"The more I think about it, the less I like it": Effects of elaboration, narrative transportation, and freedom threat on the effectiveness of HPV vaccination advocacy messages.

Approximately 80 million US adults-one in four-are infected with the human papillomavirus (HPV), which causes cancers of the cervix in women, cancers of the anus, penis, and throat in men, and genital warts in both sexes. Although HPV vaccinations are safe, effective, easily affordable, and readily available, a substantial percentage of parents resist recommendations to vaccinate their children against HPV. The current study tests the effects of different vaccination advocacy message strategies on attitudes toward HPV vaccination. Study participants (N = 963) were randomly assigned to one of f

The present study explored the individual patients' perspectives on TB treatment. METHODS: The present ethnographic study was undertaken among the admitted tuberculosis patients of both sexes in the 18-70 age group in a referral government TB hospital in Odisha. Thirty selected in-depth interviews and case studies were taken

Talking about borderline personality disorder, shaping care: The multiple doings of narratives.

This article focuses on the narratives that circulate about borderline personality disorder (BPD) in health-care settings in Australia and the effects such narratives can have on how people practice and seek out care. People with a BPD diagnosis frequently access health-care services, often encountering stigma and discrimination. Drawing on narrative theory, we critically unpack the circulation and capacities of BPD narratives and the ways they can often contribute to poor and troubling experiences. This article is based on qualitative interviews with people living with a BPD diagnosis, as wel

"It's On Your Shoulders Now" Transitioning from Child-to-Adult UK Cleft Lip/Palate Services: An Exploration of Young Adults' Narratives.

ObjectivesTreatment for cleft lip and/or palate (CL/P) in the United Kingdom is administered on a standardised pathway from diagnosis to early adulthood, with options to be re-referred in later life. At age 16, patients become responsible for their treatment decisions. Evidence from the wider health literature indicates this transition can be challenging and that this population may require additional support. The present study explored young people's experiences of transition to adult care in the context of CL/P services, with the aim of identifying support needs and informing future service

Information needs and experiences from pregnancies complicated by hypertensive disorders: a qualitative analysis of narrative responses.

BACKGROUND: Incorporation of the patient voice is urgently needed in a broad array of health care settings, but it is particularly lacking in the obstetrical literature. Systematically derived information about patients' experience with hypertensive disorders of pregnancy (HDP), most notably preeclampsia, is necessary to improve patient-provider communication and ultimately inform patient-centered care and research. We sought to examine the information needs and experiences of individuals with pregnancies complicated by hypertensive disorders. METHODS: We conducted a qualitative content analy

"In the flesh": Narratives of family caregivers at risk of Early-onset Familial Alzheimer's Disease.

In the growing body of literature dealing with the consequences of family caregiving amongst people with dementia, there are few studies examining the impact of Early-onset Familial Alzheimer's Disease on caregivers. This study exposes the subjective experience of a group of family caregivers who themselves possess a genetic susceptibility to develop this form of dementia. We interviewed and analyzed the accounts of 27 caregivers belonging to family lineages carrying the E280A mutation for Early-onset Alzheimer's Disease. We utilized a phenomenological method to analyze these accounts, initial

Written cohesion in children with and without language learning disabilities.

BACKGROUND: Cohesion refers to the linguistic elements of discourse that contribute to its continuity and is an important element to consider as part of written language intervention, especially in children with language learning disabilities (LLD). There is substantial evidence that children with LLD perform more poorly than typically developing (TD) peers on measures of cohesion in spoken language and on written transcription measures; however, there is far less research comparing groups on cohesion as a measure of written language across genres. AIMS: The current study addresses this gap t

Illness narratives of people who are homeless.

Multiple illnesses are common in all homeless populations. While most previous studies have focused on experiences of mental illness, there is a scarcity of studies about experiences of bodily illness among people who are homeless. This study aimed to explore illness narratives of people who are homeless, and how homelessness as a social context shapes the experience of multiple and/or advancing somatic conditions. The design was a qualitative single-case study, using interpretive description. Data were generated through interviews, with nine participants who were homeless rough sleepers in St

Transgressive women don't deserve protection: young men's narratives of sexual violence against women in rural Papua New Guinea.

