Comparative case study on the implementation of the multi- space concept in a healthcare facility: study protocol.

BACKGROUND: Modern healthcare organizations face increasing psychosocial and organizational demands driven by digitalization, flexible work models, and rising workload. In large university hospitals such as the Medical Center - University of Freiburg, administrative and clinical staff work in highly complex, interdisciplinary environments where well-being, performance, and patient care are closely linked. The physical office environment plays a crucial role in shaping employees' well-being, motivation, and health. To meet the high cooperative demands in medical centers, multi-space offices are

Increasing implicit rationing of care in nursing homes: A time-series cross-sectional analysis.

BACKGROUND: Implicit rationing of nursing care is a socio-ecological problem where care workers, due to lack of resources, have to leave necessary nursing care activities undone. Cross-sectional studies on implicit rationing of nursing home care revealed associations with organizational and work environment characteristics. However, little is known on how implicit rationing of nursing care varies over time in nursing homes. OBJECTIVE: This study's purpose was to describe changes in levels and patterns of implicit rationing of nursing care in Swiss nursing homes over time, while accounting for

Integrating HCV services for drug users: a model to improve engagement and outcomes.

Although the majority of prevalent and incident cases of hepatitis C are related to injection drug use, drug users often find it difficult to access treatment services because of concerns about adherence and treatment candidacy. In response to the growing epidemic, OASIS, a nonprofit community clinic, developed a successful peer-based HCV group that allowed us to engage, educate, test, and treat hepatitis C in large numbers of drug users, the majority of whom have multiple potential barriers to intervention. Integrating services for hepatitis C, addiction, mental health, and psychosocial probl

Development of an intestinal mucosa ex vivo co-culture model to study viral infections.

Studying viral infections necessitates well-designed cell culture models to deepen our understanding of diseases and develop effective treatments. In this study, we present a readily available ex vivo 3D co-culture model replicating the human intestinal mucosa. The model combines fully differentiated human intestinal epithelium (HIE) with human monocyte-derived macrophages (hMDMs) and faithfully mirrors the in vivo structural and organizational properties of intestinal mucosal tissues. Specifically, it mimics the lamina propria, basement membrane, and the air-exposed epithelial layer, enabling

Causal mechanisms of individual differences in hemispheric lateralization of the face perception network: A DCM-PEB approach.

Functional lateralization is a fundamental organizational principle of the human brain, yet the neural mechanisms underlying inter-individual variability in hemispheric dominance remain poorly understood. In this study, we investigated the causal network dynamics contributing to hemispheric lateralization within the face perception system, focusing on the fusiform face area (FFA) and occipital face area (OFA). Using Dynamic Causal Modelling (DCM) combined with Parametric Empirical Bayes (PEB) in a large sample of 110 participants, we examined how individual differences in lateralization indice

Male Service Members' Experiences of Sexual Assault Prevention Trainings in the U.S. Military.

Sexual violence in the military remains a pervasive public health and organizational concern. Although the U.S. military has implemented prevention policies and trainings, few evaluations have examined their cultural relevance or effectiveness. This exploratory study used a theory-informed qualitative design, guided by the Kirkpatrick model, to explore how military culture shapes the design, reception, and impact of sexual assault prevention trainings. Seventeen male current and former service members from four military branches participated in semi-structured interviews analyzing their percep

Implementing a professional youth mentoring program during times of crisis: lessons from the global pandemic.

The COVID-19 pandemic disrupted traditional youth mentoring practices as social distancing limited in-person interactions. This study analyzes how Friends of the Children (FOTC), a professional mentoring program, was able to maintain engagement with mentees during the pandemic. Using a sample of 112 youth (58% Black/African American) with an average age of 12.5, this study investigated how FOTC continued to support mentees during this period. The amount of time and types of activities mentors engaged in with youth before, during, and after the pandemic were assessed to gauge how service delive

Automated phenotyping of postoperative delirium-like behaviour in mice reveals the therapeutic efficacy of dexmedetomidine.

Postoperative delirium (POD) is a complicated and harmful clinical syndrome. Traditional behaviour analysis mostly focuses on static parameters. However, animal behaviour is a bottom-up and hierarchical organizational structure composed of time-varying posture dynamics. Spontaneous and task-driven behaviours are used to conduct comprehensive profiling of behavioural data of various aspects of model animals. A machine-learning based method is used to assess the effect of dexmedetomidine. Fourteen statistically different spontaneous behaviours are used to distinguish the non-POD group from the P

Organizational culture and affective commitment to e-learning' changes during COVID-19 pandemic: The underlying effects of readiness for change.

Higher education institutions (HEIs) have been embracing digital transformation for years, but the disruptive influence of the global COVID-19 pandemic has accelerated it. Despite the importance of organizational culture (OC) for the successful delivery of e-learning, empirical studies looking at its impact on academics' readiness and affective commitment to e-learning-induced changes are scant. This study unveils the underlying impacts of multiple employee readiness for change (ERFC) dimensions in the OC-employee affective commitment to change (EACC) relationship. Survey data were obtained fr

A Critical Ethnography of Outreach Nursing for People Experiencing Homelessness.

People experiencing homelessness have a high prevalence of substance abuse and mental and physical problems. Although they have very complex health needs, they face many barriers that reduce their access to health care and social services. Several research studies have shown the need to implement adapted nursing interventions to address these crucial access issues. In this article, we present the results of a critical ethnography of outreach nurses who work with homeless people (n = 12). Robert Castel's theoretical model, which focuses on the process of social disaffiliation, provided the conc

Risk factors for carpal tunnel syndrome related to the work organization: a prospective surveillance study in a large working population.

The study aimed to determine the risk factors for incident carpal tunnel syndrome (CTS) in a large working population, with a special focus on factors related to work organization. In 2002-2005, 3710 workers were assessed and, in 2007-2010, 1611 were re-examined. At baseline all completed a self-administered questionnaire about personal/medical factors and work exposure. CTS symptoms and physical examination signs were assessed by a standardized medical examination at baseline and follow-up. The risk of "symptomatic CTS" was higher for women (OR = 2.9 [1.7-5.2]) and increased linearly with age

Systems approach to address incivility and disruptive behaviors in health-care organizations.

In response to the growing evidence that disruptive behaviors within health-care teams constitute a major threat to the quality of care, the Joint Commission on Accreditation of Healthcare Organization (JCAHO; Joint Commission Resources, 2008) has a new leadership standard that addresses disruptive and inappropriate behaviors effective January 1, 2009. For professionals who work in human resources and organization development, these standards represent a clarion call to design and implement evidence-based interventions to create health-care communities of respectful engagement that have zero t

Principal identifying features of the syndrome of nonverbal learning disabilities in children.

The identifying features of the syndrome of nonverbal learning disabilities (NLD) were examined with a view to determining their relative discriminant validity. A stepwise linear discriminant function analysis of children with NLD (n = 29), children with reading and spelling disabilities (Group R-S; n = 27), and a group of nonclinical children (NC; n = 27) on 15 neuropsychological variables yielded a subset of scores on four tests (Target Test; Trail Making Test, Part B; Tactual Performance Test; and Grooved Pegboard Test) that accurately (> 95%) discriminated the NLD group from the R-S and NC
