Evaluation of iron ochre from mine drainage treatment for removal of phosphorus from wastewater.

Treatment of polluting discharges from abandoned coal mines in the UK currently produces ca 30,000 t y(-1) of hydrous iron oxides ("ochre"), for which there is no major end-use, but which has previously been shown to have potential for removing P from wastewater and agricultural runoff. The efficiency of ochre for P removal from wastewater was investigated in experiments at two sites in the UK: Leitholm in Scotland and Windlestone in England. The three-year experiment at Leitholm involved diverting secondary-treated wastewater effluent through a trough which contained granular and pelletized o

Spatiotemporal trends in fish mercury from a mine-dominated ecosystem: Clear Lake, California.

Clear Lake, California, USA, receives acid mine drainage and mercury (Hg) from the Sulphur Bank Mercury Mine, a U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (U.S. EPA) Superfund Site that was active intermittently from 1873 to 1957 and partially remediated in 1992. Mercury concentrations were analyzed primarily in four species of Clear Lake fishes: inland silversides (Menidia beryllina, planktivore), common carp (Cyprinus carpio, benthic scavenger/omnivore), channel catfish (Ictalurus punctatus, benthic omnivorous predator), and largemouth bass (Micropterus salmoides, piscivorous top predator). These

The effects of quarry mining on the epidemiology of Schistosoma haematobium in schoolchildren, in Ishiagu, south-eastern Nigeria.

Over the last two decades there has been a noticeable increase in the activities of quarry-mining companies in the Ishiagu area of south-eastern Nigeria. These activities have produced an ever-growing number of abandoned quarry pits that usually quickly fill with water and appear to become suitable habitats for the freshwater snails that may act as intermediate hosts of Schistosoma haematobium. To examine the potential role of quarry mining on the prevalence of urinary schistosomiasis caused by S. haematobium, urine samples were collected from 1819 schoolchildren in northern Ishiagu (an area w…

Metal concentrations and mycorrhizal status of plants colonizing copper mine tailings: potential for revegetation.

A field survey of metal concentrations and mycorrhizal status of plants growing on copper mine tailings was conducted in Anhui Province, China. Available phosphorus and organic matter in the tailings were very low. High concentrations of Pb, Zn, As and Cd as well as Cu were observed on some sites. The dominant plants growing on mine tailings belonged to the families Gramineae and Compositae, and the most widely distributed plant species were Imperata cylindrica, Cynodon dactylon and Paspalum distichum. Coreopsis drummondii also grew well on the arid sites but not on wet sites. Very low or zero

Rapid manganese removal from mine waters using an aerated packed-bed bioreactor.

In the UK, the Environmental Quality Standard for manganese has recently been lowered to 30 microg/L (annual average), which is less than the UK Drinking Water Inspectorate's Maximum Permitted Concentration Value (50 microg/L). Current passive treatment systems for manganese removal operate as open-air gravel-bed filters, designed to maximize either influent light and/or dissolved oxygen. This requires large areas of land. A novel enhanced bioremediation treatment system for manganese removal has been developed that consists of a passively aerated subsurface gravel bed. The provision of air at

Sediment microbial community composition and methylmercury pollution at four mercury mine-impacted sites.

Mercury pollution presents a globally significant threat to human and ecosystem health. An important transformation in the mercury cycle is the conversion of inorganic mercury to methylmercury, a toxic substance that negatively affects neurological function and bioaccumulates in food chains. This transformation is primarily bacterially mediated, and sulfate-reducing bacteria (SRB) have been specifically implicated as key mercury methylators in lake and estuarine sediments. This study used phospholipid fatty acid (PLFA) analysis to investigate sediment microbial community composition at four ab

[Non-occupational dust exposure of the population living in the vicinity of amphibolite mining and processing plant].

Amphibolite bed working in a strip mine, material processing, storage and waste disposal are associated with dust emission to the environment. The aim of our study was to assess non-occupational exposure to dust of people living in a village located about 200 m away from the mine. The fallout dust and the sediment obtained from water samples collected from the stream were found to contain tremolite. Respirable mineral fibers were detected in dust samples collected by filtration of the atmospheric air. Mean 24-h concentrations of the respirable dust at the place of measurements (school) varied

Effect of flue gas desulfurization (FGD) by-product on water quality at an underground coal mine.

In this paper, a field study was carried out to examine the effect of flue gas desulfurization (FGD) by-product on water quality at an underground coal mine in central-eastern Ohio. Flue gas desulfurizalion by-product was injected into the down-dip portions of the Robert-Dawson mine in an attempt to seal major seeps exiting the mine and to coat exposed pyritic surfaces. Immediately following grout injection, significant increases in acidity, iron, aluminum, sulfur, and calcium were observed at most surface and ground water locations near where grouting was carried out. Following this initial f

EFFECT OF DUST SUPPRESSION MEASURES ON THE PREVALENCE OF COAL-WORKERS' PNEUMOCONIOSIS IN THE DUTCH COAL-MINES.

The underground workers in the Dutch coal-mines have been radiographed (70 mm.) seven times since 1949. The prevalence of coal-miners' pneumoconiosis shows a continuous decrease in all age groups. To evaluate the effect of the intensive system of dust suppression over this period a cohort analysis was made of the proportion of men with pneumoconiosis with the same number of years of exposure underground but who started work in different years. The results show that the number of men with pneumoconiosis decreases the longer they have worked in the period since dust suppression measures were app

Evaluation of Ambient Air Particulate Matter, Urine Arsenic Levels and the Effect on Residents Health in an Artisanal Mining Community and an Incorporated Mining Community in Ghana From April 2024 to July 2024: A Cross-Sectional Study.

BACKGROUND AND AIM: Over 200 million people in developing and industrialized countries are exposed to arsenic poisoning. Fine particulate matter (PM2.5) constitutes a significant air contaminant, especially in urban and industrial suburbs. A significant proportion of countries do not possess sufficient ambient air quality guidelines for particulate matter pollution, which has the potential for toxicity, including renal toxicity. The health risk of pollution to inhabitants of a mining area is of much concern. The Ghanaian mining sector plays a significant role in the economy, being the largest …

Feasibility of self-sustaining smoldering for the preparation of constructed technosols from acidic mine tailings.

Self-sustaining smoldering has been widely investigated for treating organic solid waste, whereas its potential to transform acidic mine tailings into constructed Technosols (CTs) for rehabilitation remains unclear. Here, self-sustaining smoldering was evaluated as a method for preparing CTs from acidic mine tailings, with a focus on smoldering behavior, acid-generation potential, arsenic (As) risk, physicochemical properties, dissolved organic matter (DOM) characteristics, revegetation potential, and mineralogical transformation. At tailings/wheat straw ratios of 3:1-6:1 and airflow rates of

Mortality in relation to smoke exposure 9 years after the Hazelwood coal mine fire.

BACKGROUND: In 2014, a coal mine fire in rural Australia shrouded nearby towns in smoke for several weeks. In response to community concerns and a lack of available evidence, the Victorian Department of Health commissioned a long-term health study. This article evaluates smoke effects on mortality 9 years after the fire. METHODS: In 2016-17, 2872 individuals living near the mine during the fire were recruited into a cohort study and consented to linkage of their data. Time-location diaries were blended with estimates of hourly fire-related fine particulate matter ≤2.5 µm (PM2.5) to generate i
