Toxicity, bioavailability and metal speciation.

1. Environmental toxicology emphasizes the difference from traditional toxicology in which pure compounds of interest are added to purified diets, or injected into the test animals. When the objective is to study the fate and effects of trace elements in the environment, knowledge of the speciation of the elements and their physico-chemical forms is important. 2. Cadmium salts such as the sulfides, carbonates or oxides, are practically insoluble in water. However, these can be converted to water-soluble salts in nature under the influence of oxygen and acids. Chronic exposure to Cd is associat

Observations on removal of metal implants.

A total of 86 adult patients who underwent routine surgery to remove metal internal fixation devices were studied prospectively. At the time of surgery, 46 patients were symptomatic, but only 27 requested surgery; 59 were admitted for routine surgery on medical advice. There was no correlation between symptoms, the length of time the implant had been in situ or the location of the implant. Good results were achieved in 91 per cent of symptomatic patients and no problems occurred in 95 per cent of asymptomatic cases. Overall there was a 3 per cent complication rate including one refracture, one

Metal carcinogenesis: mechanistic implications.

Cancer epidemiology has identified several metal compounds as human carcinogens. Recent evidence suggests that carcinogenic metals induce genotoxicity in a multiplicity of ways, either alone or by enhancing the effects of other agents. This review summarizes current information on the genotoxicity of arsenic, chromium, nickel, beryllium and cadmium compounds and their possible roles in carcinogenesis. Each of these metals is distinct in its primary modes of action; yet there are several mechanisms induced by more than one metal, including: the induction of cellular immunity and oxidative stres…

Metal toxicity and the respiratory tract.

The type of lung disease caused by metal compounds depends on the nature of the offending agent, its physicochemical form, the dose, exposure conditions and host factors. The fumes or gaseous forms of several metals, e.g. cadmium (Cd), manganese (Mn), mercury (Hg), nickel carbonyl (Nl(CO)4, zinc chloride (ZnCl2), vanadium pentoxide (V2O5), may lead to acute chemical pneumonitis and pulmonary oedema or to acute tracheobronchitis. Metal fume fever, which may follow the inhalation of metal fumes e.g. zinc (Zn), copper (Cu) and many others, is a poorly understood influenza-like reaction, accompani…

Metal-binding ligands in Viokase.

The object of this study was to detect low molecular weight zinc binders in Viokase, a porcine pancreatic preparation used in the treatment of variant acrodermatitis enteropathica (AE). Extracts were centrifuged and ultrafiltered to yield a soluble fraction containing solutes of molecular weights less than or equal to 500 daltons. These were studied by modified gel chromatography (MGC) using sealed Sephadex G-15-120 columns equilibrated with buffered solvent systems containing either 5 ppm copper (II) or 5 ppm zinc (II). Eluted fractions were assayed for these metals by atomic absorption and f…

[Pyodermia in the metal working industry].

It has been possible to identify pyogenic organisms in the corrosion inhibiting oils of tubes, resulting in pyodermia. Degreasing media with heavy alkaline reaction may result in still further diseases of the skin. The problem can be solved by using tubes not protected against corrosion. A list has been compiled showing pathogenic agents which can be isolated from oils. Under certain conditions cutting oil may prove to be a pool of pathogenic agents.

Metallophilicity vs Metal-Halogen Bonds: The Dominant Driving Force in Self-Assembly of Metal Clusters.

Metallophilic interactions are prevalent in numerous metal clusters, where closed-shell metal centers exhibit mutual attraction even though they possess identical electrostatic properties. Generally, closed-shell metallophilicity with the combined effects of covalent bonding, Pauli repulsions, and van der Waals dispersion forces typically acts as an auxiliary interaction in stabilizing or constructing metal clusters. However, the combination between N-heterocyclic carbene-Au(I) and [CuI2]- is preponderantly driven by the closed-shell Cu(I)-Au(I) interactions rather than the Au-I bonds with a c

A Metal-COF-Based SERS Platform for PPb-Level Toluene Sensing With Tailored Metal Selectivity.

Ultrasensitive detection of nonpolar toxic VOCs like toluene remains a great challenge for environmental monitoring. This work presents a rationally designed SERS platform based on metallized covalent organic frameworks (M-COFs, M = Fe, Ni, Cu) obtained by a mild metal-modulation strategy that enables metal‑tunable COF crystallinity and porosity. M-COFs were one-pot synthesized from PyTA and PDA under 70 °C and atmospheric pressure. Spectroscopic characterizations confirm atomic dispersion of M2+ with four-coordinate M─N/O bonding in the frameworks. Particularly, Fe─COF exhibits superior cryst

What Drives Metal Artifacts in CBCT? A Comparative Study of Detector Types and Metallic Object Configurations.

