Wireless inertial measurement unit-based methods for measuring lumbopelvic-hip range of motion are valid compared with optical motion capture as golden standard.

BACKGROUND: Lumbopelvic-hip motions in the sagittal plane are critical in distinguishing between individuals with Low Back Pain (LBP) and healthy counterparts. Assessment of these motions involves evaluation of the range of motion, timing, coordination, alignment, and functional performance. Traditional, golden standard devices, like optical motion capture systems, are costly and limited to lab settings. Alternatively, Inertial Measurement Units (IMUs) potentially offer an affordable solution that allows movement assessment in daily life. METHODS: This cross-sectional study compares two IMU-b…

Trunk Range of Motion and Patient Outcomes After Anterior Vertebral Body Tethering Versus Posterior Spinal Fusion: Comparison Using Computerized 3D Motion Capture Technology.

BACKGROUND: Anterior vertebral body tethering (AVBT) for adolescent idiopathic scoliosis (AIS) is postulated to preserve motion compared with traditional posterior spinal fusion (PSF), but few studies exist to date. We used a validated computerized 3D model to compare trunk motion between patients treated with PSF and AVBT, and analyzed trunk motion in relation to the lowest instrumented vertebra (LIV). METHODS: This was a single-center retrospective review of a consecutive series of skeletally immature patients with AIS who underwent motion analysis prior to PSF (n = 47) or AVBT (n = 65) and…

Development of computer-directed methods for the identification of hyperactivated motion using motion patterns developed by rabbit sperm during incubation under capacitation conditions.

Rabbit spermatozoa developed motions that mimicked hyperactivated motility during incubation for 16-20 hours under capacitation conditions and in several other commonly used media. Sperm from some rabbits failed to acquire this type of motility, and sperm from others failed to survive the long incubation time. Four motility patterns developed during incubation for 16-20 hours. Motility parameters measured by the CellSoft and CellTrak motion analysis systems were similar except for the average amplitude of lateral head displacement. Multivariate discriminant analysis with complementary regressi…

Segmental dynamics and local motions in disordered random copolymers.

Understanding the glass transition in amorphous polymers and the underlying principles that govern segmental motions remains a key challenge in polymer physics. Here, we investigated random copolymers composed of methyl methacrylate (MMA) and 4-tert-butylstyrene (TBS) monomers across various compositions to elucidate the influence of monomer bulkiness on the glass transition temperature (T g), fragility (m), and segmental dynamics. The calorimetric T g values were observed to strongly deviate from the Fox equation, showcasing a structure-independent behavior at high to medium MMA concentration…

Exact and Approximate Constants of Motion in Stochastic Contact Processes.

We study a variety of stochastic contact processes-directly related to models of rumor and disease spreading-from the viewpoint of their constants of motion, either exact or approximated. As in deterministic systems, constants of motion in stochastic dynamics make it possible to reduce the number of relevant variables, thereby confining the set of accessible states and facilitating analytical treatment. For processes of rumor propagation based on the Maki-Thompson model, we show how to construct exact constants of motion as linear combinations of conserved quantities in each elementary contact…

The effect of flexor tendon adhesions on finger range of motion.

BACKGROUND: Bony and soft tissue hand injuries are common and their ensuing management can result in adhesions between tendons and the surrounding bone, soft tissues or inserted hardware. Knowledge of the patterns of motion restriction imparted by different adhesions has implications for rehabilitation protocols following injury or surgery. The aim of this study was to quantify the degree and pattern of digital motion loss due to adhesions at various levels of the flexor apparatus in a cadaveric model. METHODS: Ten cadaveric limbs underwent range of motion assessment of the digits in a standa…

Motion Analysis of Ear Surgery Training on an Ovine Model.

INTRODUCTION: Motion analysis is crucial for surgical training, especially in intricate procedures like ear surgery. Hand movements during myringotomy and stapedectomy training on a sheep's head model were evaluated in this study using accelerometer-based sensors. The aim is to identify specific motion characteristics-including tremor and speed consistency-that distinguish surgical expertise levels and quantify the efficiency gap between trainees and experts. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Participants (n=24) were divided into three groups: residents (n=10), specialists (n=10), and senior surgeons (n…

Feasibility and Acceptability of Restroom Motion Sensors for Detecting Overdoses.

BACKGROUND: Most US drug use events that lead to a fatal overdose are unwitnessed. Given the scale of the overdose crisis, interventions to help detect and respond to overdoses in community settings are urgently needed. Overdose detection technologies (ODT), including reverse-motion restroom sensors, are a promising set of interventions that are underutilized. This study explored the perspectives of frontline harm reduction workers, clinicians, housing shelter staff, and their clients on restroom sensors. METHODS: Staff and program client focus groups conducted between December 2022 and Janua…

A dynamic scale-mixture model of motion in natural scenes.

Some of the most important tasks of visual and motor systems involve estimating the motion of objects and tracking them over time. Such systems evolved to meet the behavioral needs of the organism in its natural environment and may therefore be adapted to the statistics of motion it is likely to encounter. By tracking the movement of individual points in movies of natural scenes, we begin to identify common properties of natural motion across scenes. As expected, objects in natural scenes move in a persistent fashion, with velocity correlations lasting hundreds of milliseconds. More subtly, bu…

Continuous Estimation of Swallowing Motion With EMG and MMG Signals.

Oropharyngeal dysphagia (OD) is a symptom of swallowing dysfunction that is associated with aspiration, severe respiratory complications, an … ods, i.e., Gaussian process regression (GPR), LSTM, and random forest (RF), are used for swallowing motion estimation based on EMG/MMG signals measured from six healthy subjects and a patient with PD, respectively. Moreover, a depth camera-based approach is proposed to provide the reference laryngeal displacement (i.e., the swallowing movement). The expe …

Influence of seating orientation on motion sickness in autonomous vehicles.

A major advantage of autonomous vehicles (AVs) is the passengers' ability to perform non-driving related tasks (NDRTs) while being driven. Among these NDRTs, social interaction with other passengers is considered to be particularly valuable. Seating layouts featuring rotatable front seats will enable a new level of social interaction during autonomous car journeys. However, being seated against the direction of travel is not very popular. Fear of motion sickness is one of the main reasons for this reluctance, which is commonly explained by the inability to see the road ahead. This raises the q…

Warfare injuries to the wrist. Fusions and motion-preserving procedures.

This retrospective study reports the outcome of secondary reconstruction after severe combat-related injuries to the wrist. Fifteen patients with a median age of 36 years were included. Nine patients underwent total wrist arthrodesis and six had a motion-preserving procedure. In patients with wrist injuries involving the distal radius, concomitant bone defects of the ulna, lunate and scaphoid are often present, making wrist motion-preserving surgical procedures challenging. Total wrist arthrodesis required iliac crest bone grafting in all but one case. The final median QuickDASH score for the …

Spontaneous Recycling of Electrosprayed Sample by Retrograde Motion of Microdroplets.

Here, we discuss an interesting phenomenon occurring spontaneously near the sample liquid meniscus at the tip of the electrospray emitter. While most ejected droplets move from the emitter tip toward the counter electrode, some of the droplets decelerate and move backward to the liquid meniscus. When they hit the surface of the liquid meniscus, they either merge with the bulk liquid or get recharged during intermittent contact with the liquid meniscus and immediately reaccelerate toward the counter electrode. In some cases, while in contact with the meniscus they spontaneously form a secondary
