary sinus, on which a 1.5-mm-diameter hole was drilled to e

Comparison of cone-beam computed tomography and panoramic radiography in the evaluation of maxillary sinus pathology related to maxillary posterior teeth: Do apical lesions increase the risk of maxillary sinus pathology?

PURPOSE: The aims of this study were first, to compare panoramic radiography with cone-beam computed tomography (CBCT) for evaluating topographic relationships, such as the classification of maxillary posterior teeth and their distance to the maxillary sinus floor; and second, to determine the relationship between maxillary sinus pathology and the presence of apical lesions. MATERIALS AND METHODS: In total, 285 paired CBCT and panoramic radiography records of patients (570 maxillary sinuses) were retrospectively analyzed. Both imaging modalities were used to determine the topographic relation

Actinomycosis of the paranasal sinuses: case report and literature review.

Actinomycosis is a chronic granulomatous condition caused by filamentous gram-positive anaerobic bacteria that colonizes the mouth, gastrointestinal tract and urogenital tract. Infection occurs through the mucosal surfaces, often resulting from dental procedures or trauma, primarily affecting the maxillary sinus. We report a case of Actinomyces sinusitis affecting the right maxillary and right ethmoidal sinuses of a 41-year-old woman. The diagnosis was made through a combination of histopathological report and computed tomography scan. The patient underwent endoscopic sinus surgery followed by

Selective irrigation of paranasal sinuses in the treatment of recalcitrant chronic sinusitis.

BACKGROUND: Chronic rhinosinusitis (CRS) refractory to medical and surgical therapy is a challenging entity to treat. Topical antibiotics and anti-inflammatory drugs have been increasingly used in managing this disorder. The aim of this pilot study is to evaluate the role of maxillary sinus antrostomy tubes (MAST) in selectively irrigating paranasal sinuses with topical antibiotics with anti-inflammatory in treating recalcitrant CRS. A prospective clinical trial was performed at a tertiary referral center. METHODS: Thirteen patients with failed maximal medical and surgical therapies for chron

A malignant peripheral nerve-sheath tumor: A CARE case report.

INTRODUCTION: Malignant peripheral nerve-sheath tumor (MPNST) is an extremely rare sarcoma of the nasal cavity and paranasal sinuses. Non-specific clinical and radiological presentation and challenging histological diagnosis make it little known by physicians. We describe a case of maxillary sinus MPNST, following CARE guidelines. CASE REPORT: A 62-year-old woman consulted for swelling of the right cheek and hard palate with several months' progression. CT and MRI revealed a tissue mass in the right maxillary sinus with osteolysis of the orbital and maxillary floors, hard palate and lateral a

Investigation on the relationship of dimensions of the maxillary sinus drainage system with the presence of sinusopathies: a cone beam computed tomography study.

OBJECTIVE: This study sought to assess the relationship between the dimensions of the maxillary sinus drainage system with the content of sinuses. DESIGN: Three-hundred cone beam computed tomography images were selected from a database (105 males and 195 females). The images were assessed by a single investigator, trained and calibrated, performing image analysis. The length of the infundibulum and the ostium height in both maxillary sinuses were measured. The data were analyzed using Minitab 16, using 5% as a critical p-value. RESULTS: A significant gender difference was also found for pres

Management of Oro-antral Communication and Fistula: Various Surgical Options.

Oro-antral communication and fistula can occur as a result of inadequate and improper treatment. Inadvertent communication with the maxillary sinus can occur during certain surgical procedures in the maxillary posterior region. Though, spontaneous healing may occur in defects which are smaller than 2 mm but larger communications require immediate attention and should be treated without delay, in order to avoid sinusitis and further complications leading to patient discomfort.