BACKGROUND: One major limitation of cone beam computed tomography (CBCT) systems is the presence of metallic artifacts. Given the widespread use of metals in dental treatments and the diversity of CBCT designs, this study aimed to compare the effect of aligned and lateral offset detectors on metal artifact formation within the field of view (FOV). METHODS: This in vitro cross-sectional study evaluated four CBCT systems-two with aligned and two with lateral offset detectors. A dry human skull phantom was scanned with various metallic objects (a titanium implant, a tooth with a chrome-cobalt po…

Coordinative-Guest-Triggered Dimensional Crossover in a Metal-Organic Framework With Rigid Metal-Oxo Rods.

Structural phase transitions of metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) induced by guest-molecule exchange within their pores have attracted considerable attention not only from the viewpoint of structural chemistry but also for the modulation of their functional properties. Herein, we report a reversible structural phase transition triggered by the exchange of coordinative guest molecules in a Pb-based MOF composed of Pb2+ ions and 2,5-dihydroxy-1,4-benzoquinone (H2DHBQ), formulated as [Pb(DHBQ)(DMF)(H2O)] (DMF = N,N-dimethylformamide). This compound forms a 3D framework structure in which 1D Pb-O ro

Effect of mixing dissimilar metals on serum metal ion levels following spinal deformity surgery.

PURPOSE: The increased use of hybrid spinal implants combining dissimilar metals raises concerns for galvanic corrosion, which can affect metal ion release and implant longevity. This study examines the variation in post-fusion metal ion concentrations among different hybrid implant constructs. METHODS: In this prospective multicenter observational study, patients undergoing elective surgery for idiopathic or neuromuscular scoliosis received either cobalt-chromium (CoCr/Ti) or stainless steel (SS/Ti) rods with titanium screw implants. Blood metal ion concentrations were measured preoperativel…

Noble Metal/Iron-Group Metal Compound Composite Catalysts: Characterization, Synthesis, and Electrocatalytic Application.

Electrocatalysis is hindered by challenges such as the scarcity and high cost of noble metals, as well as the deactivation of active sites under reaction conditions. While iron-group metal compound (IGMC) offer abundant reserves and unique electronic structures, it often suffers- from high overpotentials and insufficient stability, limiting its practical applications. Noble metal/IGMC composite catalysts address these issues by enabling precise tuning of electronic structures through hybrid synthesis strategies, thereby enhancing catalytic activity and establishing efficient synergistic mechan…

Explant analysis of a chromium nitride coated metal-on-metal total wrist replacement: A case study.

Explant analysis can provide important understanding of how artificial joints perform in the human body. The articulating surfaces of the metacarpal head and the radius cup from a chromium nitride coated metal-on-metal Motec wrist implant were analysed. Due to bone resorption and aseptic loosening, the implant was removed after 6 years in the patient, and metallosis was observed during removal. Visually, some areas of the articulating surfaces appeared polished, others were dulled. A chemical composition analysis of the metacarpal head showed that the polished surfaces were chromium rich, impl

The Relationship between the Contouring Time of the Metal Artifacts Area and Metal Artifacts in Head and Neck Radiotherapy.

(1) Background: The impacts of metal artifacts (MAs) on the contouring workload for head and neck radiotherapy have not yet been clarified. Therefore, this study evaluated the relationship between the contouring time of the MAs area and MAs on head and neck radiotherapy treatment planning. (2) Methods: We used treatment planning computed tomography (CT) images for head and neck radiotherapy. MAs were classified into three severities by the percentage of CT images containing MAs: mild (<25%), moderate (25−75%), and severe (>75%). We randomly selected nine patients to evaluate the relationship b

Endogenous metal-ion dynamic nuclear polarization for NMR signal enhancement in metal organic frameworks.

Rational design of metal-organic framework (MOF)-based materials for catalysis, gas capture and storage, requires deep understanding of the host-guest interactions between the MOF and the adsorbed molecules. Solid-State NMR spectroscopy is an established tool for obtaining such structural information, however its low sensitivity limits its application. This limitation can be overcome with dynamic nuclear polarization (DNP) which is based on polarization transfer from unpaired electrons to the nuclei of interest and, as a result, enhancement of the NMR signal. Typically, DNP is achieved by impr
