Sarcoidosis is a multiorgan inflammatory disease that rarely involves the musculoskeletal system. A typical radiographic presentation is only noted with phalangeal lesions in the hands and feet, and other skeletal sites of sarcoidosis are a diagnostic imaging challenge [1]. We describe two cases of patients with sarcoidosis in whom pathologic bone marrow lesions were diagnosed on MRI scans. The magnetic resonance findings were non-specific and metastatic lesions or multiple myeloma were suspected. The case analysis serves to point to limitations of imaging studies in diagnosing bone sarcoidosi

Fibromyalgia syndrome (FMS) is a chronic, idiopathic condition of widespread musculoskeletal pain, affecting primarily women. It is clinically characterized by chronic, nonarticular pain and a heightened response to pressure along with sleep disturbances, fatigue, bowel and bladder abnormalities, and cognitive dysfunction. The diagnostic criteria have changed repeatedly, and there is neither a definitive pathogenesis nor reliable diagnostic or prognostic biomarkers. Clinical and laboratory studies have provided evidence of altered central pain pathways. Recent evidence suggests the involvement

Osteoarticular involvement is the most frequently observed complication of brucellosis. Brucellosis tenosynovitis of the extensor tendon sheath is an extremely rare manifestation of musculoskeletal brucellosis. A 36-year-old male patient presented with described pain in his right wrist that had started six days earlier. There was also a diffuse swelling in the first finger of his right hand. The patient described fever, night sweats, widespread muscle pain and fatigue that had been going on for the last six days. Standard tube agglutination for Brucella was positive at a titre of 1/320. Familial arthropathy associated with congenital camptodactyly has been previously recognized as a definite clinical entity in the literature. The clinical spectrum of this disease seems to be variable. The typical features of congenital camptodactyly, arthropathy, coxa vara and pericarditis (CACP syndrome) appear to be a more frequent presentation in children from the Middle East and North Africa. Musculoskeletal presentation of this rare familial form of arthropathy is unique and heterogeneous. In all previous reports, non-inflammatory pattern of arthropathy involving the peripheral joints wi

From examination of 69 pelvic CT scans from 25 patients, the role of CT after hemipelvectomy is examined. A brief description of the various types of hemipelvectomy, including simple, extended, compound, and modified, is presented. The new variants of internal and modified internal hemipelvectomy are also included. The normal post-surgical changes in the musculoskeletal structures and pelvic viscera are described and illustrated. Postoperative abnormalities detected included hematoma, inflammatory changes, incisional hernia, ureteral obstruction, adenopathy, and local recurrence. An example of

BACKGROUND: Violin playing involves prolonged upper limb exertion and asymmetrical posture, potentially leading to pain and postural defects. Despite the known prevalence of playing-related musculoskeletal disorders, data on young adult violinists compared to a control group remains insufficient. The aim of this study was to assess pain and postural problems among young adult violin players, and to compare them with those of non-violin players. Additionally, an attempt was made to identify the causes of these problems in violinists and to indicate directions that should be developed in further

Background Despite being promising, the use of ultrasound (US) in the assessment of musculoskeletal manifestations of systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) is still limited. Literature on this topic is scarce and the spectrum and clinical relevance of US abnormalities has not yet been outlined. With this paper, we aim to explore the panel of joint and tendon US findings in a group of SLE patients. Methods Twenty-five consecutive SLE patients, with current or medical history of musculoskeletal symptoms, were studied. All patients underwent routine clinical examination and US evaluation. The US exa

OBJECTIVES: Shoulder pain secondary to various aetiologies is a common musculoskeletal complaint worldwide, and Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) is the most accurate imaging method for evaluating shoulder pain in all age groups. While the patterns of shoulder MRI abnormalities in various demographics have been reported, data on sub-Sahara African populations are still sparse. This study aims to describe the imaging features and spectrum of shoulder joint pathologies on MRI in adult Nigerians.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: This was a retrospective review of the shoulder MRI of 100 adult Nigerians (wi

Wiedemann-Steiner syndrome is a rare genetic disorder characterized by short stature, hairy elbows, facial dysmorphism, and developmental delay. It can also be accompanied by musculoskeletal anomalies such as muscular hypotonia and small hands and feet. Mutations in the KMT2A gene have only recently been identified as the cause of Wiedemann-Steiner syndrome; therefore, only 16 patients from 15 families have been described, and new phenotypic features continue to be added. In this report, we describe 2 newly identified patients with Wiedemann-Steiner syndrome who presented with variable severit