Sexual violence against women and girls is commonplace in Papua New Guinea (PNG). While the experiences of women are rightly given central place in institutional responses to sexual violence, the men who perpetrate violence are often overlooked, an oversight that undermines the effectiveness of prevention efforts. This paper draws on interviews conducted with young men as part of a qualitative longitudinal study of masculinity and male sexuality in a rural highland area of PNG. It explores one aspect of male sexuality: men's narratives of sexual violence. Most striking from the data is that th

Communicative empowerment of people with intellectual disability.

BACKGROUND: Personal narratives are conditional for victims of sexual abuse to overcome their trauma. Counsellors can help victims with intellectual disability to take an active position in conversations about sexuality and to co-construct a personal narrative. METHOD: Using discourse and conversational analysis, we studied 4 conversations between a counsellor and a woman with autism and mild intellectual disability. RESULTS: In conversation with a counsellor the participant was able to express her inner emotions and understanding about sexual issues and other sensitive topics. She was able

'I just want to be normal': An analysis of discourses of normality among recovering heroin users.

Research that has explored the lives of men and women recovering from heroin addiction has reported that users often claim that they 'just want to be normal'. Working within a Foucauldian tradition, we argue in this article that the notions of 'governmentality' and the 'norm' are especially apposite to understanding the ubiquity of this aspiration. Here we focus not on the formal institutions of governance that encourage individuals to adhere to social, cultural and political norms, but rather seek to explore recovering users' accounts of normality as they are envisaged and expressed. The repo

Story-like organization of REM-dreams in patients with narcolepsy-cataplexy.

Narcolepsy with cataplexy (NC) is a neurological disorder characterized by excessive daytime sleepiness and an altered architecture of sleep. Previous laboratory studies have shown that frightening, bizarre and visually vivid contents are more frequent in dream experiences developed during the first period of REM sleep by NC patients than healthy subjects. As the structural organization of dream experiences of NC patients has not been yet examined, we compared its indicators in dream reports collected from a sample of NC patients and their matched controls. During an experimental night two awa

Acute stress impairs visual narrative comprehension in younger but not older adults.

Visual narrative comprehension is essential for navigating modern society, where information, rules, and news are frequently communicated through images, diagrams, and visual stories. Encoding a coherent narrative from disparate elements is critical for all age groups. Although recent studies report a significant rise in stress and anxiety levels, driven by factors such as the COVID-19 pandemic and recent geopolitical conflicts, the impact of stress on visual narrative comprehension remains largely underexplored. This study explored how acute stress affects narrative comprehension in younger (

Animated media content and the Papageno effect: Experimental evidence for the suicide-preventive potential of coping-oriented narratives in the series BoJack Horseman.

Suicide-related media portrayals can exert both harmful and protective effects on suicide-related outcomes, with the Papageno effect describing suicide-preventive influences of coping-oriented portrayals. Adult animated series have largely been absent from research, despite animation's popularity and its distinctive capacity to externalize psychological states, rendering experiences of mental health crises and recovery particularly accessible to viewers. Using an experimental design (N = 146) with pre- and post-measures of suicidal thoughts, participants watched a brief video clip from the Net

Functional connectivity of semantic and default mode networks during narrative comprehension.

Understanding narratives requires at least transient access to the semantic system, to decode incoming content, and prolonged access to the default mode network to maintain and manipulate the narrative model. Subregions within the integrative semantic hubs in bilateral anterior temporal lobe appear differentially sensitive to the need to rapidly decode external input (exogenous processing) versus reflecting on context stored in the narrative model (endogenous processing). The latter is most consistently reported in the middle temporal gyrus portion of the hub, suggesting that this region serve