In recent years the study of fibroblast growth factor receptors (FGFRs) in normal development and human genetic disorders has increased our understanding of some complex cellular processes. At least fifteen genetic disorders result from mutations within FGFR genes including skeletal dysplasias such as Apert syndrome and achondroplasia. In vitro experiments and the generation of animal models indicate that these mutations result in activation of the receptors and that FGFRs act as negative regulators of bone growth. FGFRs also play a role in wound healing and cancer. In this article, we review

OBJECTIVES: Patients presenting with musculoskeletal symptoms are fairly common in any neurologist practice, their presentation raises concern of underlying radiculopathy as a cause of their symptoms. The role of electrodiagnostic study has been variable in such patients. Creating a diagnostic tool will be of most help to provide physicians of predictive value of such tests before ordering and help guide them in finding the most appropriate test.
METHODS: Retrospective chart review study of 444 patients older than 18 years. The patients were referred to the electrodiagnostic laboratory with m

Musculoskeletal ultrasound (MSUS) is an important measurement tool in pediatric rheumatology as it detects subclinical disease activity and enables clinicians to treat patients during "the window of opportunity". However, the role of MSUS in assessing remission in JIA patients is not well-defined. This systematic review aimed to provide the most up-to-date published literature regarding the added value of MSUS in JIA patients in remission. This systematic review followed the preferred reporting items for systematic reviews guidelines. Original articles from PubMed and Scopus, published until F

Sengers Syndrome is an autosomal recessive mitochondrial myopathy caused by mutations of the acylglycerol kinase gene, which leads to an abnormal musculoskeletal and myocardial lipid and glycogen accumulation. It is characterized by congenital cataracts, hypertrophic cardiomyopathy, skeletal myopathy and lactic acidosis (especially under stress condition). Therefore, cataract surgery might be indicated. Currently there is no treatment or management formalised for this disease, meaning it is a challenge in clinical practice. We introduce a case of perioperative anaesthetic management on a patie

Mastocytosis is a disorder of abnormal mast cell proliferation, with clinical features that include flushing, pruritus, abdominal pain, diarrhea, hypotension, syncope, and musculoskeletal pain. These features are the result of mast cell mediator release and infiltration into target organs. Patients of all ages may be affected, although in children, manifestations primarily involve the skin. Most patients with systemic disease have a somatically acquired activating mutation in the KIT oncogene. This article discusses the causes and pathogenesis of mastocytosis, with an overview of the clinical

Snapping phenomena result from the sudden impingement between anatomical and/or heterotopical structures with subsequent abrupt movement and noise. Snaps are variously perceived by patients, from mild discomfort to significant pain requiring surgical management. Identifying the precise cause of snaps may be challenging when no abnormality is encountered on routinely performed static examinations. In this regard, dynamic imaging techniques have been developed over time, with various degrees of success. This review encompasses the main features of each imaging technique and proposes an overview

Tardive dyskinesia (TD) is an umbrella term typically used to describe a movement disorder associated with the use of neuroleptic (anti-psychotic) medication. It is characterized by abnormal, repetitive and involuntary movements. The movements may be around the mouth and face (orofacial dyskinesia) and less frequently, in the trunk and limbs (trunk and limb dyskinesia). TD occurs in over 20% of those using neuroleptic medication continually for longer than three months. A case report is presented of a patient affected by TD who suffered mechanical musculoskeletal pain secondary to its effects,

We report four cases with syndrome of asymmetric crying facies, analyzing particularly the etiology, embryology, and incidence of the congenital hypoplasia of depressor anguli oris muscle. In one of the cases, with multiple malformations, the patient had an abnormal karyotype, 47,XX, +i(18p). We stress the high incidence of associations with congenital malformations (eight fold the general population) and more specifically with congenital heart disease, musculoskeletal, and genito-urinary defects. The diagnosis of MDAO agenesis is basically clinic, being as differential diagnosis the paralysis

Background: VACTERL association is a widely known congenital malformation that includes vertebral, anal, cardiac, tracheoesophageal, renal, and limb anomalies. Patients with VACTERL and hydrocephalus appear to form a distinct group, both genetically and phenotypically, and their condition has been called VACTERL-H syndrome. Most cases of VACTERL-H have been reported postnatally, as VACTER-H syndrome is difficult to diagnose prenatally. Case Presentation: Here, we report a case of VACTERL-H syndrome in a dichorionic and diamniotic twin diagnosed prenatally by ultrasonography and confirmed postn

An analysis was made of over 30 demographic, biologic and medical variables in relation to risks of congenital malformations which occurred in the Collaborative Perinatal Project. The study population consisted of 46,689 single and multiple live births and fetal deaths about whom complete information was available on all study variables. Included in the analysis were 5 general malformation categories, 27 specific major, and 7 specific minor malformations. Several new associations were detected between epidemiologic factors and risks of specific malformations while other previously reported ass
